GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Fresh off National Signing Day, coach Dan Mullen made his first public appearance in front of the fans themselves, hosting an hour-long chat with fans, season ticket holders, Alumni Association members and members of Gator Boosters.

It didn't take him long to draw some loud applause from the fans.

Just one question into the Q&A portion of of the program -- OK, the first guy who got the mic to ask a question asked three questions, technically -- he was faced with the question on many Florida fans' minds on Wednesday.

How will Florida keep up with Georgia, which posted a historic No. 1 recruiting class just weeks after playing for the national championship?

"Listen, winning one SEC Championship Game doesn't make you a dominant program, you know what I'm saying?" Mullen said with a laugh. "In two of the last three years, we've been to the SEC Championship Game. So even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while."

As the fans roared with applause and laughter, Mullen continued on, light-hearted and enjoying himself.

The fans ate up his every word, many of which focused on embracing the expectations at Florida to win the kind of championships Georgia did in Atlanta... and the ones it lost.

There's no backing down now.

Florida has to close the gap on Georgia, and Mullen is certainly exuding the kind of confidence it will take -- both from him and his team -- to ensure Florida remains the dominant team a series it has won 21 of the last 28 in.

I mean, a blind squirrel doesn’t beat UT and UF 83-7.  Plus he’s fight for second place with USC. He needs to worry about them first.

yeah you don't dominate like we did and end up one play from winning it all and it's explained away with a quip about a blind squirrel.  we won the sec, rose bowl game, and fought like heck in the title game.. mullen needs to worry about trying hard to finish in 3rd place because usce has passed him by.

Georgia is the new bully on the block and Florida has proud tradition - Mullen at UF and Pruitt at UT are gonna take their shots at UGA because they are trying to make Georgia smaller than it is right now - both those head coaches know their programs are waaay behind the Dawgs....any shot they take is done so trying to elevate their program and fire up their fanbase - the problem is that "talk" doesn't do anything for ya on the field.     Mullen trying to punch up to make people think of Steve Spurrier - but Spurrier punched down - after he beat you.

That is awesome! How many times did Mullen's blind squirrel find a nut while at Miss St? Can you actually throw shade using your failure to win the title the previous two years?

As much as I loved that beat down, I can’t wait for this game to be relevant again. It’s so much sweeter to keep them from winning the division and playing for more. As much as that 2012 loss to Bama stung, it was still sweet that our win over UF kept them out. And then they lost to Louisville in the Sugar Bowl. :D
