Allen was an exclusive rights free agent. The 2014 fifth-rounder started 14 games last season after spending the majority of his rookie year on the practice squad. He was a league average starter at free safety. Allen just turned 24 in December.

blackredfellow
More info: http://www.atlantafalcons.com/news/blog/article-1/S-Allen-Tendered-as-Exclusive-Rights-Free-Agent/a80b3ce2-67dd-41f4-868e-79cdb8a81a68 Quote The Falcons have tendered exclusive rights free agent S Ricardo Allen . An exclusive rights free agent is a player whose contract has expired and has three or fewer tenured years in the league. His original team must make a contract offer by the league imposed deadline or the player becomes an unrestricted free agent. No compensation is awarded for losing EFAs. Allen, 5-9, 186 pounds, was selected by the Falcons in the fifth round (147th overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft out of Purdue. He spent the first 15 weeks of the 2014 season as a member of the Falcons practice squad. Last season, Allen received his first major playing time as he started 14 of the 15 games he played in. He recorded 68 total tackles (59 solo), five passes defensed, three interceptions – which was a team high – one sack, and one fumble recovery. Looks like we still have to make him a contract offer. The first article wasn't clear if we had actually made him an offer and he signed.
MoFalconsFan56
I like Allen. I think he's only going to get better
Leggggggo
But, I thought this staff has no clue what they are doing?! They only took a 5th round CB practice squad player from the previous regime and coached him up to be a starting FS in the NFL. Rome wasn't built in a night people... Patience and time... I like the kid, and i'd say last season was a pretty big success considering it was his first at safety.

Beast-N-Da-Sheetz
Good move. He had a good year along with some growing pains, hopefully he continues to get better and become a major factor in Quinn's defense.
AndySG
He was one of my favourite players in the draft that year. I was delighted we got him, but unsure where he would fit. The move to FS looks to be a master stroke and Allen seems to be working his *** off.

dfsutton
I'm super excited that we kept him he's an average starter currently with some upside still to grow into. He's cost effective and won't prevent us from upgrading with someone else if the opportunity presents itself.

Not to be intentionally argumentative (for once, maybe) I feel like the local news actually does have some positive stories...more than the national news. And the funny thing is it actually is pretty boring.
