Are the Falcons interested in DT Maurice Hurst?

It’s been crickets with possible interest, which is weird.

By Cory Woodroof@CoryWoodroof47  Apr 21, 2018, 10:00am EDT

So, it’s getting closer and closer to draft night, and the Falcons are getting in their last pre-draft visits, workouts and meetings.

While, sure, not every visit, workout and meeting gets reported, most of them do, and we’ve got a good list so far of the potential visits available from our own head honcho Dave Choate and our friend Aaron Freeman. If you’re at all curious of all the draft prospects the team has zoned in on this pre-draft process, you’ll have your fill of names.

Different organizations do different things in different eras, but in the Dan Quinn era of Falcons football, it’s actually, in retrospect, a good thing to track. They’ve only drafted a handful of players that didn’t have previously-reported interest — G Wes Schweitzer, CB Jalen Collins, T Jake Rodgers, CB Damontae Kazee and TE Eric Saubert.

Schweitzer did have his college position coach, Keith Carter, in the building as an advocate, and there have been rumblings that Quinn wasn’t interested in Collins, which ended up being Thomas Dimitroff’s call. Rodgersgot cut before the 2015 season, and Kazee and Saubert came with added draft picks via trade.

That means Vic BeasleyTevin ColemanGrady JarrettTakkarist McKinleyKeanu NealDeion Jones, De’Vondre Campbell, Duke RileyAustin HooperJustin HardyDevin FullerAkeem King and Brian Hill all got verified looks by the team before their draft selections.

In this year’s report, guys like Da’Ron Payne, Vita Vea and Taven Bryan pop up, as do first-round talents like Rashaan Evans, Leighton Vander Esch, Hayden Hurst, Isaiah Wynn, James Daniels, Kolton Miller, Mike McGlinchey and Jaire Alexander.

So, if we’re going by the trend, and no other names come up, one of those guys is your next Atlanta Falcon.

There’s still time on the clock, but one really big name is missing: Michigan DT Maurice Hurst.

Hurst is one of the top-rated defensive tackles in the draft, known for his pass rush ability and motor. He’s got everything Quinn likes in a prospect, but curiously, isn’t registered in any piece of Falcons draft news. Not one. Unless he’s featured in a mock draft, Hurst and Atlanta don’t come up in the same conversations.

Now, that’s not to say that it won’t happen within the next week or so, and Atlanta did attend Michigan’s Pro Day, but historically, the Falcons get linked to the guys they draft, especially the guys that go in the first round. They haven’t been linked to Hurst...at all. Unless something changes within the week, this doesn’t look like it’s going to happen at the moment.

Now, yes, again, not every pick gets reported, so it’s hypothetically possible the team has interest in him yet. But, look, this isn’t all that secretive. These visits, workouts and meetings get reported in bulk, and more often than not, we have a pretty good idea of where things are going. Beasley, Neal and McKinley all had met with the team before their selections.

Right now, the cricket choir is playing a ditty for Atlanta and Hurst. This isn’t at all to say Hurst won’t be a good pro (too many smart people think he will be), but maybe either Atlanta likes someone else, or they just aren’t on the Hurst bandwagon.

So, y’know, don’t bank on this one happening. I’ll eat a hearty serving of these words with a slice of humble pie if this ends up being the pick (and will also be elated, since this would be my choice).

The Falcons rarely pick anyone they haven’t met with and worked out.

TD and Quinn confirmed in the presser yesterday they won’t be picking anyone in at least the first four rounds they haven’t met with.

Just sayin.

Too much being made of official meetings. Wouldn’t surprise me at all to see us draft Hurst if Bryan and Payne are gone. We drafted two guys last year who weren’t on anyone’s radar.

In the 5th round, though.

Not gonna happen in the 1st.  No way.

My experience is stating absolutes eventually comes back and bites you in the azz, never more so then in predicting how a team’s draft will  play out.

So, we'll both be LMAO together then if Quinn/TD pull a fast one on you and drafts Hurst. :)

Falcoholic really needs to do better research. We actually did talk to Saubert. @Vandy can verify because I nailed the pick of Saubert in rd 5 based on him listed as a prospect we were interested in.

Ditto with Kazee. And I don’t remember for sure but I could have sworn we were linked with Collins from a scouting perspective as well.

i get he needs clicks, but come on...during the DQ/TD years less mystery picks have occurred

Back to topic. I just don’t see Hurst as this great DT. If you want a comparison it’s not Grady (Grady was bull strong), certainly isn’t Donald. Maybe Jordan Hill and best case Babs—who I still think never became a great interior pass rusher.

throw in medical issues like the rumored heart issues...I’ll pass

Youre right, Saubert made a top 30 visit to the Falcons last year.

They worked out Kazee and Collins also... it just wasnt reported until after the draft -therefore they could very well be interested in Hurst.

Folks put too much into pre-draft interest. We only know a fraction of what the team is doing. There wasnt a lot linking Takk to the Falcons last year... most thought it was going to be Forrest Lamp, Charles Harris or Jordan Willis based on pre draft interest.

All true. I just hate irresponsible journalism. Stretching the truth, or outright BS to make your point.

i thought Willis might be ours as well.

Rant over.:)

you like Hurst? I can’t warm to him tbh

I like him but there are several DTs i like for the Falcons so I wont be upset if we go another position in the 1st.

I’m there, as well. We know that we’ll draft at least one DT. But I don’t think it has to be first round. Vea is easily the best but he’ll go way early.

My bad, you are exactly right. I remember you telling me about Saubert being linked to falcons. I stand corrected.

I’m not advocating Hurst, I even like Harrison Phillips more than him (and falcons have been linked to Phillips).....but how does anyone in here or media know for sure that we haven’t met with him?  if our scouts are worth 2 cents, they know as much about hurst as you could gather in an interview. This may be a trickier draft  than many on DT, with a lot of teams needing a 1st round talent at that position.  If falcons were enamored with hurst....which again, I’m not saying they are....Stands to reason falcons not advertising to other NFL teams who they are most interested in. Look at what happened to cowboys last year, that data allowed falcons to jump them and get Takk because our intel told us they were grabbing him.

Spot on. Much more complex and secretive than what we think.

Nobody really has a clue what browns are gonna do with the very 1st pick...yet folks think they can connect the dots on the 26th pick based on some meetings and/or interviews?

Ah. Didn’t notice the asterisk on the site.

* Measurement from source other than the NFL Combine

I am guessing they were taken from his Pro Day.
