Notre Dame Fighting Irish linebacker Jaylon Smith will undergo reconstructive knee surgery on Thursday to repair damage that includes a torn ACL and MCL, according to sources.

The surgery could impact Smith's 2016 NFL draft status if he still decides to forgo his senior season, according to league sources. He has been projected as a potential top five or 10 draft selection.

Smith is still expecting to apply for draft eligibility, school sources said.

Notre Dame linebacker Jaylon Smith was carted off the field after suffering an injury in the first quarter of the Fiesta Bowl against Ohio State.

Smith suffered what Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly described as a "significant" left knee injury early in the Fiesta Bowl against Ohio State.

Smith was the 2015 Butkus Award winner as the nation's top collegiate linebacker.

Hasn't Thomas Davis had surgeries on both ACL's? Look at how he has played the last couple of years. Todd Gurley came back from a torn ACL. Is he prone to injury?

The question is with the Falcon's where they are right now can you afford to take a flyer on his recovery? Or with our rebuilding are you willing to wait a year for him to play

This is the worst knee injury - the reason hes still going into draft is to enable his insurance policy he got - 5 mil, boom. Smart move, thats why you got that insurance for this very reason, hes likely a top 10 pick, but with this, its a total crapshoot if **** be able to come back, **** get picked up in the 4th or 5th, I cant see teams spending a 3 or higher on him at this point, just not smart.

To be fair, it's not like Collins was playing that much for us this year.

This is a year wher that 5th and 6th round pick would be great to grab players who are high ranking but injured. Unfotunately we don't have them.

regardless of medical report, I don't see Jaylon dropping out of the 3rd round - as good as medicine is these days - someone will take a flyer on him before the 4th round.

Would you take Smith if he fell to your 2nd or 3rd round pick?

I agree that surgeries and medicine has evolved a ton. His injury is very bad, but Smith is also 20 or 21 years old and would have time to sit back and take his time healing and make sure that doctors stay on top of things.

If everything works out, he could be a monster steal, but time and patience is the key. A strong FA period could make it possible for the Falcons to take that chance.

obviously I am not a doctor and will never be availed all the medical info. I believe the Falcon docs should definitely "kick the tires" on all the medical reports on the kid and whatever is made available by the agent to the NFL teams.

it is a gamble - but one I might be willing to take in 2nd round - I certainly would take the gamble in the 3rd round if Docs thought the likelihood is he could make a full recovery.

What does that have to do w/ anything? Falcons may have whiffed on their last two 2nd round picks so might as well roll the dice a third time?

I don't get your logic.

Didn't say anything about whiffing. I am saying that it's not as if we are expecting our second round picks to be instant starters.

well we very easily could have had starters in the last two drafts had we chosen more wisely - instead we drafted projects with motivation and character issues - I am all for drafting those players in later rounds - want more of a higher probability of immediate success with 1st/2nd round picks - nothing is a guarantee but you get my drift.

Fair. I liked the Hageman pick, even though I wanted Kony Ealy at the time. Taking Southward and Shembo over players like Martavis Bryant and Aaron Lynch are the ones that kill drafts.

Aaron Lynch was a straight thug coming out of ND and wherever else he transferred to coming into the draft. He had red flags on top of red flags if my memory serves correct.

I like Jaylon and really hope he recovers. But we can't use a pick on a guy who will basically redshirt and even then, will he come back the same? We have only a couple of picks, don't think it's wise to pick him when there are great healthy players available. That's just me.

Yep. You're not wrong. There were some major concerns and I actually thought that he would drop slightly further than he did. He was coming off a real down year if I remember.

Looks like there was no nerve damage. It's hard to tell how much of this is just positive PR, but if he checks out it'll be hard to pass on him in round two or late in round one.

A lot can change in 4-5 months, but before the injury he was the unanimous #1 player at a position of great need.
