Braves Playoff Thread

112 posts in this topic

It's a little early....but so what. I'm ready!  Let's talk playoffs! Braves playoffs!

I'm looking ahead at how the playoff tree is coming together. I could be wrong, but looks like to me we may face either Colo, or LA as our first opponent? That is if the season ended as of today. Correct me if I'm wrong. How exactly does the seeding go? And no WC from the east as of today too am I right?

So ready for the second season! seems like it's been forever! Chop on!

If the season ended today the Braves would host the Rockies and the Cubs would host the winner of the WC game between the Dodgers and Brewers in Milwaukee.

Here is the current seeding,

  1. Cubs
  2. Braves
  3. Rockies
  4. Brewers
  5. Dodgers

The only teams still alive in the WC are Cubs, Brewers, Cardinals, Rockies and Dodgers. All East teams were eliminated last week. We are playing the West winner unless something crazy happens and we gain 3 games on the Cubs in 4 days.

I think the Braves could pass the Cubs. But I don't think they'll pass the Brewers. Cubs have the Cardinals over the weekend so that will be tough for them because the Cardinals are fighting for their playoff lives. The Brewers on the other hand have the Tigers in Milwaukee and last check the Brewers still had the best home record in the NL.

All of those teams have given us fits this season. All have great starting pitching which has been our Achilles with hitting.... If some early inning miracle we get to their bullpens early, we have a fighting chance.

Actually, the Braves have done amazing work this year against the best starting pitchers in baseball. The Braves as a team have the highest batting average in baseball against 95 mph plus pitches which is one of the reasons for all the amazing comebacks.

The Braves rotation is set up Folty/Sanchez/Gausman for the final series. My guess is it will be exactly that for the first three games of the NLDS, in that order.

I'd also guess there's a change they would bring Folty back on three days rest for a game 4.

I would have had Newcomb mixed somewhere in there

Newcomb is our worst pitcher right now. His ERA is 4.63 since July. Julio has a 3.86 in that span, Folty 3.18, Sanchez 3.32, Gausman 3.26. I'm going Julio over Newcomb in Game 4 right now.

The analytics don't lie. We'll soon enough see how Snit lines them up. But having Folty, Sanchez, Gausman, then Julio....that's a righty rich rotation. Wouldn't it be strategically beneficial to have a lefty in the mix? Such as Newcomb.

it would, which is why I wouldn't rule out Newcomb, but they could also go with Max Fried too. TBH though, it's hard to see them giving either a start. I think it will be Julio, with Newk and/or Fried ready on a hair-trigger if it looks like it's going to go bad.

Interesting to see which direction we go, but not a bad situation to be in. If Snit does decide to go all right handers to start then bring in a Lefty for relief like Newk or Fried, I can see that working to our advantage.

Except Newcombs last 5 road starts are really good.

Aren't the Dodgers really bad against LHP too?

That is where I'd start Newcomb. Dodgers are hitting .214 against LHP and have been shutout 3 of the last 4 times they faced one. He nearly no hit them in Atlanta but they hammered him in LA.  Keith Law actually suggested the Braves piggyback some guys in that game. Let Touki go a couple times through then throw in Newcomb/Julio.

I agree with that strategy. Treat it like a bullpen game. Newcomb, Touki, Fried all throw a couple innings.

Mark Bowman reporting Swanson's hand has improved. He'll attempt to swing a bat this weekend. If that goes well he may indeed be ready to go for the NLDS.

Snitker said Max Fried is very much in the postseason discussion. Snitker says they may use him as a specialist or middle relief option. Touki is looking like the long man. Braves trying to do whatever they can to get outs with some key arms struggling. Snitker also said they may carry Rene Rivera if Swanson is out. Snitker would then use Suzuki/Flowers as his primary PH. If Swanson is healthy then Culberson can fill that void.

I'm not asking for it to be a day game. I just want the start to be after 8 or if it's a day game for it to end before 6.
