Carter
We are now in the first month of football season, folks!! This promises to be another wild season in the SEC. I will give my little rundown here of the conference and then post a form to copy and paste our predictions. Let's get this thing rolling... Starting in the West, Alabama has lost a ton of big time players again, but the SEC in general still sets up as "Bama and everyone else." The Tide are picked to win the West and win the conference for a FOURTH consecutive year. LSU is looming, dangerous as ever, with a new coaching staff and loads of prime talent. Auburn is once again a popular pick to possibly dethrone the Tide. Gus Malzahn's seat is on fire and he will be relying on the hype of another new QB in stud Baylor transfer Jarrett Stidham to get the offense on track. Then there is the dark horse Mississippi State with their outstanding QB Nick Fitzgerald primed for a big season in Dan Mullen's offense. Texas A&M is highly talented and explosive offensively, but it's the defense that everyone will be looking at in John Chavis's third season coordinating for the Aggies. Arkansas has yet to make the big splash with Bielema as head coach; many speculate that his seat has to be getting hot, but Arkansas has flat out denied it. Ole Miss is a complete mess right now. Embroiled in controversy, Hugh Freeze resigned at the point of termination after former coach Houston Nutt turned the athletic department upside down with legal action to clear his name when Ole Miss publicly commented that the NCAA sanctions all stemmed from violations during his tenure. It is unknown at this point what actions the NCAA will take against Ole Miss. There are scenarios which could lead to several players being eligible to transfer and play immediately, but this is not expected to take place until after the season. Ole Miss is a very talented team and would be a dangerous matchup, when healthy, for anyone in the country. However, with the dark cloud of uncertainty and controversy hanging over the program and the staff in disarray, it is hard to imagine they will field a winning team. Moving to the East, we have a trio of teams (Georgia, South Carolina, Missouri) moving into year 2 with new coaching staffs. Georgia once again finds itself as the media pick to win the division after narrowly edging Florida in the media picks. The Dawgs had a very mediocre season in 2016, when Kirby Smart fielded his first team ever as a head coach with a highly touted true freshman QB in Jacob Eason. Will UGA see the 2nd year jump that commonly occurs after a coaching change? They are counting on a defense that returns 10 starters from a unit that was good but not great (and abysmal in red zone efficiency) in 2016. Georgia seeks to unseat Florida as the defending division champions. The Gators are replacing some highly productive players on defense and face uncertainty at the QB position with Notre Dame backup Malik Zaire transferring in to battle Luke Del Rio and Feleipe Franks. UF has not recruited up to their expectations since head coach Jim McElwain took the job, so it will be interesting to see how the Gators follow up their two consecutive years of winning the division. Tennessee is coming off what can only be described as a disappointing 2016 season. The stars had aligned for Butch Jones to take the Vols back to the top of college football, but a series of injuries and questionable coaching decision derailed the would-be championship season. Now many speculate that Jones could soon be out of a job in Knoxville. The Vols said goodbye to a ton of talent from last year's team and now set out to replace QB Joshua Dobbs and a lot of big impact players on defense. Jones has recruited fairly well so UT should be a tough team, but expectations are markedly lower in 2017 and questions abound regarding Jones's ability to field a champion. South Carolina, Vandy, Missouri, and Kentucky all seem to be making strides toward improvement but have yet to really make a splash. South Carolina probably has the biggest buzz of these 4 teams under head coach Will Muschamp as he looks to improve a defense that played pretty tough until they ran into the Clemson buzzsaw. The Gamecocks will be relying on sophomore QB Jake Bentley to come up big after a promising freshman season. The SEC East could be up for grabs and South Carolina may be a dark horse to take advantage if Georgia and Florida have disappointing seasons. Carter
Well I was wrong about LSU. I’m usually too high on them. Auburn and Texas A&M are better than I expected. Miss State a little worse than I expected. Other than UGA the East just sucks.
