Defense is about all 11 players playing together, give it a little more time

The defense has so many new pieces on it, many rookies as Campbell, Jones and UDFA rookie Poole not to mention a bunch of other new players or players in different positions, and now Neal coming back, this is a work in progress. A stud defense is a defense that plays together, they just need some more time together and they should tighten up, perhaps tighten up a lot.

We just need our offense to carry the team until the defense can mitigate the costly penalties and mistakes  and start to all get on the same page. I like the individual pieces and see some good talent, it's just got to come together over the next few games.

It's natural to assume we have the right pieces. But this takes time. Chicago, Jacksonville, Oakland added buckets of talent to their defenses. How's it looking? I think we've refused to bid up one special player because of a real need for talent. And I think that even with the turn over and some promising rookies, that we aren't there yet.

But it's fun. I like DQ and I believe he knows what he's doing and that his coaches know talent. He needs another year, another free agency and another full draft.

We're going to let some good players go next year.....because we're getting better. He's building a core. I'm very curious to see if he'll consider a true 3-4, because ironically we would have a monster group of backers and safeties for that D.

I hate some of the defensive calls...

Like the TD Carr threw on 4th down...the previous 3 downs we rushed 4, played cover 3, and kept everybody on lock. Then we man up and blitz on 4th down and get burnt on a rub play, that should've been executed better but dag...why not go with what works?

I know. I scratch my head at some things. But he's so new at this. Not going for the end zone on a 3rd and 17. Not setting his groups yet. That 4th down call. But what I'm liking is how he's the spokesman for a billion dollar business, his relentless energy, his deep discretion for the players. We'll see. But it was a game that had me crazy and it was a blast.

My hopes were that the defense would pull together around week 6-8...given that Neal and Collins would miss time.  Poole and Ish are holding it down.

The penalties and missed tackles need to and can be cleaned up...Alford got a bad call IMHO.  Watch how the defensive stats shoot up if they do.

The "O" should and has led the team...Mack was the best acquisition on either side of the ball.

It generally takes the defense 3-4 games to gel, especially with all the youth.  I like what I see. I'm excited about all of our rookies and definitely think the defense is on the right track.

Not to mention the injuries and the fact that there's no way anyone is conditioned to play 4 quarters at this point...

No, at this rate their is probably going to be a dozen individual players that have more sacks than we do as a team. This is not the time for happy fairy tales and prancing through fields of flowers hoping things start to gel.

Lack of pass rush has been an issue here for more than a decade. Even when Abe was here he was our only consistent pass rusher we never could draft or sign any player to play on the opposite side to complement him. Now we just signed a HOF pass rusher and he has all but disappeared on the field. It is clear we have a SEVERE coaching issue and a real lack of ability to acquire the proper talent in the area of pass rushing. This issue seems to go all the way up to Mckay as far as a history of problematic pass rushing with this franchise.

We need to scrap our current DL coaches and hire the best specialists money can buy to not only teach pass rushing but also get the best scouts that have been proven to spot NFL break through pass rushers.

This is panic time, this is bad, we simply can't get sacks, and year after year the issue is only getting worse. This issue has been a major issue for a decade it is time to throw every available resource at it so this problem is fixed.

Agreed. Have felt this way all along. And add to that the problem of stupid penalties that have kept opponents on the field and have resulted in them putting points on the board. Gotta get this stuff fixed.

You like the sorry pass rush? We'll be lucky to end the season with 19 at the rate things are going.

I think one of the problems is we always want to go finesse on the DL. WE need some gigantic fat guys to rotate and be a pseudo NT for us. EVERY time we go in a 330 LB fat monster to play on the DL it paid off but we tend to only keep them a year or so then cast them aside. I want 2 330 + LB fat monsters to rotate at NT please and collapse the pocket from the inside.

Also get Chuck Smith signed as a full time pass rushing coach.

With games coming up against Carolina, Denver, and Seattle, leaning on the offense is a tall order. The D has to get it together

Carolina has a big play offense that can wreck havoc. Denver and Seattle do not. I think we can hang with either one of them as long as our run game steps up. Seattle can't score. The big problem is both games on the road.

These defenses just don't seem to be as good as they were in past seasons. We know that we can either beat Carolina or get embarrassed by them.  Denver lost a lot of pieces on from last year's defense and have given up 20 points in both games so far this season.  Seattle just isn't the same.  They have no running game and the defense is iffy at best.

I'm with Gazoo here, defense takes time to gel.  Look at last year, the first 5 games we leaned on the offense and got decent play from the defense.  The last 11 games the defense was playing pretty good and the offense couldn't put it together.  I actually think that if we come out of these first 6 games (statistically the hardest in the league) at 3-3, we could have a great season ahead of us.  If we come out any better than .500 we should be a team to reckon with.

They should'a got the gelly out during training camp and preseason.  But I'll patiently wait to see what comes of the defense...well hopefully patiently wait, that can be hard as a Falcon fan.

If it weren't for several mistakes/penalties on defense our first game that led directly to 21 points for Tampa, we'd easily be sitting at 2-0 right now.

Im really excited about the prospect of our defense tightening up, starting with the run defense/gap responsibilities which will put teams in more 3rd and longs which ostensibly will help the pass rush.  The signing of Schofield is an interesting one and I expect Freeney and Clayborn to start getting sacks as well.

Both Seattle and Denver defenses will wreck havoc on our offense in their house. Our D has gotta do something in those 2 games

Seattle started off last season 0-2 and their offense looked terrible. Then Wilson ended up having the best season of his career. Don't underestimate that team.

We are starting to see why I didn't put a lot of energy into the "Falcons are doomed with toughest schedule in the NFL" meme that propagated around here during offseason.

We are already seeing that some of these teams have potentially regressed, perhaps even considerably regressed, since last year.

I think Denver is beatable (especially with our offensive 13 Sets being implemented) and Carolina is a division foe who Falcons beat in regular season last year.

I think a lot of minds will change if we take care of business Monday night. We have the offensive personnel to match up against any defense. We can attack the outside with our receivers more with the Saints, and come back playing more 13 with Denver. We have running backs who can sneak up to line of scrimmage and run routes, serval TEs who can block and catch and split the seam, two huge WRs who can make big plays and a couple of deep threats to thro out there in certain situations.
