The truth about Georgia fans (it has nothing to do with being a top 3 transit city)

Recommended Posts

Bull crap excuse went around that the reason the city doesn't have that many falcons fans is because it's such a huge transit place.

Well my neighbors are.... Patriot, steeler, saints (but they are going away), panthers showed up mysteriously, niners, green bay, cowboys, a very small amount of bears fans, etc etc. (Teams that have rings and/or making it).

But yet I don't know anyone in the state of Georgia who is a browns, Texans, jags,  chargers, heck not even buffalo fans...... Guess those fans don't relocate.

So the truth is Georgia is filled with bandwagon or wannabe bandwagon fans.

Pats fans didn't exist prior to their SB win. At some point everybody jumps on a bandwagon. You might've been 7, like me, or 40, but the point is, we all choose.

As for Georgia vs other places, there are two major reasons sports fans here don't take sports entertainment so seriously. First, our priorities in life center on things that matter. Sports entertainment is fun, but real life and family take priority. That's a rare trait among sports teams with the most notoriously rabid fans, especially up north.

Second, the weather. With mild weather virtually the entire NFL season, there are other things to do. If you look, you'll notice many of the cities associated with poor fans are warmer climates.

Wow just WOW!

You are a long term member of the boards, so how can you have failed to read the many explanations behind why the Falcons lack a large and faithful fanbase.

You are correct that the FACT that Atlanta is a transit city is not the only reason, but trust me it is a huge reason.  I moved here 35 years ago and know hundreds of people here.  But almost no one I know can say they were born in the city of Atlanta.  Atlanta was one of the fastest growing metropolitan cities in the US during the 80s and 90s.  In fact for quite a few years, it was the fastest.  The explosion of suburbs into the surrounding areas that used to be agricultural or unused wooded areas was just mind boggling to behold.   The worst thing about Hurricane Katrina for the Atlanta Falcons was a HUGE infusion of Saints fans fleeing that cesspool city, and they did not return to NO either.

Not only do people move here from other areas of the US while bringing their allegiance to their former teams with them, but Atlanta is an international city as well.  There are a huge number of foreign born expatriates here who have never even seen an American football game, and could care less about the sport.  To them, when you say "football" you are talking about the sport of soccer.  My daughter-in-law and her extended family are among them.  One company I worked for here had 3500 employees and about half of those were not born in the US, or followed football.

When I move to Atlanta in 1980, I found that most people here who were sports fans at all were more interested in the Atlanta Braves than football.  Of the football fans in the State of Georgia the overwhelming majority are RABID college football fans, and have no clue or interest in the NFL at all.  The vast majority of people in the city of Atlanta who like football at all are college football fans.

Finally we come the the team itself.  The Atlanta Falcons are one of the worst sports franchise in WORLD HISTORY.  Just name how many franchises can exist for 50 years with the horrible overall record of the Falcons.  Sure we have enjoyed more winning season since 2008, the collapse in 2013 and 2014 is just one of countless examples of how every time you think this hapless franchise is about to "RISE UP" they find a way to shatter your expectations.  Even when I moved here in 1980 and became a huge fan, I had friends at work, who had been season ticket holders since the beginning, tell me they no longer attended games because they were sick of how bad the team performed.  You know what?  They were right.  I have continued to be a loyal follower over the years, and Lord knows how much money and time I have spent on this team.  But I have reached the conclusion that so many people had in 1980.

The Atlanta Falcons are just plain bad, and always will be bad.  Sure there will be more success with Arthur Blank than with the Smiths simply because Arthur Blank has more money to throw at the team than they had, and he is certainly a more savvy businessman overall.  But he continues some of the same old traits of the Smiths.  The Petrino hiring best illustrates this, but the recent failure to hold TD accountable while surrounding him with more and more layers of management personnel is a move right out of the Smiths handbook.

The fact is the Atlanta Falcons are lucky to have ANY fans at all, and no one has any grounds to criticize the fanbase for failing to support a failed franchise.

Nothing to see here: move along.

Note: I should just make a permanent essay about this topic as every so often someone here brings this topic up over and over ad nauseum.

This isn't Georgia. This is everywhere. I live in Portland, OR. Nobody out here liked the Seahawks for years and years. Suddenly, in 2012, all the "diehard" all timers showed up and Portland became a Seahawks city. They'll of course tell you it was ALWAYS like that

I think you are exaggerating just a bit man. The dome has some big time Falcons fans. When the team is good, the Dome fills up and it gets LOUD. Most teams are like that man. It's not just the Falcons

During my trip to Atlanta I visited a local memorabilia shop and bought a few items. While talking with the shop owner, he told me that Atlanta isn't really a sports town. Not sure if this is a cultural thing or because there is a lack of championships.

There is a ton of sports fans here. But it's not just for one team. Unless it's highschool.

Gwinnet gladitorrs have a decent amount of fans. And there is people at those games who don't pull for them.

Being a transit city has barely anything to do with here. Have you seen a Texans, charger, bills fan live here? I've seen them visit during a game. But it's so so rare you meet a fan of a losing franchise like the falcons.

Again, I guess just winning franchise fans travel. And that they only travel to Atlanta.

You know another transit place is San Fransisco, Dallas and Denver. Everytime I visited, I only saw a small percentage who were fans of other franchises. Yet in Atlanta it's rapid nuts.

Lived here my whole life and can't remember  a time I wasn't a fan. I'm a Tech Alum and love my Jackets but they are a distant sencondto my birds.

I love this team and I LOVE this city.  Don't give a **** is some Yankee from ESPN says this is a bad fanbase. I couldn't be more passionate.  Maybe you whiney ***** should quit worries about what shitheads in or from the north think.

San Fran and Dallas is just plain false.

Theyve been getting killed because their stadiums are half opposing fans.

Try living in a country like mine half the fan that supposedly call themselves fans probably don't even know Atlanta has a team and are perrenial bandwagon fans I see it on a yearly basis.

I fully expect to see closet Carolina & Denver fans out with there jersey's when whom ever wins the SB.

I have to admit I'll be in orange and white tonight, but that's because the day will never come that I root for Carolina. I have a projector home theater, so I'm hosting, but I've already told people there will be no Carolina fans in my house.

Never understood that myself I only support 1 team per sport I watch.I don't have multiple allegincences.I'm strictly a 1 team guy.I'll watch the SB today because I'm a fan of the sport.Who wins doesn't matter to me as all the other friends that are supporters of the NFL's teams are ggggooonnneee aswell.

Yeah, normally I don't have much of a rooting interest in the game. I just watch. But I specifically dislike that team.

Heck, I've always been a lot more interested in the championship games. This game is all hype and corporate back slapping.

There is nothing wrong with rooting against a hated division rival. I can't stand the Broncos, but will be cheering for them tonight because I don't want the panthers to win.

Falcons fan, so I cannot pull for Carolina, ever (unless it somehow enhances the Bird's playoff situation).  Further, people who make the blanket statement that Atl (or the State of Georgia, by implication) is full of bad sports fans have never sat in Sanford Stadium, which has 92K screaming fans in it every Saturday in the fall, and they haven't won it all since 1980.

It is a lazy argument perpetuated by ESPN and parroted by other media toadies.  There are passionate fans in and around this town, we just have different experiences, preferences and rooting interests than the NE-dominated sports media.

Screw them. our fandom is just as strong as anywhere else.  BTW, go Broncos, beat the piss out of Carolina, please.
