The NFL announced Tuesday that the St. Louis Rams are relocating their franchise to Los Angeles, adding another West Coast game to Atlanta’s 2016 schedule.

On Tuesday night, NFL owners voted 30-2 in favor of the Rams proposal to relocate the franchise, starting in 2016. The Falcons will return to Los Angeles for the first time since 1994, the Rams final season before moving to St. Louis.

“It will be great to have football back in L.A.,” said Falcons president Rich McKay.

Atlanta’s upcoming schedule includes three games out West, with games at Seattle, Denver and Oakland. The move of the Rams to L.A. means the Falcons will play half of their away games on the West Coast.

The process of relocating a franchise is not one of ease. On Jan. 4, the San Diego Chargers, the Oakland Raiders and St. Louis Rams submitted applications to the NFL to move their franchises to Los Angeles. The plan has been in the works for years, involving several people and difficult decisions.

“This is not a process that happened in weeks, not a process that happened in months, it happened in years and it took a lot of work by all the teams in play,” McKay said.

With four games on the West Coast, a significant amount of travel time will need to be accounted for. Head coach Dan Quinn will have the option to make a special schedule request to the League that will allow his team to play back-to-back games out West.

“It would make sense that might be something that we would consider. Go out there, play a game and stay out there a week and play another game,” said McKay.

Until the new stadium in Inglewood is complete, the Rams will temporarily play at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum.

A hard schedule gets harder... Another 8-8 year?

Probably. Wouldn't be surprised at a dip to 7-9, unless we sign a marquee player like Von Miller. It took Pete Carroll a few years to start winning every year too, so I'm not expecting the Super Bowl. I just really would like to spend this off-season and next to get a great team for the new stadium. One that's built right with strong lines. Jake should be a Pro Bowler by then and adding someone like Malik Jackson this year would get us there in time.

I think going 8-8 again would be acceptable, given how hard the schedule looks on paper. It's not just about who we play; the travel involved to play both the NFC West and AFC West is killer.

Unfortunately, 8-8 will be seen as a huge disappointment, and probably wind up losing a lot of people their jobs prematurely. You know Arthur Blank won't be happy to see us go .500 again when he needs the fans fired up for the new stadium in 2017.

Hopefully we can exercise some rational thinking and patience, even if the team has another average year record-wise in 2016. What I'm really hoping to see is continued growth and development from the young players, a better pass rush, an improved interior offensive line, and Matt Ryan showing more familiarity with the offensive scheme. We may be a much better team, just not win that many more games.

But if we can do that, and continue to build via the draft and FA -- picking players that fit our schemes -- I think we could make some real noise in 2017.
