What we need is a pool full of sharks with lasers on their heads at every entrance.  Duh!

Why don't we just start making EVERYTHING out of Kevlar?  Kevlar lunchboxes.  Kevlar robots that teach math.  Kevlar t-shirts.  Kevlar MAGA hats.  Or maybe we could just give every single child in America a tank.  We wouldn't need to build schools.  We could just have them park their tanks in a field and get lectured by a teacher with a megaphone in a helicopter.

More on Parkland.

Broward County Deputy Scott Peterson, knew where the shooting was happening.  The Broward County Sheriffs department policy is to engage active shooters, yet Peterson told other officers not to approach the building.  The degree of failure of law enforcement in this situation is catastrophic.  If we are to address this problem, we have to accept responsibility.  From he FBI, down to the first officer on the scene,  Parkland High School was let down.  There is a paramedic who has been quoted saying that the sheriffs department prevented him from entering the school.  Those early minutes are life and death in a shooting.  This entire Sheriffs office needs to be taken to task.  The media is too busy attacking NRA members who had nothing to do with this shooting.

BSO releases timeline of events, audio dispatch from Parkland school shooting

Law enforcement didn't enter building until after Nikolas Cruz had left

Peterson can be heard giving orders not to enter the building, six minutes after the first shot was fired.

"Do not approach the 12 or 1300 building," he said. "Stay at least 500 feet away at this point."

Why even have school buildings?

We have the technology to conduct classes online. Structure the course load to suit your parenting needs.

It's really astounding.  It's a "how to" manual on how not to respond to a mass shooting event.

Tragic, sad, disgusting, and one might ask, why hasn't that deputy Sheriff Israel, either been forced to resign or fired?

We could do what Connecticut did and ban "assault weapons" after the 1993 model, which is basically what's before Congress right now.  That way people could still buy this (from the FB page of a Connecticut gun shop, this is a customer who recently purchased this rifle):

It even still looks scary, so I'm not exactly sure what CT accomplished, but man, I bet they all feel a lot safer now.

It hasn't been specified which rifle was used, but I know you love that 'scary looking guns' trope so whatevs.

"Trope" is a cute way to say "something that is literal and true."  Perhaps you should find another word.

I showed you a dude who bought that rifle in Connecticut, from a Connecticut gun store, after they "banned assault weapons."  How did he do that?  Well, that gun is not classified as a "rifle."  It's classified as "other."  It's very similar to what they did after the 1994 ban, as I said above.  After that ban, they still sold AR15s and AKMs and all manner of other "banned" guns.  They just sawed off the bayonet lug and the flash hider, which did nothing whatsoever to alter the function of the rifle, and they kept right on producing them.

The current ban, HR 5087, does exactly the same thing.

"(36) The term ‘semiautomatic assault weapon’ means any of the following, regardless of country of manufacture or caliber of ammunition accepted:

(A) A semiautomatic rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any one of the following:

(i) A pistol grip.

(ii) A forward grip.

(iii) A folding, telescoping, or detachable stock.

(iv) A grenade launcher or rocket launcher.

(v) A barrel shroud.

(vi) A threaded barrel."

Okay.  So they put a thumbhole stock on it without a forward grip, pin the stock (like they do in California right now), make sure there's no barrel shroud (deadly things that they are), and no threaded barrel, and be sure not to have a grenade launcher or rocket launcher on it, because we know how prolific those are in the sporting community.  Bingo!  Not an "assault weapon" any more.

So what exactly is being accomplished?  They're making the guns less scary looking.  And literally not one thing else.  Pre-ban gun on top, post-ban gun on bottom:

main-qimg-6bb1d7a8de3264f7b21e063744fb01

Same mother effing gun.  Still relatively scary looking, but it doesn't have that rapid fire muzzle brake or that high capacity bayonet lug on it, so......

Then there's the issue of grandfathering.  If we assume they'll pass this bill through both houses of Congress (they won't because Republicans aren't suicidal and a lot of Democrats aren't either), and if we assume Trump will sign it (ditto), it will absolutely have a grandfather clause.  Why?  Because nobody in Washington wants to be on the side of gun confiscation.  Well, not nobody, but nobody outside the coastal areas and inner cities, which is most Congressmen.  Even in liberal areas like Minnesota or Colorado, they aren't going to have the government come round up law abiding citizens' guns.  And so every AR15 currently in production, which is a lot, and every USGI surplus magazine, every Magpul magazine, every Glock and Sig and Beretta magazine, will be sold to civilians.  Just like last time.  And the smarter companies will ramp up production and increase prices to reflect increased demand for pre-ban magazines, which means you'll be enriching the very gun companies the supporters of this bill despise.

But to your first point, yes, it hasn't been specified which gun was used.  The guy @mdrake34 mentioned who shot up the restaurant outside Columbus used a .22 rimfire rifle.  And nobody is talking about banning those.

Perhaps there's a better solution.  But if there is, it hasn't been proposed by anyone complaining about the proliferation of guns.

The second victim died tonight, the family had to remove him from life support. He was the uncle of my wife's cousin's husband.

It's heartbreaking. He was the brother of my wife's cousin's husband's dad - the dad passed away fro, cancer a few years ago. He was a great man, he was a singer in a band. So now both of them are in heaven together.

Out of curiosity, who are we supposed to arm now after the retirement home hostage situation and shootings yesterday? Is the solution to make those buildings massacre proof, too?

"We"? No One. People are responsible (or not) for themselves.

Buildings are not massacred. Disarmed, law-abiding people are massacred by unlawful, armed (including knives, hatchets, hammers) people in predominantly "Gun-Free" zones.

As long as people live and have free-will violent crime will persist. There is no solution. The solution for self-defense and making the business of violent crime impractical is to fight back, the means by which to do so is to be personally armed and trained to do so, and taking personal responsibility instead of inhibiting other victim's ability to do so while insisting "we" do something.

You are on your own. No one is coming to save you. It is all your responsibility. Anything else is pretending.

lol

Such a childish and fearmongering mindset.

People have been fighting fire with fire when it comes to violent crime since time immemorial yet it's still around. Guards and cops are armed in gun free zones yet incidents continue to happen. People who are armed are robbed and/or killed anyway. Maybe fighting fire with fire doesn't work, eh?
