My targets for each round

13 posts in this topic

I try to do this every year (see 2016 & 2017). Below is my shortlist of targets for each round - guys who in my mind address needs, represent value and are scheme fits. Some call it a 'short' or 'small' board. Bill Belichick is famous for having a list of 20-30 targets every year and so it's not a stretch to imagine TD & Pioli using something similar.

Obviously not all of these guys will be available where I have them slated to go and in some rounds we may have to get creative to get some of these guys.

Without further ado here is my list:

1st Round

  1. Ed Oliver, DL, Houston
  2. Jawaan Taylor, OL, Florida
  3. Cody Ford, OL, Oklahoma
  4. Brian Burns, Edge, Florida State
  5. Devin Bush, LB, Michigan

2nd Round

  1. Sean Bunting, DB, Central Michigan
  2. Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, DB, Florida
  3. Nasir Adderley, DB, Delaware
  4. Chase Winovich, Edge, Michigan
  5. Jonathan Abram, S, Mississippi State

3rd Round

  1. Miles Sanders, RB, Penn State
  2. Isaiah Johnson, DB, Houston
  3. Blake Cashman, LB, Minnesota
  4. Chuma Edoga, OL, USC
  5. Khalen Saunders, DT, Western Illinois

4th & 5th Round

  1. Renell Wren, DT, Arizona State
  2. Maxx Crosby, Edge, Eastern Michigan
  3. Jamal Davis, Edge, Akron
  4. Josh Oliver, TE, San Jose State
  5. Trysten Hill, DT, UCF
  6. Mike Weber, RB, Ohio State
  7. Lamont Gaillard, OL, Georgia
  8. Evan Worthington, DB, Colorado
  9. Mercole Hardman, WR, Georgia
  10. Joe Jackson, DE, Miami

6th & 7th Round

  1. Ryan Bates, OL, Penn State
  2. Iosua Opeta, OL, Weber State
  3. Anthony Johnson, WR, Buffalo
  4. John Cominsky, DE, Charleston
  5. Iman Marshall, DB, USC
  6. Gary Johnson, LB, Texas
  7. Darius Slayton, WR, Auburn
  8. Mitch Wishnowsky, P, Utah

Nice concept and list.   Everyone has a different view so I will give you mine on your list - I like a lot of it but will give you my quibbles

1st round:   Add: Christian Wilkins, Montez Sweat and Jonah Williams.  Subtract: Garrett Bradbury and Brian Burns.

Comments:  Wilkins is dayum very good interior rusher and has good size.  Can play on edge on 1st down and kick inside on passing downs.  Montez Sweat is a great passrusher with a variety of moves.  He has the speed of Beasley, is bigger and isn’t a one-trick pony like Beasley.  Jonah Williams is simply underrated by media at this point.  He CAN play right tackle and his arms aren’t a hindrance.  Versatile player that could play four positions.  Started as a Freshman at Bama - tons of experience. Bradbury and Burns are fine players but both lack power.   Burns could be very good but has some boom/bust to him because of body size - very thin.

2nd round:  I just believe this will most likely be the cornerback round.  Falcons have a screaming need there and corners go early.  I doubt Bunting makes it to our third round pick.   Mullen, Owariyue, Ya-Sin, Bunting, Joejuan etc.  IMHO, you should have 2-3CB options here.  Adderly is a nice safety as is the Bama guy but I don’t see us taking a safety in Day 2.  I like Omenihue on your list but don’t care for the rest.  Not a Winovich fan.  Tillery doesn’t fit the fast/physical mantra of DQ defense.

Add Joejuan Williams to the list

I took him off, and can't remember why. He's definitely in play at #45.

Add TJ Hockenson TE Iowa in the first round. He will definitely help the Atl defense by keeping them off the field.

Great player, but we've got bigger needs.

What greater need could we possibly have when one player can help the OL in the run game with his phenomenal blocking.

Extend drives & increase time of possession keeping the defense off of the field and fresh.

Red zone efficiency with his route running and pass catching ability. Turning what always were field goals into touchdowns. 6 points instead of 3 wins more football game. It really ain’t rocket science.

And last but not least he saves us $$$ by not being desperate next year to resign our All Pro TE.

If Atl had the chance to draft Gronk, would you do it ??

Off course you would and we can !! Make TJ Hockenson a Falcon !!

Seems like Hockenson is going to be off the board before 14 anyway.

Would also consider Ben Banogu maybe around round 4. He flashes on tape and has the highest ceiling out of just about all these DEs coming out.

Height: 6-3. Weight: 250. Arm: 33.38. Hand: 8.50.
40 Time: 4.62. 10-Yd: 1.56. Three Cone: 7.02.
Bench: 23. Vertical: 40. Broad: 11-2.

Look very good in the pass rush drills at the combine. Haven't watched any tape yet.

After the first 4 guys, this edge class underwhelms so far.
