February Hawks Thread

Dwight Howard may put up good defensive stats but it doesn't change the FACT that NO ONE on the team has the physical tools to play good defense without the helping defense of Al Horford. This defense has been TRASH since opposing teams made adjustments to their offensive PNR scheme and made it harder for Howard to just stay near the basket.

Atlanta's Drtg since 11/18/16 (where the league figured them out): 108.9
Celtics Drtg doesn't matter as Thomas is absolutely garbage defensively but it's not much worse on the SEASON than this.

Would be waaayyyyyyy better with big Al.

Ours matters and theirs doesn't? As I said before, your reasoning is sad.. least you could do is resume using your screen name so everyone can see all the other "brilliant analysis" you spew so they know to take everything you say with a grain of salt.. or, you know, choose to ignore

Just wait man, just wait. You're going to understand what I'm talking about when the Hawks are blown out by 20-25 the next few times they play Boston and Dwight's lumbering, IDIOTIC self plays a major part in it because he is a DISASTER against 5 out offenses on defense. Boston will stomp Atlanta every single time they play them when Dwight is in because of how AWFUL Dwight is against the 5 out.

Dwight Howard was awesome....before 2012.

He sucks now. His attitude is horrible, he doesn't bother with hustling, and he pouts if he doesn't pile up the boards. He has HOF talent but after his back injury he was never able to fine tune his game to fit a less athletic version of himself.

Right now, Dwight Howard is a stats guy.

Dude what the Hawks are going through right now doesn't involve one player. This team has alot of different pieces and team chemistry is still a work in progress.

Agreed.. but we're probably not talking about that aspect if the foul call is made at the end..

as bbd35 among others has been saying, d has got to get better.. all about getting hot at the right time

Yeah I agree. Thabo being back will help a lot. I thought Collison's speed was a problem all night on Friday.

This is a young team, and they will contend for the playoffs. I would LOVE if Gordon Hayward could find his way to Atlanta next year.

Mike Budenholzer closes the door on Paul Millsap trade rumors

by Brad Rowland@BTRowland Feb 13, 2017, 2:49pm EST

Peachtree Hoops

The Atlanta Hawks have been embroiled in rumors concerning Paul Millsap for quite some time and, with the 2017 trade deadline rapidly approaching, the theoretical hot stove is beginning to heat up across the league. However, head coach Mike Budenholzer effectively ended any speculation surrounding Millsap on Monday afternoon.

Chris Vivlamore of the AJC brings word that Millsap will not be traded and this is as direct as Budenholzer can possibly be on the subject. It should be noted that nothing is “official” until the deadline passes next week, but anything short of standing pat with the All-Star power forward would be widely panned based on the blunt statement above.

Paul Millsap was reportedly told weeks ago that he would not be dealt, but hearing it from the final decision maker is another layer altogether. The final result for players like Thabo Sefolosha, Tim Hardaway Jr. and others involved in rumors remains to be seen but Millsap chatter at this point would seem frivolous.

Stay tuned.

Tuesday's Hawks News: Schroder, Hardaway Jr. shine in win over Blazers

ESPN.com

ESPN.com | 4:12 AM ET

How the Hawks pulled out another improbable victory: Add this to the list of improbable Hawks’ wins this season. The Hawks scored the final 12 points of the game with eight coming from the free-throw line. The only baskets came from Dennis Schroder and Kent Bazemore. -- The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Hawks use 12-0 run to end overtime in win over Blazers: The Hawks are still undefeated in overtimes this season. It wasn’t easy. The Hawks erased a seven-point deficit in the extra period en route to a 105-104 win over the Trail Blazers in a nationally televised game Monday night at Moda Center. -- The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Sefolosha misses eighth straight game: Thabo Sefolosha will miss his eighth straight game with a left groin injury as the starting forward will not be able to play Monday at the Trail Blazers. Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer still remains optimistic that Sefolosha could play Wednesday at the Clippers before the All-Star break. However, the team will monitor Sefolosha in the next two days and consider the additional extended break. -- The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Budenholzer on Millsap: ‘He’s not going anywhere’: Continued speculation about the future of Paul Millsap with the NBA trade deadline looming ended with a few words. “He’s not going anywhere,” said Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer, who also serves as president of basketball operations, to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Monday. “You can write that." -- The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Which is easier for an NBA team? Is it....

Building a team that has to have:

3 elite athletes that are good scorers and don't need help defensively to play good defense.

An elite PG pick and roll defender that doesn't need help from a center to look good.

A stretch 4 that has the passing abilities of Millsap and a 38-40% three point shooter.

Just so you can help cover for the flaws of your center, despite him being an excellent boarder.

Or...

Having a mobile, unselfish center that can help cover for a lot of flaws.

Mobile unselfish "center" that can help cover a lot of flaws?

7 points on 3-10 shooting, 1-5 from 3, 2 rebounds!, 3 assists in a LOSS to Chicago

definitely worth that max contract he wanted.....

ps Chicago out rebounded them by 20.. second chance opportunities matter "in today's NBA"

i have a hard time respecting anyone who's heart only beats to spread negative thinking.. if you don't have something to believe in, then you've lost sight of what being a fan entitles you to..
