Sandy5prings
I did some digging on the depth of our passing attempts on nflsavant.com and here's what I found. In 2015 so far, we are the 4th worst team in the league in terms of deep passes (15+ yards) attempted. Only Seattle, Dallas & Kansas City are worse.2014 sucked in every way possible but here's the deal, last year, we were 5th in the league in the same categoryIn terms of the percentage of plays where we try to throw deep, we are #31 in the league this year at 5.63% with only Alex Smith and the Chiefs below us at 5.48%We can talk about bad O-Line etc. but consider this, noodle arm Peyton Manning and the Broncos throw deep 10.41% of their plays, almost twice as much as ours and they have a terrible O-Line and Gary Kubiak is supposed to be running the Shanahan style offense. As last year's stats show, Matt Ryan is more than capable of consistently throwing it deep but for some reason, he has turned into the Southern Alex Smith. Drunken Minotaur Zebra
I do think that losing Hank really impacted our deep game. Our only deep threat is Julio and he is triple covered 90% of the time (and still comes down with it like half the time).

FentayeJones
So outside of Julio who is always triple covered and nursing a bad hamstring for half the season, who exactly is supposed to beat his man deep? Hank and Hester are the only other threats to go deep and they are hurt. That's not on Shanny, that's a personnel/injury issue. atlshocker
Smh at this thread... Let me see you become a nfl qb behind a terrible oline and throw a deep pass to a double covered wideout...
Guest Dirty Bird Nation ®
You guys are crazy. Hank doesn't run deep routes. Even when he was there, please someone tell me how many deep throws Ryan attempted? With Hank or without Hank, the majority of our passes our short routes to Julio, the TE, or the RB.And from what we've seen Roddy is more than capable of getting open deep

*Old Pappy Falcon*
Ryan is looking more of a Robot type qb than ever. I can't fault him for everything with the offense, but Shanahan should have adapted to the power of our team weeks ago.I'll tell ya right now even if we blow the doors off these next two opponents at home, I want as a fan to see a consistent offense on the road. No more lackluster crap and looking confused. If this can happen, We do have a shot at this.
Gold4425
IMHO Ryan and this offense misses a favorite whipping boy to some on this Board Harry Douglas. Okay Harry was not an elite WR, I get that. But Harry was respected by MR, JJ and RW and most times though a few drops he was dependable. A hometown guy who never caused trouble, was a piece of the glue and a great 3-4 option. HD would have been a good 3-4 option and mentor to Hardy. The Falcons need someone else to take the top off the defense. This is fixable. Dri Archer is out there for free, What he broke the Combine records. His problem with the Steelers were they tried to make him a 180 lb RB and he wasn't going to do it in the NFL or play before their other 2 RB's. He can help us at WR and PR. Some aren't willing to hear this but Speedy Reedy can help this team too. Okay he is not perfect or an All Star but Speedy can stretch the field and KR, RW, Hardy and Williams will have opportunities. Speedy rarely got a chance to work with MR only T. J. Yates who was off target this pre season. But we know that won't happen TD rarely makes significant changes mid season, has all kinds of excuses but front runners the Patriots and the Bronco's will. And I honestly believe that WR Coach TR is not into developing young WR's or giving them chances. Remember he was MS Assistant H.C.
Draftnut57
Thank you for posting , You proved the post I've been bumping for the last month,, Don't fix the part that was not broken. Keep our passing game, the one thing that was right and the one thing we were very good at. If they can figure this out, we may not lose another game.. It's the one thing they must see and start back if we are going to have a shot in the playoffs , or to even make the playoffs, Because the last 4 games , we've been going backwards ,,Very fast.... I've said if over and over, fix what's broken and leave our passing game the same as the last 5 years. It was the one thing we had down right. The Don™
Besides the turnovers and lack of redzone efficiency, the other thing that has plagued this offense the last 4-5 games is other teams' ability to sit on our short stuff because we are no threat to take shots down the field (not talking about the 20 yard intermediate throws). I don't have to patronize because most of us know football, but when you don't even ATTEMPT to go deep, it allows other teams to load the box up, potentially stop the run and pretty much know what's coming...which makes their job infinitely easier. For example, look at the amount of batted balls at the line, which should give you an indication that opposing defenses know that we've become a majority short pass team with little deep threat...again, I mean at least attempting to go deep.If you remember, this exact topic was brought up during the Mularkey days. Teams began loading the box and sitting on the short stuff and stopping it with ease.I know we all remember the Titans player screaming at Ryan (2010?) that he knows what's coming on the next play.Even I have started to call out running plays from my couch...I'm not calling for anybody's head but there are things we can do to get offense back on track sooner rather than later. Power I
Awesome. Let's try to be more like the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Power I
We have 7 less attempts than Mike Mularkey's team, 8 less than the New England Patriots, and 9 less than Dirk Koetter's team. This conversation is kind of getting ridiculous.

JDaveG
Hank don't run deep routes tho. He's only productive across the middle and redzone.Wrong. I posted a gif in another thread to demonstrate that people other than Julio are sent deep. I couldn't figure out who the receiver was running the deep post.It was Hank. Here's the gif:
Flying Falcon
He can still draw coverage off Julio when he fakes deep or just goes midHe doesn't "fake" deep. Hank runs intermediate routes. Across the middle. Like 5-7 yards down the middle.

I couldn't figure out who the receiver was running the deep post.It was Hank. Here's the gif:How can you tell in that gif? It could be Julio. Shanahan has known to put Julio in the slot this season too. Ok, I can see Julio close to the play.Look at RW running with the DB giving him a 5-7 yard cushion.
