Can't look at the draft in isolation. We need to see who the UDFA signings are and also look at FA signings.

If you include Free Agency, our Special Teams in 2018 should be massively better than the recent past, with Bethel and our late draft picks. We were up and down on ST last year so this should be a win.

We've clearly added big weapons to our O with Ridley and Ito. That said, we still have big holes at TE and FB.

On Defense, we got our 3rd CB who can team up with Tru and Alford and gives us an elite defensive backfield. Senat gives us a rotational guy but I still see our DL going backwards unless we sign some FA or someone new steps up.

I think the Falcons are going to go with the 3 best options at corner and that's going to be the more experienced guys/

Given how banged up people get at the position, it wouldn't surprise me if Oliver is functionally a starter in December, presuming he's not one of the injured players.

B-

I'm crazy ecstatic about the first two picks.  BPA and just awesome value.  Both immediate starters that will make big impacts and absolutely make our offense and defense noticeably better.

I'm cautiously optimistic about Dead Run Snot.  If DQ wanted and likes this guy, then I'm betting he's going to be a monster for us.

I'm totally WTF about the RB selection only because I thought we were incorporating a power run game into our offense to bolster our short yardage and goal line woes.  So getting a Freeman clone is puzzling.  The reason I'm not entirely disappointed, however, is because if Ito is actually close to a Freeman clone, then it's a homerun pick.  Who in their right mind wouldn't love to have an RB corps of 2 Devonta Freeman's and a Tevin Coleman??  That would be insane.  BUT... if Ito turns out to just be Terron Ward 2.0, then it's a major fail pick.  Although I will say this, if Ito can be a decent Kick Returner, then I'll be happy either way.

As for Gage, well blah.  Boring.  I get it, he's a kickoff tackling machine at gunner, and maybe shifty enough to get a game snap gadget play here and there.  But didn't we just spend like $1.4M on Justin Bethel to be a kickoff gunner specialist?  We only get to dress 46 for games.  Is there even room for multiple guys who do nothing but ST gunner??  This just feels like a wasted pick.

Now I get the Oluokun pick.  6'2, 230, runs 4.5, hits like a mack truck, and can play SS and multiple LB spots, plus be a killer on ST?  Okay, I'm good with that.  In fact, let him compete with Duke for the 200-300 WILL/WOLB snaps, and back up Neal at the same time.

Now all that said, where the heck is our DT depth?  Where is our FB?  Where is our 225 lb power RB?

I sure hope we're bringing in Nick Bawden, Dimitri Flowers, and/or Ryan Nall as UDFA FB possibilities.  And signing someone like Hankins or Rubin to add to DT depth.  And maybe Mark Thompson as that possible big RB option.

I guarantee you that Calvin Ridley gets at least 60 catches in 2018.

Sanu had 67 catches last season so I'm going to go with the under on that.

First 2 picks were slam dunks in my opinion. The 3rd wasn’t sexy but I like the matchup next to Grady Jarrett. The 4th pick makes less than zero sense in my opinion and I’ll just have to sit back and hope to be proven wrong. The two 6th round picks look nice.

All in all, it’s a B+. I would give it an easy A if we take somebody other than Ito in the 4th.

Like the draft a lot but I agree the RB pick bothers me, like the Brian Hill pick last year.

WR wasn't a luxury pick. Falcons desperately needed someone to take pressure off Julio and Sanu.

I agree.  I was saying Ridley was a luxury pick...WR was not.  I'm glad we got the best receiver but I do not think we were 1st round receiver needy.

Julio had 54 his first year. Definitely looking at quality over quantity with Ridley next year.

You're going to looooove Ito Smith.

Hmm may have spoke too soon. I saw his measurable and didn't think we needed a back like that. He is definitely not a Devonta Freeman clone. Freeman is short area quickness and power, this guy is quickness and speed. I think he has return potential and reminds me of Tarik Cohen.

  • Julio - 75 Catches
  • Ridley - 60 Catches
  • Sanu - 50 Catches
  • Hooper - 45 Catches

In 2016 Julio had 83, Sanu 59, Freeman 54, Gabriel 35, Coleman 31, Tamme 22, Hardy 21, Robinson 20, Hooper 19.

In 2017 Julio had 88, Sanu 67, Hooper 59, Freeman 36, Gabriel 33, Coleman 27, Hardy 20.

Now, here's my reasoning behind Ridley having such an impact as a rookie. We no longer have Gabriel. Freeman and Coleman aren't as involved in the passing game under Sark as they were under Shanahan. I also think when we go to 2 WR sets, I think we'll see quite a bit of Julio and Ridley out there together, or even Sanu, Ridley together. I think the Falcons will try to rest Julio more this year.

I have never been so disappointed in the Falcons front office time today.

1 this draft  was racist

2 all the players racket yourself or 2 will probably not be in the NFL how long.

Really the only one that went down in terms of catchers was freeman.

Ridley is a good player but he was not a desperate need....he was a want.

Again good player but not the need that people making him out to be.

Not a desperate need. Did you watch the Bills game last year when both Sanu and Julio got hurt? The Falcons couldn't do squat on offense. Had the Falcons not drafted one of the top notch WR's then who would be the WR's behind Sanu and Julio? Justin Hardy, Marvin Hall and Reggie Davis. Boy, we've seen that show before and it's not pretty. The people that don't think WR was a desperate need are the folks that wanted the Falcons to draft a DT in the 1st round just because and bitching about the Falcons always drafting for need and reaching for players instead of draft BPA. The Falcons draft BPA and you people are still bitching about it. Some people just can't be pleased.

Congratulations. This is by far the stupidest thing I have ever read on this message board. A permanent ban should be issued to you.

My thoughts on draft only --not including FAs signed

OFFENSE   skilled positions only -----  no help for O-line (lower priority)

they improved the WR corp

they improved the RB corp

nothing for TE corp

nothing for FB

DEFENSE

partially fixed the DT problem ( can FAs signed complete the fix??)

improved the CB corps

partially fixed the LB Corp (I think they might need one more backup)

Safeties (nod to safety on LB/S player)

SPECIAL TEAMS

improved return team (greatly I hope)

improved coverage team (greatly I hope)

I'm not letting the later picks deviate my grade. This was an A draft. We absolutely nailed our first 3 picks. I like what I've seen from Ito. Don't like the Gage pick at all, especially since it cost us both 7ths. Foye was a solid pick but would have preferred a couple other guys. I'm hoping we do well with UDFAs.

Gage was in mayocks top 100 and we didn't give up two 7ths to get him.
