Pass-Catchers More Than Willing To Join Matt Ryan For Unscheduled Workouts

Atlanta Falcons tight end Jacob Tamme knows the benefits of putting in extra offseason time with his quarterback. He's gone through the routine before during previous stops in Indianapolis and Denver with a certain guy named Peyton Manning.

"I've done some throwing in Chattanooga (Tennessee) with Peyton, and obviously Peyton's sessions at Duke are well-documented," Tamme noted.

When Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan was asked last week during a radio interview about the possibility of having such workouts with his receivers this offseason, Ryan sounded on board with the idea. Tamme certainly endorses it.

"I think to get together at some point during the break is a great opportunity, not only from a passing-game chemistry aspect, but even more so from a camaraderie aspect," Tamme said.

We'll see if it all materializes. But again, Ryan sounded prepared to organize such workouts. Former Falcons wide receiver Brian Finneran was the one who originally posed the question to Ryan on 680 the Fan.

"I think that's something that we do need to do," Ryan said. "For a long time, we had been a veteran team at those positions, whether it be at the tight end spot with Tony Gonzalez or wide receivers where we had veteran guys for a long time. I think we're young. We're young across the board.

"I think extra time put in together, whether it be here in Atlanta -- so many guys are here in the offseason, which is huge for us -- or whether it's getting together somewhere else and spending some time together and working together and trying to iron out some of the details and be a little bit more refined than we were this past season, I think that's a really good idea."

One of those younger receivers is Justin Hardy, who just completed his rookie season. Hardy showed flashes but still hasn't gotten a ton of work with Ryan after being inactive the first seven games of his first NFL season.

"Definitely I would," Hardy said of working out with Ryan. "Anytime you get a chance to work with your quarterback and get on the same page, then it becomes like second nature. Of course, I would be willing to go anywhere with him."

I'm very high on Hardy being a go to guy for Ryan on 3rd downs. I think Hardy can be a very good possession receiver here for a long time. He's not fast but has unusual burst out of his breaks that give him separation.

I'll tell ya what gaz, why in the **** hasn't ryan already begun this thing on his own? He's supposed to be the leader and after the way he and the WR's played this year, it should be mandatory to attend. Both QB and WR groups needed to learn the system better and between the thrown picks and the dropped passes, this chit should have already been planned by MR imo. What say you? Maybe he has done some of these private get togethers in the past.

I know Ryan and our receivers have often met in the offseason over the years and tossed the ball around. I'm not sure if this woukd just be something more formal or what.

I agree. This sort of thing should not even be discussed publicly. Ryan should have already instituted an off season program with his receivers long ago. Veterans or not, this sort of thing should already be in place. You can't make it compulsory or mandatory, but this sort of thing should come from the players naturally.

I would love to grab OJ Howard, the TE from Bama. He was underused there in Saban's program but when he got his opportunities he was lethal.

The Levine Toilolo experiment was NEVER one that I could appreciate. TE is another area of neglect by our staff. Tamme, as much as I appreciate his contribution, was never more than a stopgap imo.

Maybe Matt Ryan will take Tom Brady's attitude. I don't think he is built like that but if he took a leadership role in that department it would really help the team.

By Ben Volin GLOBE STAFF JULY 30, 2013

FOXBOROUGH — TOM BRADY WILL BE 36 SATURDAY, AN AGE WHEN MOST NFL VETERANS WHO ARE LUCKY TO MAKE IT THIS FAR THINK ABOUT TAKING IT EASY DURING TRAINING CAMP, OR SKIPPING THE FIRST FEW WEEKS ALTOGETHER.

The Falcons are allowing Tony Gonzalez, 37, to take all the time off he needs this camp as long as he’s ready for Week 1. And who can forget Brett Favre’s constant waffling at the end of his career, due almost entirely to his hatred of training camp?

Brady, though, has been forced to take the opposite approach this season.

Brady’s attendance in the Patriots’ offseason program had slipped in recent years, as he has morphed into more of a family man and worldwide icon, but this offseason was different.

Brady stayed in town this spring and put in time with his new teammates, earning one of 10 offseason MVP awards on Wednesday. Last week, he reported to training camp four days early, along with the rookies.

Brady didn’t suddenly rediscover a love of conditioning drills.

He knew that for the Patriots to be successful this season, he better start working with his new cast of receivers, who lack experience.

“I’m just willing to do whatever it takes,” he said.

Of the 12 receivers in Patriots camp, six are rookies, including two expected to make a big impact this year — second-rounder Aaron Dobson and fourth-rounder Josh Boyce. The veterans are also new – Danny Amendola and Michael Jenkins, the only receiver over 30. Among the receivers running with the starters during camp are undrafted rookie Kenbrell Thompkins and former practice squad receiver Kamar Aiken, who look like decent bets to stick on the active roster.

The Patriots have never had a younger and less experienced group at receiver since Brady took over in 2001. The top nine receivers in camp – that also includes Matthew Slater, Lavelle Hawkins, and an injured Julian Edelman – average 25.78 years old, with 4.22 years of NFL experience.

The dude who skipped all of training camp thought other players weren't willing to put in the extra work?

LOL, I agree. Good observation. If anyone were entitled, it was TG. His schtick got really old at the end of his run here. He raped us in that last contract. I didn't want him for that last go-round. Dude seemed selfish and arrogant in the end. I know he was dedicated to his craft like probably no other TE in history and he had been the epitome of hard work. But not so much near the end because we owed him nothing & he took full advantage of our GM.
