gear acquisition syndrome thread

Dudes. I'm so into this THR10X. It sounds ridiculous. really appreciate the heads up on it. I never would have found it were it not for y'all (hat tip to Mr. Hoopah!).

For recording at low volume, I'm thinking it would work to run the headphone out from the amp > my Scarlett 2i2 interface > laptop running Reaper. Any idea if there's an advantage to using the USB out on the THR?

Circling around to pedal boards, which I've never used, and know next to nothing about:

I generally play two kinds of music: very distorted metal, and very quiet, reverby ambient. They require two very different pedal setups, obviously. Metal jams get a distortion pedal, and ambient uses 4-5 reverb/sustainer/delays. It's annoying to have to constantly switch between the two setups.

If I put everything on one pedalboard, I'm assuming they can all coexist. How do pedalboard power supplies work? Do I still have to have separate power cables, all with their massive wall warts, for each pedal? Or are there pedalboards that have power supplies built in?

A lot of the ambient pedals I use (mostly Boss) are really finicky about power supplies.

Thanks, as always. It's nice to have y'all here instead of having to go to a weird music board where everyone tells me to spend $1000 on some boutique piece of gear.

I would start by researching how big of a board you want to build. That way you know how many pedals you have to power up. What kind of voltage the pedals require,  most are 9v but some are 18v. The type of power supply you use is important in order  to avoid electronic interference. I highly recommend voodoo lab power supplies. They make a board I use called the dingbat and the power supply is  already mounted in so you can avoid drilling and pulling out the power tools lol.

For what it's worth, I use 2 small boards now so my only power supply (for the larger of the two) is an MXR Mini Brick.  However, I've used Voodoo Lab and TrueTone and I really prefer the latter.  It was quieter and it just seems better designed.  The Voodoo Lab designs are older and robust and very good, so you can't go wrong.  Just don't be afraid to try the TrueTone stuff.  I had the CS12 and it was outstanding.

Agree with everything else @heyme, especially the part about "be careful."

Also, you need a fuzz face.

I use two boards as well. I use the trex fuel tank jr on my small board. It works great as well. But would only recommend for a small board. It has only 5 power units and is limited to 9v only.

So essentially, the board and the power supply are two separate things? I can build a board, I suspect.

Yes you just have to be able to mount the supply

Correct on both counts.  Boards can be expensive or cheap. I think I paid $35 for the Pedaltrain Nano+ (used, thanks @Mr. Hoopah!) and around $30 for my small board.  But the small one only has 2 pedals on it -- a Sunlion and a tuner.

One more thing, Velcro sucks! I use 3M dual lock and couldn’t imagine using anything else moving forward.

Ive never used velcro or tape on any of my pedals and haven't had a issue.. I use all short chain cables so that may help.. But if you ever decide to sale the pedals, some people are extremely picky about that

Im not, what happened?

"The charges were laid in 1998, after the then-52-year-old was arrested at his Los Angeles home, along with his wife.

MTV reports that inappropriate material found on a computer Wachtel had taken in for repair. Printed copies of some of the pornographic images were also discovered in his home, leading to Wachtel being charged with both possession and duplication of child porn.

The rocker eventually pleaded no contest to the charges. Pleading no contest basically means that a defendant doesn’t admit or dispute the charges against them, but accepts the punishment handed down to them.

Now 70, the famous guitarist was placed on probation for three years following his charges and was freely allowed to enter Australia earlier this month for the tour.

According to the Los Angeles Times, he was also forced to make a $2,500 donation to the Children of the Night charity at the time and underwent six months’ counselling as a result of the incident."
