1991 Braves Miracle Season

An underrated move by Scherholtz before the '91 season was bringing head groundskeeper Ed Mangan over from Kansas City. That, combined with the Falcons moving to the GA Dome, really improved the playing surface at Atlanta-Fulton Co. That had a big impact on the defense, and by extension the pitching.

Ernie gives it a mention in this video.

Yep. Did not know that Ed Mangan was brought in from KC with Schuerholtz. But I had heard the stories about how horrible the field was before he got here.

Thanks so much for sharing that. Brought back some memories for sure. I went to see the Braves in April of 91 and there were empty seats everywhere. I went back to work and my coworkers laughed at me for seeing them since they had so many losing seasons up to that point. I remember one of them told a joke about someone leaving two tickets on his windshield to see the Braves and came back to his car and other people left their tickets as well. By the end of the season I was having my fun laughing at them as suddenly they jumped on the bandwagon and were going to Atlanta Fulton County Stadium to see the team. As Bob Seger sang in Against the Wind... "Seems like yesterday, but it was long ago". Can't believe that was 25 years ago and that year is so vivid in my mind...

The infield was notorious for bad hops on routine grounders. Remember, the Falcons chewed up that infield from August on, and they used to have the motocross and tractor pull events there in the late winter and early spring. Before Mangan, the ground crew was not much more than college age guys who hired on from the street. Not many professional landscapers at all.

Thank you for posting this. Brought back so many memories for me. The Company I worked for had season tickets from 87-91 , 3rd row back from visitors dugout, my boss was from LA and only wanted to see those games , ( well until August )  . I remember we always bowed to Deion , the chop came later referring to his Florida State roots . remember so many of the games on here, I actually caught 3 home runs that year, a Ron Gant, a Jeff Blauser and a rocket from Bobby Bonnilla of Pittsburgh that smashed off the facade in right feild and landed back down to me. So many contributions from so many guys that got so little credit, Brian Hunter had some timely hits, Mark Lemke was awesome  and Steve Avery was incredible . I even remeber the parade we had downtown, bumping knuckles with Deion , he wouldnt shake because of all the jewelry he had on his hands. Just thank you for posting this,

I thought it was cool that Brian Hunter came back to the Braves in 1999 and it turned out played a major role for the team that year since Galarraga sat out that year with cancer. Hunter and Klesko tagged teamed it at 1B and did a great job.

The beginning of a historic decade and run for the Braves. Pulling out a couple more WS championships would have been sweeter. Proud to be a Braves fan then and still am.

Well the movement of Hart and Coppy is to get the Braves back to the glory days of the 90s. It's amazing how so many people can't or refuse to understand that and are calling for them to be fired and hating on them for that.

I completely understand the cleansing of the team over the off season. It took balls for what Hart and Cop have done thus far. It had to be done to get out of those ridiculous contracts that had the team strapped down. My biggest concern is our scouts finding that good solid raw talent to keep our farm system stocked like we did in the 90's. Can we duplicate that...

Well considering we brought back Roy Clark who was responsible for a lot of what happened in the 90s I think the answer is yes.

And for us to trade for other teams top prospects is a plus and a start to the process of rebuilding. I completely see the blue print developing...We have some great baseball minds at work, though I will admit I was a little hesitant about Simmons and Miller leaving, there's no reward without the risk.

Well yeah. But it will be worth it in the end.

You can thank Bobby Cox for not having more titles. Leibrant vs Puckett is one. Leaving Denny Neagle in too long in game 4 in 1996 is another (the Leyritz game)

I'm not calling for a firing. I just disagree with the extent of the cuts. I hope I'm dead wrong. However if these risks we are taking backfire and these prospects are duds, it will set back this franchise 10 years and they should be hung in effigy (figuratively speaking of course)

Funny. Because had Lonnie Smith not made one of the worst baserunning mistakes in MLB history in game 7 of the 91 WS the Braves win the game and the title. Then its funny how you blame him for leaving Neagle in the game too long in game 4 of the 96 WS when the Braves still had a 6-3 lead after that inning. Guess Mark Wohlers doesn't deserve blame for serving up the homerun? What about game 5 that the Braves lost 1-0 on a fly ball that should have been caught by Jermaine Dye?

Good points, but I place my blame with the head honcho in every aspect of life. You are only as good as the one who leads.
