Competent Experienced Back up QB is much more valuable that a kicker. We have already replaced our FG kicker.  Who you gonna get for QB that knows our system, and is experienced with it ?   Glad you are not handling Falcon money.

Yeah a back up an is not.as.valuable as the leading scorer on a team.

Be nice to have a hungry young qb to push Ryan to play at his best every snap.. Schaub puts no pressure on Ryan at all.. And don't buy Ryan is leaning anything from Schaub at this point.. Idk what Shaub could have taught anyone ever tbh.. Not like hes some hall of fame qb or something.

Exactly.

We need to find the next version of the Schaub we had originally, a young backup we could potentially trade... not keep hanging on to this old, busted *** version.

I mean even Brock Osweiler would've been a better option. At least he's had success against NFL starters in the past 7 years, Plus, he's had that success in the exact same Shanahan-style system Schaub did in Houston (both played for Kubiak). He's considerably younger, and he was paid $800k last year compared to the $4M we gave Schaub.

Pending the money, I am okay with this. I don't think anyone thinks Schaub can carry the team if Ryan gets injured, and no rookie is going to either. It's also not time to draft Ryan's successor.

Schaub worked in this offense for a number of years and I am sure he sees things on the field and acts as a second QB coach. With the rest of the upheaval in the staff that extra piece of continuity and what he offers as an experienced observer is probably more valuable than the alternatives. If Ryan were to get hurt we would be screwed regardless, so unless the actual numbers are stupid then this isn't something to get up in arms about.

If it's purely because he helps Matt in the QB room and on the practice field, then hire him as a coach/qb consultant. I'm sure everyone would be on board with a move like that. But wasting our cap-space, no matter how little it may be, on a player-coach is annoying.

@BiffSippman: Love the #Falcons bringing back the legend, Matt Schaub. Schaub guided the Falcons in the post Vick days to near Super Bowl contendership and then excelled in Houston. Have to think if Matt Ryan shows any signs of slippage, we could have a QB controversy on our hands. https://twitter.com/BiffSippman/status/1101907018833629184/photo/1

Wtf...

Matt Schaub.  The man, the myth, the legend.

This is why we're never rolling in cash. We waste money on players that don't contribute smh. Not that he's trash, but & knock on wood* Matt's been consistently healthy. Why invest that much into a backup

No, he's trash.  Came in for like one snap last year and put the ball on the turf...this is a terrible, TERRIBLE move, even for vet minimum, which we all know it isn't...

Dude, you might wanna brush up on who Matt Schaub is these days, not what he was a decade ago. We don't have the Schaub that backed up Vick, we have the one who is turning 38 this summer. His arm has been garbage for a long, long time now.

It has literally been 7 years since he was productive against a starting NFL defense. SEVEN YEARS. That was way back in 2012.

Since then, he blew his arm out & turned into a pick-6 factory.

In 2013, Schaub set an NFL record by throwing a pick-six in four straight game & Houston knew he was pretty much done, so they shipped him to he Raiders for a 6th round pick.

In 2014, Schaub was benched in favor of then rookie Derek Carr. Schaub. He got just 10 pass attempts on the year, which resulted in 2 INTs and 0 TDs. That one season was more than enough for the Raiders to know Schuab was busted & they cut ties.

In 2015, the Ravens signed him to be a backup. Flacco got hurt, so Schaub started 2 games & tossed another 4 INTs ( 2 of which were pick-sixes). He was benched in favor of Jimmy Freaking Clausen. When you get benched in favor of someone as awful as Clausen, you are bad. The Ravens knew this & didn't want anything to do with Schaub after that one season.

Since then, he has sat on our bench eating up far too much cap space to essentially be a QB coach. That's an important role, but not one that needs to be eating up valuable cap space. A guy who is 38 years old & has literally not been effective against NFL starters since Obama defeated Romney, should be on the coaching staff, not the roster.

Bottom line, Schaub offers NOTHING on the field as a QB at this point, so that silly living in the past narrative that Schaub could somehow win us 4 games if Matt Ryan was out needs to stop.

Not to mention tripping over his own feet and putting the ball on the turf for a turnover in his ONLY snap last year...I am disgusted by this decision...

Has any team ever tried having a coach become a player in midseason?

If Ryan went down in a game we were losing already and had to leave, would we all be so depressed that we did not care who the backup is and just accept the loss?  Or, if we were winning, would we really be surprised to see Schaub come in and blow the existing lead anyway?

Would the better option be just to have a rookie or sophomore backup come in instead and do the same thing?  Meanwhile, assistant coach Schaub could be added to the 53-man roster the next week as a FA signing and perhaps play the upcoming game if Ryan were out.

And, of course, would we expect much from a season if Ryan were out more than 3 weeks or so?

Yeah, I would rather see Levitre re-signed.   1-2 yr deal, low signing bonus, around 4-5 per...

Guess this tells us where the coaches think Benkert is in his development.

I think Schaub gets paid $4mm/yr  to be Matt Ryan’s buddy.

If any of us felt that he was still a  competent QB, we wouldn't bat an eye at this.

It's just at this point he is S. Deberg and we know how he did here when pressed into duty. If Ryan goes down, he isn't going to win games, so may as well have a cheap young QB learning behind Matt.

Matt has been instrumental in the offense— he is another eye who is very familiar with this scheme and gives Matt Ryan input during the game. He is more than a back-up for Matt Ryan . You guys need to read the article. Mattt S is more like another QB Coach.

Wtf...

No kidding that's just incredibly mind numbingly stupid. Schaub was TRADED BEFORE Vick left, it's impossible for him to have led the team post Vick. And he can't possibly be thinking of another Atlanta QB leading the Falcons to near Super Bowl contendership because the Falcons were 4-12 the year before Ryan got here.

Couldn't imagine anyone actually believing Shaub is a threat to Ryan under any circumstances..

He contributes in areas we can’t measure.  I promise he adds value.  It’s just not 5 mill/year worth of value.  This will be 2 years, 6 mill

That's still too much, how about 2 years 5 mil, with a 2 mil salary this year and gone next year?

If he adds nothing  if he takes the field, which I assume you agree with, why not have him retire and become a QB coach? Then, you can pay him what you want, doesn't affect the cap.
