2019 OffSeason Re-Tooling Plan

67 posts in this topic

OK here’s the first cut of my offseason retooling plan. It will certainly change with league cuts, free agency, injury updates, off field indiscretions, combines and work outs coming up in the next few months. Long post. Please don’t quote entire post. Let’s start with the staff.

  • General Manager – this is an important off-season. A lot of key decisions need to be made in terms of cuts, walkers and extensions. He's still failed to solve the issues in the trenches. This has to be resolved to get what we want. Our current lines won't stand up to the teams we have to beat
  • Head Coach – Quinn needs to improve his in-game adjustments, clock management and situational decisions. He also needs to alter both schemes, whether he keeps his coordinators or not. I believe both DQ and Dimi should be on the hot seat in 2019. A playoff berth or to the State Line
  • Coordinators – on the fence with the OC and DC. Both get somewhat of an injury pass, but I'm very disappointed in how long it took them to adjust to the injuries. With that said, I’d only replace them with a proven coordinator with substantial success. Kubiak or Zimmer (if he's fired). Cut Armstrong
  • Position Coaches – with the exception of maybe the QB and TE coach, they all could get gone tomorrow. I don’t think they’re developing the players fast enough and they have not been able to coach out the drops, whiff blocks, dropped picks, missed tackles and stupid penalties. Heads should roll

These are the 40 players currently under contract as of 12/31/18, as well as our open roster spots:

  • QB – Matt Ryan, OPEN
  • WR – Julio Jones, Mohamed Sanu, Calvin Ridley, Russell Gage, OPEN
  • RB – Devonta Freeman, Ito Smith, Brian Hill, Ricky Ortiz, Jeremy Langford
  • TE – Austin Hooper, Eric Saubert, OPEN
  • OC – Alex Mack, OPEN
  • OG – Brandon Fusco, Wes Schweitzer, OPEN, OPEN
  • OT – Jake Matthews, Ryan Schraeder, Matt Gono, OPEN
  • DE – Vic Beasley, Takkarist McKinley, Brooks Reed, OPEN, OPEN
  • DT – Jack Crawford, Deadrin Senat, Justin Zimmer, OPEN
  • LB – Deion Jones, De’Vondre Campbell, Foyesade Oluokun, Duke Riley, OPEN, OPEN
  • CB – Desmond Trufant, Robert Alford, Isaiah Oliver, OPEN, OPEN
  • FS – Ricardo Allen, Damontae Kazee, Ryan Neal
  • SS – Keanu Neal, Sharrod Neasman
  • K – Matt Bryant, Giorgio Tavecchio
  • P – Matt Bosher
  • LS – Josh Harris

We currently have $24.7M in cap space according to OTC. There should be a few cap casualties. Here are a few possibilities with their Pre-June 1 savings. I’d cut these guys to free up $39.7M and get to $64.4M under the cap. There could be another couple mil with Post-June 1 designations to establish an emergency fund. Who would you cut?

  • DE - Vic Beasley - $12.8M
  • WR - Julio Jones - $8.1M
  • CB - Robert Alford - $7.9M
  • WR - Mohamed Sanu - $4.6M
  • DE - Brooks Reed - $4.5M
  • OT - Ryan Schrader - $4.0M
  • OG - Brandon Fusco - $3.3M
  • K - Matt Bryant - $2.8M
  • P - Matt Bosher - $2.6M
  • DT - Jack Crawford - $2.5M
  • FB – Ricky Ortiz - $0.6M
  • DT – Justin Zimmer - $0.6M
  • FS – Ryan Neal - $0.6M

We have some decisions to make on contract extensions with a few key starters. I would extend them all with an additional $10.0M in 2019 cap hit and spread the rest over future years. That would leave us with $54.4M in available space. Which ones would you extend?

  • Julio Jones
  • Deion Jones
  • Austin Hooper
  • DeVondre Campbell

We have 22 of our own players due to be free agents. I've assigned a back loaded 2019 cap hit in case we want to re-sign any of them. I’d re-sign these guys at a $27.0M cap hit in 2019 which would bring us down to $27.4M in space. The rest can walk. Which ones would you bring back?

