Falcons sign S Chris Cooper

This was a great signing. We absolutely needed veteran insurance behind our two recovering safeties.

He hasn't played in the NFL.

Cooper, 25, is a Stony Brook product who overcame a lot just to make it to the NFL as an undrafted free agent. He’s spent time in Kansas City and Indianapolis but has yet to play in an NFL game. Cooper put up four interceptions in college and has solid size at 5’11” and 200 pounds, but I couldn’t tell you much about his game beyond that. We’ll get to learn a lot more when Dan Quinn comments on the signing and we see him practice this summer.

The Falcons clearly think enough of him to give him a two year contract, which is reason enough to believe they see him pushing hard for a roster spot over the summer. Right now, Atlanta is acting as though they don’t have an established backup at either safety spot, and Cooper would (based on his collegiate career and where he worked with Indy and KC) slot in at free safety.

The team seems intent on retaining flexibility in the draft, and the Cooper and Laguda (one year) signings are evidence of that. If all goes well, the Falcons will be able to have both compete with later round draft selection(s) and come away with a pair of strong backups, though it’s worth noting that Sharrod Neasman is still hanging around and should have a spot as well. Iron sharpens iron and all that.

Welcome to Atlanta, Chris Cooper!

I wonder if they are going to sign Laguda too.. he played decent at Colorado.

Edit: just saw we did sign Laguda! Depth everywhere on the back end!

A year ago, the Atlanta Falcons spent quite a bit of time with Colorado safety Afolabi Laguda.

It seemed as thought the team might be interested in him with a late round pick, though that didn’t quite happen.

An Atlanta native and teammate of eventual second-round pick Isaiah Oliver, Laguda wound up with the Rams before being waived off injured reserve.

Now he’s back home with the Falcons.

n Atlanta, he’ll compete for a backup spot at safety and in the special teams core. He’ll have had a year out of football to rest his body by this time, and will be a guy the team has done research on and will have a familiarity with that they often don’t with free agents.

He’s also, surprisingly, only the second defensive free agent the team has brought in this cycle outside of former Falcons DE Adrian Clayborn. You wonder if they’ll add more talent on that side of the ball after the draft, but at least for now, it’s great to see another face added to the group.

The team is working out former AAF safety Ed Reynolds Friday, too, so we’ll see if they continue to add competition to the safety group.

We’re glad to finally welcome Laguda to the Falcons, and we’ll see how he contributes to the secondary and to the special teams unit.

You are salty today my friend.  Hope all is well with you and yours.

My personal life is fantastic. I’m really not wanting to sit through another atrocious defense. Defense and the run game are my favorite part. I want to feel entertained, I leave many of these games deeply annoyed with both the talent and plays called for them. Especially the use. If Kazee is playing NB instead of Free Safety, for me it’s already downhill.

I'm with you on this KOG. Don't understand why we are taking our best ballhawk and moving him from a position in which he led the league in ints...

Just keep an open mind about these safeties.  Both of these dudes missed their initial teams due to circumstance.  Laguda was well on his way to making a lauded Rams D b4 getting hurt.  His tape looks much better than Richards ever did. That ******* never wrapped up on any of his tackles in the film I watched.

Cooper seems to have a similar body type to Poole's.  In the 5' 10" area but still over 200 with the quicks.  Give them a chance bro.

With the level of talent on both sides of the ball this past 5 or so seasons...I think as Falcons fans, we all are KoG, we all are. <_< #Chippie2AtlantieB4IDie-E
