References in MLA format, please...

Haha. I'm out at a conference this week so keeping posts shorter than usual and not proofed. Meant to say referenced, as in it was proposed as a potential rule change, but never saw any confirmation that the back counting update was passed. Just was curious if there was a link. Have seen a lot accepting that it is the case but then articles referencing conversations with coaches this season still discussing back counting for these 2018 class.

Bama mods love to pump sunshine to that fanbase. You gotta be careful with listening to what they say.

See the post I quoted above. Did a better job of saying what I tried to quickly post from my phone. Wasn't trying to indicate that they felt the Juco was necessarily better... Just that that's where their primary focus is now.. thus the either way piece.

Can you link to this Carter? I've seen it references but no official update eliminating it and reports referencing back counting for the upcoming class still.

http://www.ncaa.com/news/football/article/2017-04-14/college-football-di-council-adopts-new-recruiting-model

Football Bowl Subdivision schools are limited to signing 25 prospective and current student-athletes to a first-time financial aid agreement or a National Letter of Intent. Exceptions exclude current student-athletes who have been enrolled full-time at the school for at least two years and prospective or current student-athletes who suffer an incapacitating injury (effective for recruits who sign after Aug. 1, 2017).”

It doesn’t specifically mention back counting here but this has been asked many times on the Rivals board and the staffers have always confirmed that there is no more back counting.

Wow!  I was not aware of this.  It will be interesting to see how the hard 25 cap and the early signing period impact college football.  Talent evaluation and development is going to be even more important.

I feel like eliminating back counting is actually detrimental to the athlete. It will reward schools that limit opportunities for young athletes to shine (fewer early draft entrants) and then boot non high performers as needed to remain under the 85 limit. I understand the fight against true oversigning but don't feel like this impacts that in a meaningfully positive way.

It makes roster management extremely important with 85 scholarships when you are limited to 100 signees in a 4 year period and the average rate of attrition beyond graduations is around 8 per year. I think we can expect a lot more guys to take redshirts. It’s going to be a challenge to have a full 85 man roster, I don’t see coaches running anyone off like we saw with certain schools signing close to 30 or more every year.

Which makes it IMPERATIVE that a program gets its personnel base group set correctly, with legitimate talent that can play and/or contribute meaningfully as they mature, in Year One of this new scholarship situation.  Which makes me think UGA is going to get the very best 25 they can sign and cut/refuse committments as necessary.

@youngbloodz there seems to be some confidence growing with Campbell to UGA. Trent Smallwood actually put him in his predicted class recently. You hearing anything new?

Nothing new. His uncle said everyone in his family wants him to go to Miami but ultimately it will be his decision. He got hurt Friday night and that's why he wasn't able to make it to UGA. Steve Wiltfong put his CB in for Tyson about a month ago I believe. I will be shocked if Tyson doesnt go to Miami.

I’m expecting Miami but I guess you never know. I still remember the look on Landon Collins mom’s face.

With Cade Mays officially decomitting and a CB on him to UGA, the UT fanbase has gone looney:

From UTjr board:

I do not wish him the best. I hope he fails miserably at football. I guess there is no honor among thieves. Please stop using God as a shield to guard you from the ramifications. You have lied and hidden the truth for months, so apparently this has been brewing since before this season. I can promise you one thing, if my son is blessed enough to be good at football he will have exactly one choice, period. I’m over these egotistical spoiled kids. UT and its football tradition have likely done well by this family, and this is what the program gets back. Pretty sad."

i wonder how quickly his tune changes if CM recommits once the new coach is announced.

It is actually quite sad that the decision of a minor, someone still in high school, could evoke such a visceral response from an adult.

But Mays loves the University of Tennessee.  He is a legacy.  All things being equal he 100% enrolls at UT.  It’s similar to Peyton Manning when he opted to enroll at UT because the Univ of Miss was a dumpster fire about to go on probation...the Butch Jones conundrum is a concern for these kids.  I wonder if this lady yelled at Peyton for spurning Archie’s school?  Or does the logic only apply when it’s Tennessee losing out on an in-State   5 star recruit.

There's already reports that Jones isn't getting fired. I'd say the decision of the Program Coordinator to leave rather than wait spells it out that at very least he didn't think Jones was getting fired, or at very least he wasn't willing to wait any longer.

If Jones isn't fired then the Boosters should push to fire everyone above him who makes these decisions.

Lied and hidden the truth?

The kid has literally grown up around the program and was committed for years. By all indications this has been a tremendously difficult decision for him.

This person simply has no grace and no class. Cade handled it exactly how a decommitment should be handled. He let the coaches know he was going to look around, took a couple visits and decommitted. Three months before signing day. This person should be more upset with Butch Jones for sucking and the UT athletic director for allowing this dark cloud to linger.

yep jones is going to get another year.. they don't want to pay over 10 million for his buyout.

Well, guess CM could very well be a Dawg then.  Foolish decision by UT.  I guess Jones would not go quietly like Mac...lol

There has to be an extremely wealthy booster in Nashville or Memphis who would gladly hand Jones $10,000,000 to get steppin so the program can reset.  Good news for the Dawgs!!!