  • DT - Grady Jarrett - $15.0M, Terrell McClain - $1.5M
  • DE – Bruce Irvin - $5.0M, Steven Means - $1.0M, Derrick Shelby - $2.0M,
  • CB - Brian Poole - $2.0M, Blidi Wreh-Wilson - $0.7M, Justin Bethel - $1.8M
  • OT – Ty Sambrailo - $2.0M
  • OG – Zane Beadles - $1.0M, Andy Levitre - $5.7M, Ben Garland - $2.9M
  • WR - Marvin Hall - $1.0M , Justin Hardy - $1.0M
  • RB - Tevin Coleman - $4.0M
  • LB - Bruce Carter $0.6M
  • FS – Keith Tandy - $0.7M
  • SS – Kemal Ishmael - $1.0M, Jordan Richards - $1.0M
  • TE – Logan Paulsen - $0.7M
  • QB - Matt Schaub - $4.5M
  • LS – Jon Condo - $1.0M

We'll need to add 16 players between free agency, draft and trade to get to a 53 man roster. We have nine picks and a balance of $27.4M in cap space at this point. Here are a few possible street free agents that could hit the market. There are dozens more. I would add these five guys with a year one cap hit of $21.0M which would leave $6.4M for the draft. All of them are established vets between 24 and 29 years old who would know how to play NFL football on day one. Who would you add?

  • OT - Bobby Massie, Jordan Mills, Ja'Wuan James Jared Veldheer
  • OG - Quinton Spain, Rodger Saffold, James Carpenter
  • QB - Teddy Bridgewater, Trevor Siemian, Tyrod Taylor, Sam Bradford
  • DT - Malcom Brown, Johnathan Hankins, Danny Shelton, Jordan Phillips, Bennie Logan, Ndamukong Suh, Sheldon Richardson, Kyle Williams
  • RB - Leveon Bell, Mark Ingram, Latavius Murray, T.J. Yeldon, Lagarette Blount
  • FB – Jamize Olawale, Anthony Sherman, Dimitri Flowers
  • WR - Golden Tate, Randall Cobb, Devin Funchess, Tavon Austin
  • TE - Tyler Eifert, Jared Cook, Benjamin Watson, Marcedes Lewis
  • OC - Ryan Khalil, Bret Jones, Mitch Morse, Nick Easton
  • DE - Demarcus Lawrence, JaDaveon Clowney, Ezekiel Ansah, Cameron Wake, Brandon Graham, Derrick Morgan, Brian Orakpo, Dee Ford, Preston Smith
  • LB - Deone Buchanan, C.J. Mosley, Clay Matthews, K.J. Wright, Anthony Barr, Terrell Suggs, Manti Teo, Denzel Perryman
  • CB - Vontae Davis, Brent Grimes, Buster Skrine, Morris Claiborne
  • FS - Lamarcus Joyner, Earl Thomas, Tyrann Mathieu, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix
  • SS - Marcus Gilchrist, Kenny Vaccaro, Eric Reid
  • K - Stephen Gostkowski, Phil Dawson, Robbie Gould, Sebastian Janikowski
  • P - Ryan Allen, Jordan Berry, Pat O'Donnell

At this point most of our glaring holes would be filled, with the exception of maybe CB and RG. We could have as many as nine draft picks. I would go BPA in every round. Add play makers and get stacked. We’re picking 14th. Here are a few guys I like that could be on the board when we pick in the first round. Some may be gone but others could drop that aren’t shown. Who would you go after in the first?

  • Devin White, Jachai Polite, Clelin Ferrell, Jeffrey Simmons, Derrick Brown, Raekwon Davis, Rashan Gary, Byron Murphy, DeAndre Baker, Christian Wilkins, Dexter Lawrence, Cody Ford, Montez Sweat, Martez Ivey

There are offseason injury questions to be answered with Free, Neal and Rico, but at this point I'd go something like this which I think would be an improvement:

