Be like Matt: Falcons' Ryan featured in new television sitcom

28 posts in this topic

The season might be over for the Atlanta Falcons (7-9), but Matt Ryan is still getting some air time.

Sort of.

Ryan's high school persona will be featured in the new ABC sitcom "Schooled," which debuts at 8:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday. The show's creator and executive producer, Adam F. Goldberg, attended the same William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia where Ryan starred as a three-sport athlete in football, basketball and baseball. Goldberg also created the popular 1980s-based sitcom called "The Goldbergs."

Coach Rick Mellor, played by Bryan Callen, and Matty, played by Hunter Doohan, in which Matty talks about wanting to be a basketball star, following in the footsteps of Michael Jordan. Mellor, who has been at Penn Charter more than 40 years as a teacher and coach, coached Ryan in baseball.

Ryan played small forward on the Penn Charter basketball team. His football coach, Brian McCloskey, once said he wouldn't have counted Ryan out had the 6-foot-4, 217-pound Ryan decided to pursue a professional basketball career.

It's safe to say Ryan fared rather well sticking with football.

The former triple-option quarterback was the NFL's MVP during the 2016 season. Ryan finished this past season with 4,924 passing yards, his second-highest total behind his MVP season (4,944). Plus, Ryan currently sits 12th on the all-time passing list with 46,720 yards.

And now he has a TV character based on him. Not bad.

Duuh! Matty Ice went 0-8 in FGs with 1-2 free throws to score 2 whole points in the 2003 Pennsylvania State Championships!

So Ryan played like crap, but he WON the championship. That's some bizarro **** right there.

At least he won’t be doing the acting...

”Anybody seen a shirt?”

LOL. That was like his rookie year. I wonder how many takes that final shot took.  Ryan looked a lot better in the Gatorade commercial though.

The show only FEATURES Matts high school persona i believe; so the show isn't all about him.

The goldbergs would have the actual people playing grown adults. I wouldn't be surprised to see Matt make a cameo at some point.

I don't watch the Goldberg's so I don't know much about their universe but i believe it's set in the 90s so Matt himself wouldnt actually be on the show.

I thought the kid playing him was pretty well cast from a physical standpoint. They did a segment at the end credits with Matt sitting down and talking to his former coach, who's character on the show is a regular. It was pretty cool to see in my opinion.

Goldbergs is set in the 80s. A lot of the kids in the show played by younger actors will interact with cameo's by their older real selfs. If Matt appears as a kid on the show, there is a good chance he might reappear in a cameo.

Oh ok, well that makes sense. I dont think Matt's High School persona is in the Goldberg's. But gain I don't know much about the show; just seen the reports on the show "Schooled" a spin off of The Goldbergs(if I'm also not mistaken about that).

you called it. Matt didn't make a cameo but he appeared on the show with his former coach to talk about being inspired and mentored by him
