1989Fan
So, to put it mildly, Collins was up and down, down, down as a rookie at CB. Alford also has locked down the other side after this season IMO.Does anyone think there should be consideration movin him to safety? I just keep thinking of how well Mathieu made the transition to S in AZ. He was also a very raw CB who had great athletic traits.Allen can be re-signed as erfa and they can compete. We also have a need at SS, but I dont know that Collins has the physicality for the spot.I am just thinking it may be easier for him to man that deep safety spot and see the play in front of him.Maybe it doenst make sense at all, but I just wanted to get some chatter on it to get some feedback on him. And heck, maybe Quinn thinks he will still be our lanky cb2 next year and still shift Rocky inside due to his height.

1989Fan
OVERVIEWMade just 10 starts in his college career. In 2014, played in all 13 games, starting seven while leading the Tigers with 10 passes defensed. Allowed completion rate of a little more than 35 percent on passes thrown at him. In 2013, lost his starting job after two games, but played in all 13, allowing 10 completions for 163 yards on 18 targets. Selected to the Freshman All-SEC Team in 2012, finishing with two interceptions. Given a 4-star rating by Rivals and selected Mississippi 6A first-team All State while attending Olive Branch High School (Miss.). Underwent foot operation in March, but is expected to be ready for May minicamp, per NFL Media senior analyst Gil Brandt.ANALYSISSTRENGTHS Rare combination of height, weight and speed. Has the foot quickness and twitch to trigger on demand. Uses soft, bouncy feet to change direction and drive instantly on throws. Has arm length to play from trail position and still knock passes away. Desired awareness in zone with extended playmaking range. Will make plays outside of his area and has speed to come across field to chase down a loose running back or receiver. Able to redirect from press coverage and will only get better with more coaching. Leaper with the ability to challenge and win 50/50 throws. Buys in and does his part in run support.WEAKNESSES Only 10 career starts. Plays with talent over technique. Needs to improve patience in press coverage rather than opening up too early. More of a straight-line burner than fluid, change-of-direction athlete. A little stiff-hipped and is a tick slow to open and accelerate. Plays with build-up speed over instant gas. Inconsistent to turn and find/track the ball. Not a naturally aggressive, physical player. Can hit with force, but doesn't go out of his way looking for it. Showed more aggression as a tackler earlier in season than he did to close the year.DRAFT PROJECTION Round 1SOURCES TELL US "They all have holes, but Collins is what you are looking for in an NFL cornerback with his length and speed. He isn't there yet, but he has the traits and ability to become a high-end starter and maybe the best cornerback from this draft." -- NFC director of personnelNFL COMPARISON Terence NewmanBOTTOM LINE Immensely talented cornerback who brings the entire triangle (height, weight, speed) with him. Still learning technique and how to sink his feet with his eyes, but the instincts and athleticism to make plays on the ball both short and deep are what set him apart. Collins is a work in progress, but his physical and play traits create a very high ceiling if he continues to learn to play the position. 1989Fan
I think Collins has his share of moments where he was lost on the play.I disagree that he had a better year than Alford completely. So you think he will grow in to an outside CB? I am fine with that personally, at a minimum it validates the high pick and gives us three very good cbs.I am not hating the guy, just think w his size (6'2", 202 i think) he fits the position, and he may be better off seeing the field at the safety spot. Izo#2883
Our coaches got a clean canvas in regards to technique and recognition. I sure hope we can coach him up good. Might take 2 seasons though.

One that was notoriously a project. He still didn't have any bad games, that I can remember. He learned how to play deep 3, which is like half the playbook. Next year he'll get the other stuff down. I have no doubt he'll grow into a good outside CB. He may be able to play FS as well, but I'm not sure we want to make him learn an entirely new position, just when he's starting to get this one. That would set back his development by a couple seasons at least. Better to just draft an FS.

stizz
When was Collins down? I must have missed those games. He did better than Alf when he was outside. He was demoted in favor of Adams and King the final 3 games. I'm not sure how you can ignore his lack of awareness and physicality. To compare his rookie year with Alfords is ridiculous considering Alf can make a play on a ball and Collins is petrified of so.

Halsey.
Don't care if he plays CB or safety, as long as he plays well.
TheFalcoholic
He was drafted as a corner and he'll stay there. I think the thought process of the FO is get him ready to take over for Alford if and when he prices himself out of Atlanta as an unrestricted free agent. Rise_Up_504
Tru spoiled a lot of people with his rookie year play. Most rookies don't play that well. I don't know if Jalen will be a great player but we knew he was a project coming in. Idk about a move to safety though.

That's what Collins did well this year.
1989Fan
Good talk. Yeah, i am not sure safety is his best fit either, hence asking others input. He does have the measurables for it though (height, weight, speed). I sure hope he progresses going into year two regardless of position.Forgot about King as well. He could end up a player for us as soon as next season.

insight
You don't have to defend passes if your coverage is good enough to force a throw away from you. That's what Collins did well this year.Collins had an extremely disappointing year. Several teams picked on him due to his lack of awareness and poor tackling skills. There is no way he would be a good safety he has zero instincts and avoids contact. Hopefully with good coaching he can at least defend pass attempts and be productive in some capacity. Lornoth
Then why was he benched? Are you saying people can't be benched unless they do absolutely nothing well? Collins had struggles, but what he did well was generally have tight coverage, especially early in the year. I'll have to rewatch the games from the second half over again, I don't remember how he played.
brown bomber
He was drafted as a corner and he'll stay there. I think the thought process of the FO is get him ready to take over for Alford if and when he prices himself out of Atlanta as an unrestricted free agent. First of all, Alford ain't going nowhere. He was a TD pick to stay with Tru for years to come. If we have stayed with TD why would we let Alford walk? And Collins is truly not the one to replace Alford. All he has is height and length. He's very thin and not physical at all. I will say with conviction that DQ and company really messed up with this pick. Bottom line.
