That's who I have in my Mock from day one..I'd love it if we can get Lawson,, I am making another new one but He will stay in my first ... I have a hard time thinking he don't rise up the board and we don't get him.. But, I did feel the same way about Beasley and wanted him also.. Funny how much alike it feels from last year... I hope we have a draft as good as last year or better.

I have a feeling this draft will be better. Not because of the 50 GMs they brought in, but because Quinn now knows what he has and what he needs.

I love the fact that he wastes no time in cutting folks and is constantly looking to get better.

I don't love Lawson but I do like him and he would be a big upgrade. So with that said I'd be cool with that pick. Unfortunately the way our pre-FA roster looks there are going to be plenty of players available at 17 at DE, DT, ILB, and OLB that would all be considered upgrades. We have to figure out the right blend.

Travathon at ILB + rookie Lawson at DE

or

Mario Williams at DE + rookie Reggie Ragland at ILB

KoG, seems like all the mocks I've seen so far, has him going several picks before us.  Don't get me wrong, he would be my first pick, too --- but, unless we jump up and give up something we probably shouldn't, I don't think we have a chance of getting Shaq Lawson --- hope I'm wrong...

He's definitely one of the guys I would like for the falcons to get.

OVERVIEW

Great things were expected from Lawson, who was the top-rated prep school player in the country out of Hargrave Military Academy after a successful high school career in South Carolina. He played well as a reserve for two seasons behind the ever-stacked Tiger defensive line, racking up double-digit tackles for loss each year (10 in 2013, 11 in 2014). With the departure of the likes of Vic Beasley and Malliciah Goodman, Lawson finally got a chance to start in 2015 and made the most of it, constantly exploding into the backfield to finish among the nation's leaders in tackles for loss (25.5) and sacks (12.5). Lawson's personal accomplishments (consensus All-American, first-team All-ACC) led to great team success, as he and fellow junior Kevin Dodd and sophomore Heisman Trophy candidate Deshaun Watson helped the Tigers to an undefeated regular season, ACC title, and national championship game appearance.

ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS

Built like a tank with thickly muscled legs and a broad chest. Clemson played him at 5-technique and standing up on the outside. Scheme versatile and will likely appeal to be 3-4 and 4-3 teams. Very powerful at the point of attack. Able to punch, extend arms and control the line of scrimmage or set a hard edge. Able to shock and shed blockers and has the hand quickness to staggered block attempts. Power allows him to play on other side of the line. Finished second in the nation in "stuffs" for defensive linemen with 17. Comes off ball low and with forward lean into his rush. Has frame to handle a double team. Has plus instincts and feel for the game. Toughness in full display.

WEAKNESSES

Thickly bound with very average flexibility. Average athlete for an end position. Not a natural hip bender and will have to focus on keeping pad level lower to unlock his leverage potential. Shows obvious signs of fatigue as game wears on. At times, is too content to lean on blocks when play isn’t run to his side rather than working to discard. Will have snaps where he seems more concerned with imposing his will on blocking rather than diagnosing the play. Doesn’t have the bend or upper body flexion to be edge turner as pass rusher. Effort sacks will diminish in pros and will need to become more nuanced pass rusher.

SOURCES TELL US

"I see Shaq as an outside linebacker in a 3-4. He's not the guy you want to turn loose against the quarterback, but he is the guy that will make it hard for tight ends to block him in the run game. We knew we couldn’t run at him and it changed how we called plays." -- ACC offensive coach

NFL COMPARISON

 Courtney Upshaw

BOTTOM LINE

Productive backup for two years before putting together an All-American season in his first year as a full- time starter. Lawson is built like a full-grown man and combines his instincts, toughness and power to fill up a stat sheet and set an early tone. Lawson's frame and game are easily translatable to the NFL, but his average athleticism and pass rush skills will likely have teams viewing him as a 3-4 edge setter or a 4-3 base end. Lawson may also have value as 3-4 defensive tackle in an upfield scheme.

Where is that from?

I've actually seen him come to us in some, then drop to the second in others with us taking Dodd.

Perhaps, but can they both be out there together without a pretty significant scheme change? I just think if we go Dline at 17 it needs to be someone who can play 5 tech or a replacement for Soliai.

I tend to agree.  There is no guarantee we're going to run a clone of what they ran in Seattle.  We don't have the back end personnel for one.  But if that's where they're headed, I think we'd be looking at a 5 tech on the strong side.

That said, Quinn strikes me as a guy who can scheme around playmakers, so adding a playmaker, IMHO, is more important than getting just another piece that fits.  Plus, we can probably find a suitable 5 tech in FA, and use Lawson on the strong side in nickel formations, which are more prevalent than base formations anyway.

Who is he going to push in to the 2nd? You do know that he is already projected as a first rounder by some people right?

Okay, so everyone is going in the first then. We should gear up for everyone with talent to be gone by 17 for one and definitely no talent in the 2nd...because some have projected everyone in the first.

Yeah me too but man it's been fun researching all of these guys fro sure.  Michael Bennett comparison is pretty good!

So far I am seriously annoyed by the number of guys who aren't even as good as advertised. Dodd, I'm not so sure. Our pass pro in Bama was spotty at the very best. Always that way. Not sure I want to crown homie...

Everyone won't go in the first, but its not like for Spence to go in the first he has to push someone to the second. He is a consensus top 15 pick by several people and a 1st rounder by just about everyone .

You do realize he was using dope over and over and got busted right? There are talented players without the bull following. Why are we talking about this guy? I refuse to discuss him any further.

LOL, I hear you man I definitely prefer Lawson.  Outside of these two the other top three DEs are really outside LBs for 3-4 scheme to me.

If you don't want him because of his drug history thats fine. I have the same views towards people with that history. I was just saying he is a projected top 10-15 pick.

As a Clemson Fan i will have my say here.

Shaq to me is a 3 down LE/RE that could be the power player we need. Opposite Beasley we could have a scary duo to eat up Qb's for years to come. He also has the power and awareness to set up Lb's for stops and crush PA passes. One year in the NFL and this guy with be a monster player for us. Very violent hands and a spin move that makes Beasley's spin look kinda over used ( We knew it was a desperation move for him ). I like the idea of a suffocating Dline and that is what Atlanta would be if Shaq was here.

Add DJ reader in the 4th and the NT position would be filled too.

D-line

Beasley   |  Jarrett  | DJ Reader  |   Lawson

Goodman|  Mbu     | Haggman    | Clayborn - Sign for cheep

Looks good to me

Dude, glad you mentioned DJ Reader.  I'll tell you what man, This guy is going to be one of the drafts steals imo.  He is a nasty beast.  I put on the tape of his Bama game and he is a grown man.  If we want to find an all beef option for cheap to replace Soliai, then this guy fits the bill and then some.  He's sneaky good and would bring lots of value later in the draft man.
