vel
Lovie Smith has been running defenses since 2001. What kind of defense has Lovie ran his entire career? Cover 2. We took a few shots, but very rarely did we throw is deep, especially after halftime. That's both on the OC and the QB. I'm not throwing Kyle under the bus in this thread. But, Matt threw the ball 45 times for 269 yards. That is a sub-6 YPA. That's too many passes and too short of throws. The Cover 2 defense, particularly Lovie's Tampa 2 style, begs offenses to dink and dunk until they get close to the red zone, and they clamp down using the back of the end zone as an extra defender. That's why we ended up with four straight drives ending in field goals. That's what Lovie wants. Field goals generally don't win games. We did take some shots. The problem is they were few and far between. We opened up throwing and backed the defense off a little bit. Then they started creeping up again. The Cover 2 defense is not that hard to beat. How many chances did we give Julio to beat Chris Conte? That's a two sided problem. Kyle called more deep shots this game but not enough. Even when they were called, Matt double clutched so often instead of letting it fly. If you are double clutching, that means you have time, so it's not "Matt's OL didn't give him time". He had typical, NFL time in the pocket. We have to give the few playmakers we have a chance to make plays. That's been the biggest issue with the offense. Even when Kyle calls it, it doesn't happen. There were so many plays checked down before the play even had a chance to develop. Matt did a better job of scanning the field this game. A much better job. But he's still timid. We have not scored more than 21 points in the last 7 games. That's not going to work. We're still turning the ball over, but the worst part is the offense is playing entirely too timid and will not win games. This isn't a matter of lack of talent. It's a matter of mentality. Want to. This offense just doesn't want to right now.
zzfrow
Our offense is so predictable that is become an act of futility to watch us try to come up with anything that every other team in this div has not already seen countless times. We were swept by the Bucs, and the worse part of that is we looked like a team that had nothing to play for.
Sun Tzu 7
Our offense blows....Sure it was great until teams got film on it.Since then it's been in a nose dive.
likeriver
Speaking of tripping, do you think Matt Ryan would perform better on LSD? Dock Ellis pitched a no-hitter on acid, why can't Ryan throw TD's on acid?
RS91
It's unbelievable the number of times we run Julio on underneath routes. He's basically turning into a TE in this offense. It's ridiculous. Add in the fact that Matt ***** his pants as soon as a defender gets within 3 yards of him and you have the 2015 Falcons offense.

Guest Gritz
I have no confidence now in EITHER Shanahan or Ryan.I don't think either one of them can be counted upon for respective good performances of their duties on Sundays.
The Don™
This defense has given up an average of 19 points since the Titans game...That's pretty dam* good REGARDLESS of sacks. Can't believe how predictable we have gotten on offense though. At least it took a couple years for good ole Mularkey to get predictable. Golden boy Shanny has gotten very predictable with his playcalling. His tendencies are being exposed by opposing defenses. His useless play actions are doing nothing because he refuses to keep a good balance of pass/run. His 15-20 yard post that he calls to Julio a million times a game gets picked off by David.I still think Ryan is NOT comfortable in this offense. I've honestly seen enough of Shanny. It's his matra to start off strong but taper off throughout the season. He's done it everywhere he's been to an extent.

DMT11
were calling pass plays cuz Tampa is able to stop the run, they had it blocked up, we dont have the guys on the oline to get to second level and make the lbs pay and free the runner, this O is built around Julio, I dont know why ppl getting getting butthurt about it - we went over the X receiver WCO offense concepts all off season. Matt is just trying to make plays, cuz the offense isnt built around him anymore and him reading defenses. That worked better than what were doing now, but it still had plenty of issues, thats why they changed to this. They thought it was time for a change, not looking like best decision at this point, and we need to hold blank and TD responsible at the end of the day, there not just bringing coaches willy nilly and hoping they make it work with our players, there going into it thinking they have the horses or can get them to run it. MilleniumFalcon
Unfortunately, the Falcons fired Smith a season too late. If Ryan had Bruce Arians, this offense would easily be top 5. Cardinals should be thankful they got Arians. Edited December 7, 2015 by MilleniumFalcon

Andras
All but confirming that the Falcons problems are a lack of talent and not coaching. There's still a lack of coaching going on. At least we aren't trying to run Stephen Jackson anymore. AND at least the 4-3/3-4 hybrid is gone.
DMT11
Shannahan feels hindered by Ryans arm, Ryan feels hindered by Shannahans playbook...That actually true - and Matt doesnt have the offense going through him, anymore, he doesnt have the arm to slang it for the plays Kyle likes, so he has to change it, this was just a bad decision, Ryan is fine but he needs to be allowed to have things go through him,

Now you need the offense to get back on track and the defense to improve to top 10 next season.

Dock Ellis pitched a no-hitter on acid, why can't Ryan throw TD's on acid?Lol Matt's gotta throw the ball to the end zone to make that happen. What amazes me is Roddy was wide open in the back of the end zone and that's when Matt decides to throw it out of the back of the end zone versus last week. I think Matt Ryan has turned into Mike Smith. He's too reliant on doing the opposite of what didn't work last time versus playing his game. Neither of them knew how to compartmentalize mistakes, which leads/led to trying to rely on the past for present decision making.

Remember when Ryan used to anticipate breaks and throw into tight windows? You don't see any of that Matt Ryan anymore. I think he plays too cautious / tentative and is scared to take chances like he did when was younger.
vel
I thought the cover 2 killer was the middle of the field. It was when we ran it anyway.Middle of the field and behind the corners. We threw so many dump offs short in front of the LBs it was hilarious. Few shots deep to scare the safeties. Sometimes you throw it for the sake of throwing it. Gronk doesn't make that one handed grab in the playoffs last year if Brady doesn't give him the chance to make the play. Remember when Ryan used to anticipate breaks and throw into tight windows? You don't see any of that Matt Ryan anymore. I think he plays too cautious / tentative and is scared to take chances like he did when was younger. At all. He knows the routes. Even if he doesn't know the defense, he knows the routes. HeIl, Jameis was anticipating routes and he's 12 games into learning an entirely new offense himself...
