If we want to win 2017, FA $$$ must be spent here

Recommended Posts

I see a lot of threads started with posters opinions on who they think the Falcons should sign in FA. The majority of threads center around veteran players that are established in the league, and due to this, warrent a large price tag.

Due to our current lack of talent on defense, the majority of names thrown out there as favorite targets are defensive players. I understand this thinking because this league proves time after time that defense wins championships. With that being said, I also think its important to understand that a championship level defense has never been purchased. Sure there are examples of REALLY GOOD defenses signing a FA or two to move their defensive ranking from top 10 to top 3, but our defense isnt that. Unfortunitely, its not even close since most doninate defenses stem from being able to put the QB on the ground.

In my opinion, signing players like Bruce Irvin, Mario Williams or any other player of that class of defense does almost nothing to effect this teams ability to win more ball games in 2017.

If the Falcons goal is to win more games in 2017, the offensive line is the area they need to spend their FA. This team isnt winning a SB anytime soon, its just not. The team simply doesnt have the talent to be looked at in that light. With that said, given a dominate offensive line that allows our QB to make the positional players around him better, we could outscore a lot of teams in 2017.

Getting players that can really play inside our offensive line would affect our teams Win/Lose total in 2017 far more than any defensive player in FA.

If the Falcons maximize the talent that they do have on the offensive side of the ball by keeping Matt Ryan upright, this team can have a winning season next year.

Continue to devote your high draft pics to defense to build a solid core, and hopefully you draft well enough that you can go after big money FAs on the defensive side of the ball in a few years to couple with a offense in its prime.

TY

One thing our fans are having a hard time accepting is the market is going to be high and this year players will cash in for way more then they might have gotten before. That is just the way it us going to be. We'very tried the bargin basement, no name, injured way to negative results. If we do things the same way we will surelyget the same results. I wish we could get a definite statement on direction. Are we rebuilding? Are we trying to go to the playoffs? SB?

Ultimately, we will have to build MUCH BETTER through the draft in order to have a consistent winning team.

I always look at FAs more as stop gap guys anyways, with the occasional "Big fish" catch. My reasoning behind this is two folds.

One, Teams tend to hold on to their most talented players and find ways to resign them for stability. And B, IF those guys do hit the market, as stated above they tend to cost more to sign. That tends to create a salary cap issue.

After seeing our pass rush stats the past few years, I'm really wanting Mario Williams..he had a down year in sack production last year simply bc he wasn't rushing the passer as much..if he could get 10 sacks, he would help out tremendously..not to mention free up other guys on the line..our dline would be FIXED basically...now with the oline, we could still sign a mid tier free agent at center like Wis and that alone would help a good bit..we have holes all around our defense but a pass rush would improve it drastically

FA players need to be really good, or they generally only last for a few years before being cut (because contracts are so high). Look at all of our recent big moneyUFA signings not named Michael Turner basically.

All of the real good teams build through the draft, and get value UFA. We need start hitting on picks. 2015 draft was a start!

LOL. I avoid many of your ****** posts. I just like calling attention to the truly terrible ones. Admittedly, that's not a small number. In particular, I like the ones where you tell everyone how smart you are and lie about your ******** history. Those ones are the beeeeeeeesssssssst.