  • QB – Matt Ryan, Teddy Bridgewater
  • WR – Julio Jones, Calvin Ridley, Mohamed Sanu, Marvin Hall, Russell Gage, UDFA (PR)
  • RB – Devonta Freeman, Ito Smith, Brian Hill, Jeremy Langford
  • TE – Austin Hooper, Eric Saubert, Draft
  • OC – Alex Mack, Draft
  • OG – Quinton Spain, Zane Beadles, Wes Schweitzer, Draft
  • OT – Jake Matthews, Bobbie Massie, Ty Sambrailo, Matt Gono
  • DE – Takkarist McKinley, Bruce Irvin, Steven Means, Draft
  • DT – Grady Jarrett, Malcom Brown, Jack Crawford, Deadrin Senat, Draft
  • LB – Deion Jones, De’Vondre Campbell, Foyesade Oluokun, Duke Riley, Draft, UDFA (ST)
  • CB – Desmond Trufant, Isaiah Oliver, Brian Poole, Draft
  • FS – Ricardo Allen, Damontae Kazee, Draft
  • SS – Keanu Neal, Sharrod Neasman, Draft
  • K – Giorgio Tavecchio
  • P – Ryan Allen
  • LS – Josh Harris

Nice write up. You are more brave than me on the cuts approach! :ninja:

:munch:it will be interesting to see how FA pans out. Draft day is just so far from now let's get some semblance of FA in mind first. Decisions on VB, TeCo, Grady's price to be back, and whenever they decide to extend Julio matters a lot in house. The cuts are beyond me because of risking a lot of dead money with important guys coming due again after 2019 season like Debo and Hoop.

The cuts are aggressive but I'm serious about fixing the trenches once and for all. The cuts create $8.8M in dead money but would be similar to the purge Dimi made in 2013 when he got rid of Abe, Clabo and RobbinUs. I would probably designate Shredder or ButtaFusco as post June 1 cuts to shift some of the dead money as well as free up about $3M in 2019 in cap space for an emergency fund.

Nice write-up.

We need a real FB again. I view that as a big of a need as any. Heck, I'd even consider trading a 7th or something for DiMarco back.

Rather than spending money on Bridgewater I would get a starting caliber LB. At the end of the day, if Ryan goes down our season is likely over anyway. Spend a 4th or 5th round compensation pick on a project QB. Use that money to get someone that will start in our base defense at WLB. Someone like Anthony Barr would be nice, a guy who can play either SLB or WLB. I know he has had his issues this year which should make him somewhat more affordable.

Good point. I struggled with the FB position, but with a new OC coming on board it might be less of a need depending on who we land. We played Hill at FB a couple times. Not his natural position but he played it better than Ortiz IMO. An undrafted free agent could be a good option there.

Agree with WLB possibly needing an upgrade. Foye showed some flashes there and could be the answer with a year two leap. Several mocks show Devin White dropping to us. If that happens I'm probably taking him. I'd put him at MLB and move Debo out to WLB. Our LB corps would be incredibly fast and physical. With that LB unit and Malcom Brown at NT the run defense should be fixed.

QB free agent this year is weak and some say teddy is the #1 prospect. He’s going to be stop-gap starter somewhere. As well, the saints traded a 3rd round pick for him in a year that they don’t even have a first round. I don’t think they’re just going to let him walk.

Really Nice work FF70.

Glad to see you’re keeping our shiny hood ornament too! :ninja:

Only forced to by the Juliooottes. Still don't think he's the key to a Bowl. He's been on the roster for eight years now. Half of em non-winning seasons. Julio, AB, OBJ, DHop, Fitz, Randy, T.O., Carter and Reed still have a combined ZERO rings. DHop may finally break the slump but I doubt it. Hopefully we fix the engine this year which makes a shiny hood ornament way more acceptable. If he gets squirrly in these contract negotiations, move him for picks/players.

Why’d you cut Bosher? I think he’s awesome for us. Otherwise I really like this man. Very thought out and practical.

Thanks man. Bosher has been in the bottom half of the league in punting for two years running now. He has a hitch in his punting giddyup that led to two blocks and struggles getting kick offs to the end zone all of a sudden. That one big hit didn't change that.

I wouldn't bank on Quinn improving on adjustments, clock management, or situational decisions.

You either "get it" in those areas or you don't, and he doesn't.

There was another write up I read where it was pointed out clearly that Quinn doesn't even realize the mistakes he makes in these areas are actually mistakes. I agree woth that completely and because of that and the fact he is making the same mistakes now that he made 2 years ago; that isn't going to change.

Best we can hope for is an assistant head coach of some sort to take over there, leaving Quinn to be the rah-rah bruthahood guy, and DC.

Everything else though... we can do, and the analysis of what needs to be done is solid.
