We currently have $26.5M in cap space. Keep in mind Grady is a free agent, Julio wants a new deal and we might want to extend Debo, Dre and Hoop next year. There could be a few cap casualties. Here are a few casualty options with their Pre-June 1 savings. Who would you cut?

  • DE - Vic Beasley - $12.8M
  • WR - Julio Jones - $8.1M
  • CB - Robert Alford - $7.9M

  • DT - Jack Crawford - $2.5M

We have 22 of our own players due to be free agents. I've assigned a back loaded 2019 cap hit in case we want to re-sign any of them. Which ones would you bring back?

We'll need to add 17 players plus any cap casualty replacements to get to a 53 man roster. Here are a few free agents that might hit the market. There are dozens more:

  • QB - Sam Bradford, Tyrod Taylor, Teddy Bridgewater, Trevor Siemian
  • RB - Leveon Bell, Mark Ingram, Latavius Murray, T.J. Yeldon, Lagarette Blount

I would cut Alford and Shelby. Re-sign Grady, Irvin and Wreh-Wilson. Draft the best DL that falls to us (lots of talent in the draft), followed by a guard or tackle in the 2nd. Sign K.J. Wright.

Don't need to cut Shelby he's on a one year deal.

70 nice post too man appreciate the time and effort.

Alot of information there.

Personally I think alot are playing for spots.I'd pin it and ask again in another month or 2 things will reveal themselves better then.

I think you give all the guys injured I'd keep for another year and see how that pans out.

Cut Beasley, Schrader & Reed. Use some of that money on 2 long term guys who will be instant-starters on the offensive line.

The Falcons are already behind the numbers on the dline with Beasley on the roster.

if they cut him along with Shelby, Reed, and Irving who are they replacing them with?

Thats 4 players and they won’t have enough cap space to pick up 2 decent FA dline men let alone 4.... especially now that they need to replace the RT and a Guard.

My bad I meant Reed. Edited.

The Grady cap number is also very optimistic

His agent is going to have incredible leverage and it’s doubtful the Falcons tag him.

If Grady hits the FA market watch out. Falcons won’t be able to match a bidding war for him.

Our defensive and offensive lines will be in shambles next year. That's about all I know. We need 2 guards, a replacement for Mack, a pass rusher, at least one DT, a **** ton of money to keep the other one....and we could we use another line backer.

It's bad.

It's not as bad as you think you get Debo Neal Rico Levitre if we choose to Free back I think we aren't as far away as many think.

We also have plenty of opportunity to upgrade with FA and the draft.

We're going to need to break the bank to keep Grady. That's going to mean making some hard cuts across the board and a struggle to get to 53 with a serviceable roster.

So essentially we're going to need another 2016 like draft haul and a lot of injury luck to be competitive next year. OL and DL are going to be the hardest for us. I know it looks like all of defense has gaps but we are going to have to lean on DQ's track record on coaching up LBs and DBs.

Drafting well when it's a dire need is low probability but every time we've counted this team out on the draft, they have delivered.  Drafting well and coaching up "scrubs" - teams paying their QB this much money have no other path to success.

Cut Matt Bryant, Levitre, and Alford.  Alford, in my opinion, will be the toughest cut.  It will be time for Oliver to step up into a starting role.  Bryant has been great, but is simply too old.  We found his replacement, who is not proven, but good enough to get the job done.

I don't think Beasley will attract high offers in FA.  He is a complimentary, one-dimensional pass rusher and will likely get paid accordingly.  I think McKinley will continue to develop and finally become the dominant pass rusher we have been waiting for.  Keep Bruce Irving who is aging, but provides rotational depth at a reasonable salary.

Sign one OG in FA, but this time, spend smart money on a true starting talent.  I think Iupati or Warmack might be good choices.  Both are big, strong blockers with good athleticism.  Levitre is good but is getting old, plays just above average (when healthy) and is too much of a chronic injury risk.  Replace Levitre with a real LG talent and role the dice with Fusco at RG.  Consider replacing the OL position coach.

Open competition between Gono and Schraeder at RT.  The loser gets a shot at swing tackle and back up OG.  I would love to sign a FA OT, but we simply will not have the cap space for that move.  If we can fortify the interior OL, we will be able to work around a weaker RT......for now.

If we are lucky enough to get Q Williams, then all bets are off.  This is unlikely, but I wanted to throw that in.  More realistically, draft a CB in the first round.  The kid out of UGA looks good.  We will need to replace Trufant in a year.  Neal and Debo will be the next signings and I would gladly dump Trufant for these two young defenders.

Find a second round DT, in this supposedly deep DT class......preferably one that can hold ground and create a decent bull rush.  I would prefer to draft an OL, but from what I am reading the talent pool is a bit shallow this year.

Senat looks promising and should rotate with Jarrett to provide an interior pass rush.

Keep Poole and Sanu.  Both are true tough guys and add that character to their respective units.

Jarrett is a must sign.

Cut Bryant and sign Tavecchio.  That will save 4.1 million minus whatever Tavecchio costs.

Tavecchio is good, but Bryant is one of the clutchest players in the league. Can't cut him until he regresses. Bosher is getting paid way too much IMO. He's the one I'd go after.

Not sure about cut but there's two free agent moves other than sign some of our own we should make that will make a huge difference and 2 draft picks.

1. Sign one of those DEs

2. Sign one of those LBs

3. Draft one of the top OGs

4. Draft a DT in the 1st or 2nd round

Those positions are the root cause of our problems for the short and long term.

Not me man, can't wait for the chopping to begin.

Likewise. I'm in full offseason mode. Last time the majority of us were like this we made the Super Bowl the next year.

Quinn with 9 draft picks to use is going to be nasty.

I agree.  I think the team actually has a lot of options and can do some good things, but it really depends on how serious the management is about winning and making changes.

Wow...you didn't have to look far to find the obvious cap space winner hear. You could literally pay 1/3 of Beasley's cap savings for his current level of production. As sad as it is to say, Reed is probably an equal pass rusher and can do other things better. The only thing that Beasley is sportatically good at is spying athletic QBs.

Thanks for the entire post. Great info. I'll have digest it for a while.

The Julio thing isn't going away. How the FO and Quinn handle that may well have a bigger impact on their legacy than any other single roster decision. Can they address the issue in a win/win way? He is in that area where everyone will agree on his value, but your not going to find anyone to give you that full value in a trade: "Yes, he's worth what you are asking. No, we won't pay it."
