Dirty Bird Mock Draft v1

Recommended Posts

  • Round 1: Darron Lee OLB - 6'1" 232 lbs.

Everyone knows by now the speed that Lee posseses.  Extremely athletic and rangy player.  Still very new to the position but has shown good instincts and explodes to the ball and on tackles.  Very aggressive player and reminds me a bit of Ryan Shazier.  Fits the mold for the type of LB Quinn wants.  Highly productive in college as well to back up his physical tools.

  • Round 2: Su'a Cravens OLB - 6'1" 226 lbs.

Very much similar to Lee.  Has not played as a LB much, but was very productive doing so.  Former safety so he has the ability to drop in coverage and potentially go out wide.  Another highly aggressive player that will fly to the ball and is a violent hitter.  Plays with great instincts and awareness.  With the addition of Cravens and Lee, our LB core will follow the "fast and physical" ideal with two young studs.

  • Round 3: Karl Joseph SS - 5'10" 205 lbs.

Joseph is another very aggressive and physical player.  Reminds me a bit of Lamarcus Joyner, a player that isn't huge, but flies to the ball and hits violently.  Has great explosion to close on throws as well as tackling offensive players.

  • Round 4: Jihad Ward DE/DT - 6'5" 297 lbs.

A bit of a tweener between DE and DT.  He is very much a project type player who could pay off.  Has not developed good technique yet, but with Quinn I think this could definately improve.  Has great physical tools, but his lack of technique as he was a WR for much his career, led him not to produce much.  Boom or bust player.

  • Round 7: Jordan Walsh OG/C - 6'3" 290 lbs.

Could potentially play either OG or C on the next level.  Has 36 career starts, showing consistency and experience.  Very good technique, but not an overpowering type player.  Shows good mobility in reaching 2nd level.

I like it but would like to get a decent TE somewhere in there. I'm not a huge fan of Cravens I think many want Cravens to be Thompson and I don't see it. Another OG  to look at late that should be a good fit for our scheme is Joe Thuney from NC state also.

I think we can sign a servicable TE in FA.  I would rather build the defense up then draft a TE.  However, I am not opposed to drafting a TE or WR depending on how the 1st and early 2nd rounds of the draft start out.

Cravens is 100% a SS in our system. I like that pick and I like Cravens for us at SS, but then you drafted another SS in the 3rd that could have been another position imo.

I don't see how Cravens can be said to be a 100% SS for us, could you explain your reasoning on that?

Based off your first 3 picks I think it's safe to say you want us to kill opposing offences.

I still have faith that our offense can be productive.  Making the leap to the playoffs and competing against the top tier teams, I believe we need to increase speed and talent on the defensive side.  With this draft, hopefully that happens and we can see more improvements with our defense.

Sorry, that might have come off as an attempt to discredit Cravens. It wasn't. I like Cravens, and he'd make for a solid Will LB in a traditional 4-3 defense. For us though, we desperately need a big, hard hitting, enforcer type SS that is basically just a smaller LB anyway. Cravens fits that mold to a T. I guess technically he could play Will for us but historically Quinn has used his Mike and Will LBs interchangeably, so he'd need to get better at taking on blockers and other aspects of run defense to play Will for us. As a SS though he'd be more focused on covering and beating blocks from TEs rather than covering RBs and beating OL/FB blocks.

You just want us to knock opposing players' helmets off, that's how you wanna win!!! And i like it.

Ok yes this does make sense.  When I saw his weight I was definately a bit shocked because I thought he was a bit bigger than 225.  I feel like he could be a good Dime LB or hybrid LB/S in other situations.

He's very similar in size to Kam Chancellor. I think Chancellor was a bit bigger, actually.

we have definately seen that this is still true. seahawks, broncos, panthers, etc all have the fast and physical defenses.  with our offensive weapons, if we can get an above average defense with several play makers, we could really have great success.

I like what you have done with this and it got me to thinking here is a alternative that does much of what you did here to consider.

1.) Lee

2.) Jonathon Bullard or if you prefer a nose after cutting ours you could go Austin Johnson

3.) Travis Feeney

4) Tyler Higbee

7) Joe Thuney

I really want Sua Cravens!

He's the perfect SS for us. He's even more important than the #17 pick to me. If we can get him in the 2nd I'm excited.

In the 1st I'd like Leonard Floyd over Darron Lee. Not that high on Ragland

I wouldn't mind Floyd over Lee either but, both have the potential to transform a defense if they can learn.
