Explaining why the stadium looked half empty.....

Recommended Posts

First off there was a lot of packers fans as I was walking around outside. but once inside we had them outnumbered a good 20:1. Our fans do not know where to tailgate at (and I plan on changing that, and will bump my thread later on getting a march together).

Anyhow stadium started to look half empty at halftime and continued that way. But what is taking place there is so much to do. So there might be 40,000 in their seats but the other 30,000 are walking around checking out all the cool things. It is like Disney World in there. You have where you can pour beer yourself from the wall, 100 yard bar, food is cheap, seating areas to eat and be able to view the game in a great spot, play shuffle board while watching the game, etc etc.

So Falcon fans were there and the stadium is packed. but we might not all be in our seats, but we are inside the Benz, but we might be viewing it from a different spot and checking other things out.

I was at the game last night, and it was nice to see that unlike previous years the Packer fans were only there in limited number.  In the past you would see huge clumps of yellow/green seats, but very sparse this year.

Also, there's so much room around the stadium where you can see the field and not be in your seat that I'm afraid the look of a partially filled stadium, although it's actually full, may be the norm.

I imagine that this will be the case for this season, and once people settle into the stadium though.  I'm wondering how long Blank can keep prices that low, because it has to be costing him or someone a lot of money.

Remember when he first took it over? Process started cheap forever. And I believe he is always the cheapest place to visit.

So I do not see him reading prices. Specially with us visiting these food places and paying.

Yeah, I'm an economics guy and I just wonder what's offsetting the cost.  Ultimately it's great for fans either way.

Maybe he found a creative way to make it happen.  He's a great businessman.

The main items people buying are high profit items(pizza, popcorn, hot dogs and drinks). I have never purchased food/beer at any event before outside of a soda. Between the Sat and Sun games for the wife and I we bought 4 souvenir cups, 2 beers, 2 pizzas, and popcorn.

I had a shredded beef soft taco and it was garbage. So I guess the food is actually cheap.

That could be a number of factors.  I was a grill op at waffle house.  Sometimes its ingredients, sometimes its who prepares it, and sometimes its just the rush.

How were the lines for food?  In the dome at halftime it was impossible to move around, and MB was supposed to improve that.

Right, but what usually drives prices uo is lot rent.  Usually businesses pay a hefty premium for space at stadiums.

Well I went to MBS during the first preseason game so its not out of the question they may have been ill prepared and inexperienced with the bulk of orders they had. I'm sure it will improve over time and I really hope they're not using the cheapest bulk product you can buy.

I think they're going for volume over margin.  With the slightly more affordable prices and bar-type areas with tv's I think they're expecting more people to pregame there as well as just eat at the stadium rather than filling up beforehand.

In the past I saw it as him as not being greedy and instead let people pack it out to sell other things. Which makes you more money.

Let's say average ticket is 150$. So that means 70,000 fans every game since it's cheap. Making it 10.5 million. And beer you make 50% profit, drinks you make 50% profit, food at the cheap places make barely anything. So to make it easy let's say average person makes another 10$ profit at a minimum...... But then you have restraunts buying places in there, you have Benz spending mad money, you have PSL owners paying a ton. There is probably 100 restraunts in there.

So just from a football game. He is going to make 15 million from fans. Average rental for the rose bowl is 3-15 thousand a game. And these places are having 20+ soccer, 10-12 football games, concerts, basketball, etc etc. So it comes close too 100 events. Meaning average rental cost is probably half a million to 1.5 million.. And there being 100 places to eat you are now banking big time. Even if it's only half that you are still banking.

So with not including the other typical stuff everyone else gets in other stadiums. They sell their tickets for twice as much, which brings you to 20 million plus for an event. But no one is paying for food. Which means restaurants are not that much into renting a space there. And we all know those expensive ticket places have to have a good football team.

Thanks for the insight MASH.  Hopefully the "newness" will wear off some going down the stretch.

I'll let you know when it makes me feel like I'm only attending to be in my seat. But I don't see that for a long time.

Watch what it looks like for the Superbowl next year. It's going to have seats look empty sometimes.

And it's not like things take long. It's just you go grab a beer, hot dog, etc. And then your like, oh what's that? I want to do that and that and that.

Also the bathrooms are not a standing pit anymore. There is so many restrooms and so many stalls.

So to say people are enjoying what's around and not being stuck in traffic.

Been season ticket holder for 15 years along with my buddy. We ate more food in the stadium last night than we have in the last 10 years if you exclude Bottomless popcorn.  They make money selling a $2 hotdog and $2 soda, believe that.

When they were $6, I went years without buying. My buddy ate four hotdogs last night and I had two. They would have never gotten ANY of that $12 last year, so this is genius, not losing a dime...
