Silver Lining In Our Losses

I for one hate losing diviosonal games under any circumstances. They are slightly more damaging then any other loss as you have to win your divison to get into the playoffs. Yet in neither of our two losses (or close wins for that matter) did I ever feel like the other team was the better team. It always seemed like we were shooting ourselves in the foot with dumb peanlties and turnovers. While they are correctable during season vs say a complete lack of talent there is no magic flip to switch and mke it all better.

Yet in still, this year feels different. It seems like we are working out the kinks. Sure I would love to be undefeated at this point but the fact of the matter is NFL teams are hard to beat week to week no matter who you play. Im curious to see how these guys repsond to adversity. I would rather a rough spot happen in the middle of the season so we have time to correct it then then have the bottom fall out in say the playoffs. This coaching staff feels different I think we make adjustments and make a run.

I really thought this team was getting things together for a serious, deep play-off run with the first three games, despite some obvious issues on both sides of the ball. But since the first three games, I'm not seeing anything but confusion, sloppiness and ineptitude. The Falcons have returned to their traditional mode, which is to play just good enough to lose. Two steps forward, three steps back.

I have no hope or favorable expectations left at this point. After the past four games I'm burnt out and dismayed. If they get it together, great. If not, we'll do what we always do, start thinking/talking about next season and life in the ATL will proceed like it always has.

You are a victim of your own expectations. Had not a bunch of people WAY overreacted to the first 3 to 5 games, we would not have all the doom and gloom postings here. This a rookie head coach and an offense and defense trying to learn new systems and at least the defense undergoing a retooling. Rome wasn't built in a day.

I tend to agree with the OP. To me the big difference this year is that we have yet to be owned on the LOS like we have been the last two years. We may be struggling to get sacks, but our DTs regularly get penetration in the running plays. While we may get pushed back occasionally on passing plays along the OL, it is far from the jail breaks we were giving up last year.

For the first 40 minutes of the Giants game, it felt like we were getting out butts kicked a bit. However, for the last 20 minutes of that game we exhibited outright ownership of the LOS. The Dallas game was similar. I don't feel like we have been physically dominate since the Miami preseason game. We have changed over most of the OL since that game. As ugly as that was, we were still in the game an half time.

We run the ball and stop the run. That is VERY different from the last two season. I share the concerns of others expressed in this thread. It takes the wind out of your sails when you cruise up and down the field against weak opponents, then lose the games due to turnovers and penalties. That is not cool and it is not alright. That said, we have a core strength we have lacked for the last two seasons...even when we are playing ugly. As long as that continues to be the case, I feel like there is always a chance we can get comfortable on offense and that those near misses on defense will become sacks more often.

Yep, we've all played through this countless times over the past month, right? The issue is NOT that there is a rookie HC and roster changes, new schemes, blah, blah, blah. The issue is that the team looks worse now than at the start of the year, not better. And the turnovers and penalties are way out of balance for this time of the year and the overall veteran leadership on the team, especially the offense, which is the biggest offender and biggest under-achiever.

I don't think many of us that are aggravated with the way this team is playing believes that Rome was going to be built here in a day, but I certainly think many of us expected the team would be getting better by mid-season, not worse. Hope this clears things up for you. Please copy this and print it out and put it by your monitor so you won't to have post this comment anymore. Thanks in advance.

Only silver lining I know of involves Jennifer Lawrence

Team shouldn't have to rely on losses to help spur change

They're all a part of the process...

Please go look up the countless articles about the WCO and how long it takes to learn to the point of being consistent and effective. You might learn something. Or you could just keep whining constantly. My guess is you'll go for the whining.

I stopped buying into that myth long ago

I'm surprised you bought into it in the first place. Thought you were smarter than that.

I bought into it when the franchise turned around years ago

Then sold that stock when everyone else said to hang onto it

The main problem I have with losing games because of carelessness is by the time we get the kinks worked out, other teams could have theirs resolved as well.

You can't keep giving games away, and expect it to not hurt you. We saw this last season with a few games...win those and we were in the playoffs

Excactly! Those games will catch up soo fast and bite us. At this point right now, I don't care how.....just win the dang game sunday no matter what!

I was thinking the same thing the last few days, If we had won that last game, We may have kept calling the same plays in those circumstances ... Which would have been really bad for this team.. We need to call the right plays in every situation.. Not pass the ball on the two yard line, Example. It's like the last 3 games they have just been experimenting with plays instead of trying to call the best play to win, That needs to be put to bed and focus on being a top seed at the end of this year.

I will say this if we come out with the same struggles against the 49ers I will agree with your sentiment that there is a real problem with discipline. Even with the bye week coming up, which is a turning point for a lot of teams, I don't think,it will be fixable this season to match our expectations however inflated.

While I loved the win streak we were on I didn't believe we had suddenly become a dominant team. It had more of a Rocky vibe then Drago. We would just keep fighting and stick around until the end. I still like our chances against anybody. All vets are off once you hit the playoffs. Even last year I hoped we made it with our obvious flawed team. You just never know what can happen once you get there.

My question to you is how long you gonna hold on to that heartbreak man lol. This ain't Smitty's team. We are not losing in the way Smutty lost, we aren't even playing the same type of games minus the Matt Ryan 4th Qrt comebacks. A lot of Falcons fans have this woe us me attitude I can't understand that. I guess cuz I came in with Vick in 01. The worst times I have been thru were 07. You guys are sad in believing in the team lol

I personally see no silver lining in how we've managed to lose. At least if you're bad and just lack talent you have an excuse. Virtually impossible to explain the lack of discipline they've shown throughout October.

So you don't believe guys can't be coached up to stop fumbling the ball and committing stupid *** penalties. Its not like we are tryna train dudes to all of a sudden run 4.3s. The problem is discipline not talent. I seem to remember guys crying about Smitty's team playing too uptight and scared to make a mistake. Quinn is the polar opposite. I will take mental mistakes over playing timid.

The truly great teams......there are very few.......don't GIVE games away or beat themselves.

Name one of those "truly great" teams who were "truly great" within their first 8 games. Potential for this team is sky high. We just made taking our bumps and bruises which are expected with implementing a brand new system look **** good. 6-2 good. The win streak made people think we weren't going to lose a game again or something

I'll give you a 7-0 team

The Patriots. With the way they're playing I fully expect them to be 8-0 around 4 pm tomorrow, unless they call the game early to apply for the mercy rule

The Bengals too. They look dam good

They were undefeated their first 8 games in Marvin Lewis and Bellicheck's first year?

You said name a team that was truly great within their first 8 games. I did

Now, are you backpedaling and referring to the first 8 games in the history of the franchise, coaches, etc??

My entire premise is that this a new team not like Smitty's team. No back pedal at all. Don't try and push the narrative that I implied no great time ever started 8-0. Don't do that kid lol.

My point is new coaches rarely get off to as good as starts as we have. Great team takes years to become great. Sky is the limit if this is how the team looks this early in Quinn's tenure
