TonyMartin80
How would the Falcons offense match up against the 85 Bears defense. Lets say all players are healthy. The game takes place in Georgia Dome. And the rules are a happy medium between 85 and 2016. I think Falcons could beat them at home in Dome but not likely in cold Chicago. I think Tevin Coleman would be key to victory.
TheFatboi
We could beat them in atl or chi and the reason is the blueprint to beating that vaunted 46 defense is to spread it out. That type of football is right up our ally. The only loss they had that year was to Dan Marino and miami and what did they do? Spread them out and make them defend the whole field. kiwifalcon
Different era different rules. Its like comparing the whole Bird Magic Jordon LeBron era's b/ball. The games players and rules change and that era adapts.Just don't like comparing different era's.
youngbloodz
The Browns would score 30 points on the 85 Bears in today's NFL.

MAD597
We are putting up 30+ points on the top defenses today, We'd put up 40 on that defense.
Kaptain Krazy
I think the better thought experiment is... 2016 ATL Offense vs Marvel's Avengers How would Alex Mack and the Falcons' OL handle Hulk and Thor? Matt Ryan vs Captain America, Julio Jones vs Iron Man? Intriguing matchups.
ShmevinShmarris
Honestly half of the league would do well against the 85 Bears. The passing game is so evolved nowadays it wouldnt be close. Great players but they were so dependent on the 46 defense.
droopy1592
The Bears 46 D today would get roasted alive by a top tier NFL offense, especially ours.
TonyMartin80
What receivers do you guys think would torch the 85 Bears? Julio or sanu or tevco or tamme or gabriel or freeman.

TheUsualStuff
The fatboi laid it out.The blueprint to beating that defense is to spread it out wide. That was discovered even before rules changes favoring offenses. This is why no one runs it any more. It was designed to work against 2 back, 2 WR formations that utilized a lot of play action to make the deep passing game work. Today's spread 3 and 4 wide formations and our skill guys who can catch coming out of the backfield would tear it up. We drop 38 on the 85 Bears. The game evolves. Teams figure things out. The dolphins laid the blueprint to beat them and after that season more teams starting using that approach and shortly after the end of the 46 defense. What we run with the 4-3 under is a cousin if the 46 but we can still cover out of it.
RetiredFalconFan48
I think the better question is would we beat the bears playing with their rules. Yes we're more athletic and would spread them out; but they were super disciplined, physical and mentally stronger than today's cry babies IMHO. And I'm sure the reason Miami was their only loss was because they adjusted after them. ( And no, the Browns of today would get embarrassed - RG3 would be RG-OBSELETE). This is coming from a young buck: We'd see a lot of alligator arms attempting catches and turnovers would dictate a close game. And they could very well win because today's pass oriented defenses struggle against the run which would open a killer play action (see ATL 2016). Jesus
Sweetness would have a big day against our D. They would power run Payton, then play action to Gault over the top. Though back then no one ever saw the speed our D has.
jm_falcons
They would probably hold there own against that Bears D. But what about the 1977 Falcons defense? That group was notorious for putting players in the hospital. They gave up the fewest ppg of any modern era football team ever. They were vicious...a mere 129 pts allowed over a 14 game season. They were very very tough to score on.

The 85 bears weren't a defense suited to beat a spread offense. That's the weakness of the 46. Miami spread them out and beat them.

PeytonMannings Forehead
2016 Falcons offense vs. the 2013 Seahawks defense -- forced 39 turnovers, 28 interceptions ... gave up only 172 yards passing a game! Think about that. This era and they only surrendered 1-7-2 a game in the air... or 2016 Falcons offense vs. 2008 Steelers defense -- one of the great forgotten defenses of the past ten years. It's almost criminal how they get overlooked. Finished #1 vs. the pass, #1 vs. the run, #1 in points. 51 sacks. Held every offense they played to under 300 total yards except one -- the Titans who were the #1 seed that year.

That defense was just nasty... and their fans are going to milk 48 until the end of time.
