Well here we are finally at the last game of the regular season. For the first time in 18 years, tied with UGA for the 3rd longest active streak, Georgia Tech will not be going to a bowl game. With a lousy 3-8 record, Tech will be staying home this post-season. Georgia, on the other hand, has had a disappointing season at 8-3 but will take sole ownership of that active bowl streak with a 19th year and potentially have the 2nd longest active streak if Virginia Tech does not beat Virginia this weekend.

So with no championship appearance following this game, these teams are playing for pride. With Georgia Tech having the most recent win in a thrilling OT victory in Sanford Stadium last year, the Dawgs set out for Atlanta to regain state bragging rights.

Team stats at a glance...

Georgia
Passing offense - 104th nationally - 183.7 ypg - 2,021 yards, 12 TD, 8 INT
Rushing offense - 35th nationally - 195 ypg - 2,154 yards, 5.24 ypc, 20 TD

Another game Dawgs should have a HUGE advantage but can't shake the feeling they'll play down to these guys and we've already seen Tech raise their game for a big game at home once this year. They could care less about the bowl streak if they beat Georgia, would save their season.

I think it's pretty interesting UGA has allowed about the same amount of passing yards as rushing yards. There are no juggernaut passing teams on the schedule but that's pretty impressive. You don't see that too often.

Even more impressive is that the rush yards allowed had to have actually been greater than the pass yards until the past weekend (didn't see the numbers but I doubt GSU went much more than 50 yards in the air). Imagine that's pretty rare especially for a P5 team

ATHENS -- Several Georgia players shared a common memory from last year’s game against Georgia Tech.

It wasn’t Damian Swann’s 99-yard fumble return touchdown. There was no mention of Malcolm Mitchell’s fourth-down touchdown reception from Hutson Matson.

No, the prevailing thought was the Yellow Jackets tearing away at Sanford Stadium’s hedges once the game was said and done.

“That was my first taste [of the rivalry], after we lost that game,” running back Sony Michel said. “Seeing the Tech players tearing up our hedges. We felt like that was disrespectful.”

Last year’s game is still fresh on many Bulldogs’ minds. The game was a back-and-forth affair that included several mishaps on both sides. In the end, Georgia Tech prevailed 30-24 in overtime thanks to an interception by Yellow Jackets cornerback D.J. White.

Linebacker Jordan Jenkins found it hard to move on from the loss to a bitter rival.

“That took me a while to forget,” Jenkins said. “Just that last month, being in Athens or being around Atlanta, you just didn't really want to see any Georgia Tech fans. You know they [would say], 'Hey, uh, what happened in that last game in November?' It just really was a hard one to get over.”

Georgia head coach Mark Richt is still facing questions about the game. One of the key moments came after Mitchell’s touchdown with 18 seconds left in regulation. Rather than kick the ball deep, the Bulldogs executed a squib kick that gave Georgia Tech ample field position. The Yellow Jackets managed to get into field-goal range and kick a 53-yard field goal to send the game into an extra session.

Richt once again explained the motivation behind the play. He also said with hindsight, he may have made a different decision.

“We were covering kicks good just about all year at that time of the year,” Richt said. “By having the squib and them getting decent field position, obviously they got the one play, and (Justin Thomas) scrambled it just enough to give them a chance to kick it. If I had to do it again, I would kick it deep and just see if we could get them on the ground a little bit farther away from that goal line.”

Michel explained the players have looked at film from last year and have used it as motivation. The sick feeling of the home loss last year is something they can transfer to the Yellow Jackets, which play host this time around.

That image of Georgia Tech players smiling with pieces of the hedges betwixt their teeth will also be at the forefront of several Georgia players’ minds come Saturday.

“It is fuel to the fire,” Michel said. “It's something we bring up a lot. I just feel like once we go out there and execute, it's going to handle itself.”

Hey Peter. It's just that GT has it in them to score the upset, just like they somehow managed to upset FSU. And wouldn't you think that how GSU played Georgia, at Georgia, in a way would give the Jackets confidence they can likewise hang with the Bulldogs and beat them?

GSU is a much better team than Tech this year, so I'm not sure how much confidence it would give them other than they run a similar offense. I'm not saying Tech is unable to win this game. I'm just saying they aren't the exact same team as GSU.

No need to stir any pot, the rumor mill will be alive and well after the Tech game like usual. This game will not affect McGarity's decision because he's already made his decision. I've heard quite a few things just interested to see if any come to fruition.

mcgarity has no power to make any decisions. if a decision is made one way or the other it's the board and jere morehead doing it.
