Falconsfan567
Hey old-timers! Whatever happened to Bob Horner? Why didn't he last longer with the Braves?http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/0/v27310493/mon-atl-bob-horner-hits-his-fourth-home-run-of-game
AEFalcon
If I remember correctly 2 separate wrist injuries were the main culprit. Didn't help that he became eligible for Free Agency at a time when owners were more frugal esp with veterans with injury history so he went to Japan. He came back to another team but he didn't last long.... I think injuries again. Shame really, he had a quick, short & powerful swing. I mean his first full MLB season was an MVP type season.
AEFalcon
Making Horner's 1st year numbers even more unbelivable; he was drafted out if college & named a starter for the Braves without ever playing a game in the minors. Hit a Home Run his first game! It's hard to describe how exciting it was when Dale Murphy and Bob Horner both started playing in ATL. Both were young and powerful. This was after a decade of epoch futility. It was he first time I remember being excited about he Braves.
MAD597
Murphy and Horner were fun to watch I was watching th game live when he hit 4 homers. As a kid with TBS the early 80's Braves were the first sports team I regularly followed. Taught me how to deal with horrible ATL sports teams

So, Horner almost had 5 HRs!
Positive Thinker
Horner was such a naturally gifted hitter. He was a bit of a liability in the field, but certainly not awful. He did have the wrist injuries, which is ironic because he was known for how quick and powerful his wrists were. He could wait on the ball longer and then snap the wrists. He was always prone to weight gain, and it manifested itself whenever he went on the DL. That was ultimately what shortened his MLB career. However he had enough left in the tank to ink a deal in Japan with the Yakult Swallows, where he became a fan favorite. That's pretty much where he ended up. If I am not mistaken, the movie "Mr. Baseball" with Tom Selleck was loosely based on his career in Japan.

Claudell Washington, Glenn Hubbard, Murph, Horner, and Chambliss.
