Colorado Springs Shooting At Planned Parenthood Clinic. Three Confirmed Dead...

Recommended Posts

Several others injured. The shooter is in custody, which is unusual for a shooting like this.

We do not know for sure that the person targeted Planned Parenthood. We need to wait for all the facts to come in regarding motive and methods. Latest reports suggest there could have been some explosive devices, but again we don't know yet.

Let's avoid jumping to conclusions until we're sure what happened. And let's try to make this thread about the ongoing situation and the facts as they become available, please.

Yeah, I had some people on Facebook about three hours ago trying to fundraise for Planned Parenthood based on this incident. Disgusting. It may be a terrorist attack against them, but nobody knows for sure yet. In all of these kinds of cases, I always try to wait at least 24 hours and most of the times 48 hours before being able to say what happened.

Here's what we know about the shooter:

robertlewisdear1.jpg

His name is Robert Lewis Dear, originally from South Carolina, lived in North Carolina, and it's unknown if he moved to Colorado Springs as a resident.

In 2002 he was charged with animal cruelty and peeping tom several times, but was never convicted. So dude's a suspected creeper.

There is some other information available here, most of it is stuff we already know:

Seems like the main thing left out there is the guy's motive for shooting people and whether Planned Parenthood was actually the target (which seems likely based on the information we have).

The Colorado Springs clinic is not the first Planned Parenthood facility to come under attack this year. On October 1, an unknown arsonist threw an ignited container of gasoline inside one of the organization’s centers in Southern California. The Southern Poverty Law Center identified three similar incidents at Planned Parenthood facilities in Illinois, Louisiana, and Washington in recent months. In September, the FBI warned law-enforcement agencies throughout the country about “lone offenders using tactics of arsons and threats all of which are typical of the pro-life extremist movement.”

In an initial statement, Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, which operates the clinic in Colorado Springs, emphasized its focus on safety measures and stressed that it didn’t “yet know the full circumstances and motives” behind the shooting. But it also noted the intensified rhetoric towards Planned Parenthood chapters this year. “We share the concerns of many Americans that extremists are creating a poisonous environment that feeds domestic terrorism in this country,” the organization said.

Other abortion-rights advocates directly implicated a series of videos about Planned Parenthood’s fetal-tissue research program released by an anti-abortion organization earlier this year. “Since a series of highly-edited, misleading anti-abortion videos was released in July, we have seen an unprecedented increase in hate speech and threats against abortion providers,” National Abortion Federation president Vicki Saporta said in a statement on the shooting. “We have been quite worried that this increase in threats would lead to a violent attack like we saw today.”

Agreed, as we should have in the Michael Brown shooting as well. Unfortunately, we know that didn't happen here on ABF.

This home grown jihadist wasn't given 2 seconds of coverage. Wonder why?

A reclusive student shot dead by police after stabbing four people in a California university campus attack ‘had far greater intentions to do damage’, Merced County Sheriff said Wednesday.

Faisal Mohammad, a freshman who majored in computer science and engineering at the University of California was carrying highly flammable petroleum jelly, ziptie handcuffs, night vision goggles, duct tape and a hammer in his backpack when he was shot in the back by cops.

In reference to the petroleum jelly, Sheriff Vern Warnke said: 'He had poor man's C4' - C4 being the dense, putty-like explosive used widely by the military and demolition teams.

Moments before he had 'smiled' as he used a 10-inch hunting knife to stab two students, a campus construction worker and a female teacher in a terrifying attack that was praised by an ISIS-linked Twitter account.

You can be anti vigilante and still believe organizations like PP are barbarians. Violence solves little usually and only causes you to lose the support of the masses.

No you can't. Just as Bernie Sanders vilification of corporate America drives companies to commit fraud, the far right's vilification of planned parenthood drives people to commit crimes. You see, any time you criticize something, you must accept responsibility that your criticism will be used as a weapon. People are powerless to prevent themselves from committing crimes.

This shooter lived in a broken down cabin (unibomber style) and looks to be severely mentally unstable. This guy is not going to be watching video's, watching the news, etc. to break his mind down further. Mental illness strikes again.

So he just drove up to a place, that happened to be Planned Parenthood, and started shooting. You're saying it had absolutely nothing to do with Planned Parenthood?

There was a large shopping center less than a quarter mile beside the clinic. If he was going for random killings, that would have been a more obvious location. Why didn't he go there instead?

Again, we need to wait until the facts come out before making judgments, either from the left that this was because of right-wing rhetoric or from the right that this wasn't about planned parenthood at all.

Sounds like we're getting close to discovering a motive. Why not wait another 24 hours before politicizing this?

Kicker I could be wrong but weren't you one of the ones blaming the little girl in south Carolina for being assaulted by the police officer in the school by saying she was responsible for creating the situation?

This is a perfect example of what certain individuals do after a mass shooting... "Lone wolf" narrative and mental illness. Could you for once reflect on the Caucasian community just like it is forced on the black community everytime something happens? Is it possible to look in the mirror like I am forced to do everytime anything happens in my community?

I knew this would happen...
