An Eye Towards Next Year-Who Is The Dead Weight?

Guest Gritz

Looking at this roster it's obvious that there is a lot of dead weight on this team.

While I thought that the signings of Reed, Durant and Hankerson were intelligent mid-level FA acquisitions none of them IMO have really made significant, weekly contributions to the betterment of this football team. I know injuries to the above 3 are a factor but Reed is supposedly healed and I've yet to see him make an impactful play.

Some vets who are longtime Falcons might need to go too. Roddy, Moore, Biermann?

So, who ya got? Who (players only please) would you like to (realistically) see given their walking papers before the Falcons tee it up next September?

Freeman since he only got 12 yards yesterday and therefore must have hit the wall

Seriously, I expect more turnover on the o-line and at least one defensive pass rusher (probably Irvin and 1 in the draft, to be honest). I think we have a lot of 1-year rentals on the defense that will need to be either re-signed or upgraded. I absolutely expect us to get a free safety in the draft or FA, and maybe a SS too. We need linebacker help. We could use another receiver or two, but we might simply cut Hester and Weems and move up some of the guys lower on the roster. That probably depends on Hankerson's health and play. Tamme is a pleasant surprise, but I wouldn't be stunned if we drafted another TE.

Shanahan.

Some team needs to please do us a favor and make him a head coach.

Shanahan won't get any HC offers if the offense continues to struggle mightily. It just isn't a realistic possibility.

Maybe he'll get a position as a defensive coordinator since he managed to neuter the Falcons offense lol.

I'll see myself out.

Hey, it made me laugh...and the way the Falcons have played for the last month+ I haven't been laughing much on Mondays.

this is true. we turned over a good bit of the roster, but we replaced them with a bunch of guys that will probably be replaced themselves. i imagine we will resign a few but the rest were just a stop gap to help get the system started. some will not be back next year and we will bring in more guys. this is the first year of a new coach. it is going to take a little time, but this instant gratification oriented society does not allow for that anymore.

This is what I think as well. We all knew, the reasonable posters at least, this was at a minimum a two year rebuild.

If we are serious about only rushing 4 lineman 95% of the time we don't need better LBs. we need better DE pressure.

Add in that D line is DQ's love and that means Kroy and Schofield are more likely casualties to me. Look at how Seattle continuously loaded up on DE and DL (the way we load up on CB). People made fun of them until it worked.

To me the top Offense priority has to be a Center that can hold up in pass protection. ZBS centers that can pull and run stretch zone runs are great. But Ryan can't run a 5-7 step drop pass play with a ball snapped on the ground and a bull rush up the middle.

Brooks Reed is good against the run, and was never a good pass rusher. I would like for us to get more pass rush up the middle.

Disagree.

One of the reasons Reed was brought here was that he was supposed to provide some additional pass rush on blitzes.

Schofield has played very well and he is very versatile. And importantly for him, he has stayed healthy. He'll get a multi-year deal for the right price.

Kroy was a stop gap. He's gone.

I hope so. They love using Kroy on run downs, but good grief every time I see him in the game I know some bad **** is about to happen. Even in the SF game, the announcers were praising him for being in perfect position on the play. Well, yeah, but the next thing they said was "he just didn't have the speed to get to the corner." I could be in perfect position and NOT make the tackle.

Yeah, the few times I focused on Biermann yesterday he looked old and slow.

It's over for him.

Kroy has got to go, unless he is brought back at the minimum and only plays special teams

Moore, injuries are yearly now

Hankerson - we have his replacement once Hardy gets up to speed this year.

Moeaki - Toilolo is more important with his blocking skills imo

Stone - nothing need be said

We still need better LBs, two more DBs, a playmaking Safety and a headhunting Safety thats not alway injured, and some upgrades along the Oline.

Everyone playing center, Moore, Bierman, Babs, Solia, White, Handerson, all of the LB's.

We also need a starting caliber guard. We really have two second stringers now. One could be serviceable as a starter but the other is a backup. A better TE would be nice.

Really, in the draft I see us going after a DE in the first round. Then SS, WR and center are all equally are next biggest need. We also need some LB's.

I'd keep Clayborn. He hasn't looked all world, but he hasn't looked bad either. When there are a bunch of guys threatening the QB, invariably, him or Babs is among them.

I'd keep clayborn as well. He's good depth of anything. He and schoefield are good rotation guys. But we still need to starting DE's imo. I know everyone will give Beasley a pass cuz he's a rook. But I still don't have faith he'll be much more than he is now.

The ZBS is great!

Until it's NOT.

A defensive front 7 loaded with Beasts, and the secondary to go with that, that allows a team to just play base defense and NO blitzing is amazingly wonderful!

Related note... I've been told rainbows have pots of gold at the end of them.
