Lifer
That made Matt Ryan look so good. Let's face it, Matt has never been the same. Tony gave him something he never got back...confidence and a sense of comfort. The lack of a solid TE will keep Ryan from getting out of this slump. Falconsfan567
So Matt Ryan wasn't good as a rookie in 2008 without Tony Gonzalez? This is such a dumb thread.

Bawse
So Matt Ryan wasn't good as a rookie in 2008 without Tony Gonzalez? This is such a dumb thread.Well Matt had bowling ball Turner in the backfield to work PA a lot with during his rookie season, so that helped. Also a better OC, so that helped. EJmusic
?? He regressed in 2009 with Tony.

Bring It
Gonzalez was the consumate PRO.Ran good short routes.Could actually CATCH the d.amn ball. What a concept !!Was a huge target.Tough physical player.....nothing like the Jr. pretenders now taking up roster space.Today's Falcon receivers are a Joke....exception-Julio, of course....compared to Tony G.Period. I give lengthy responses
I would say it was a mixture of Tony and Turner leaving that led to the team's decline
XXVIII-III
Yes. Tony actually liked Matt's "high balls". Don't know why he can't adjust that part of his mechanics...
opensource01
Matt started locking on to receivers more while Tony was here. So he definitely has that going for him.

Of course he was a blanket for matt, but he passed the ball like crazy in 2013 and 2014. That's an excuse to me.

I can't believe Tony got so much flack on this board his final year. He's only the 2nd greatest receiver in history. He made our entire WR corp better. The drill he instated that he learned from Jerry Rice improved the group tremendously. They have regressed since he left. I can guarantee that they aren't still running that drill. When he made the comments about "not putting in the work" in his farewell locker room speech, that had to be part of what he was referring to.The more I think back on 2012 the more I realize how solid a team we had. That was a GREAT receiver corp. And there were so many little things that could've changed everything. Losing Turner in the 2nd half of the NFCCG. Getting Abe injured in a meaningless Tampa game. Not signing Osi one year earlier. Matt throwing to Roddy not Tony on that 4th down. Harry not slipping. Any one of those could've changed everything. Hindsight is 20/20. It's also **** ugly at times. 408Falcon
Honestly I feel like he needs a possession tight end or receiver like Tony. I have thought this for a few seasons. Tony just had that "IT" factor. You could depend on him. He caught everything away from his body. Dude was like Jesus Christ for us lol. I miss him so much!
