Fixing The Turnover Epidemic

Recommended Posts

Great post. Seriously.

The turnovers and penalties are getting worse or are remaining a constant issue with each successive week. To make matters worse the Falcons D all of a sudden isn't creating enough (or as was the case yesterday, any) turnovers to even the slate.

Some people act like there is just some magic button that this team can push to get rid of the problem.

Turnovers and penalties are the twin children of the same parents: Lack of discipline and Lack of focus.

In Quinn's pressers he talks more about working everyday on protecting the ball, limiting negative turnovers and finishing the game than any other topics. Nothing wrong with that-- they should be working on that. But it has to be HOW they are working on those things. Seems that when players commit these mistakes in games they are not held accountable in a no-nonsense way. Maybe the coaches need to kick some serious bu**. Bench the worst offenders, etc. Get serious about this with zero tolerance. If that doesn't fix it let there be no sacred cows on this team !!

Well the penalties are a bit out of our control.... some of them.

The false starts and lining up off sides are things we can control, but the holding and PI's are at the mercy of the refs,

The turnovers are 100% of our guys.

Better ball security of the runners is imperative.

As for the bumbled snaps... Maybe give Chester a try, He has experience snapping.

Maybe give Grakowski a shot..he has started as a center in the nfl and he knows our offense.

If they wanted to do more than just patch it up we could make a play for Mack.

Normally I would not be in favor of trying to bring in someone at center mid season but Mack would be an exception for a couple reasons...1. He is a good player 2. And this may be most important... He has experience in this offense.... this EXACT offense since he was with Shanny last year.

We have a few options... some are better than others

But something HAS to be done. We can not continue to have multiple unforced turnovers.

When it comes to INTs and fumbles it depends on a few factors. the picks Ryan has thrown in the end zones, the tipped one by a lineman, i dont have a problem with those. We arent out there just playing catch, defenses make plays. the problem is the INT Ryan had yesterday. There is no reason to toss it into triple coverage like that, ever. As for the fumbles, the biggest ones are the ones we cause ourselves...awful snaps, Ryan handing it off wrong, ect. Don't really have an issue with the Coleman fumble or the Julio one (although this should be a pride issue for him, you can't let someone just take it from your hands). If we stop killing ourselves, focus on the little things, the turnovers would be cut in half.

As for penalties, they are putting the O in really tough situations. Long plays keep getting called back. This is also fundamentals. I think we just need the bye week to get here and the offense needs to sit down and talk to eachother and air it out.

proud of the D tho, you can tell they are all just trying with what they have to keep us in it. Im sure we lack and size and skill on D comparatively but the heart and effort is there. There aren't many times you can find a player on D and say they aren't putting in the effort.

It seems like the team as a whole isn't playing on instinct or reflex anymore. I think old habits die hard and the DQ system of playing simple and fast has reverted to overthink everything way too much.

I think that's why the run game is working so well. It's simple and straight-forward. EVERYONE NEEDS TO SLOW THE EFF DOWN and not think so much!

Matt throwing on one read instead of progression

Bad snaps when trying to pull to quickly

WTF Zone reads - why the **** is that in our playbook

What do we do? Bench Person, then bench Stone, then bench Stone again and put Person back in... I'm not sure that that helps.

1) it starts with practice. You cant use our D to defeat our O. If our D can force turnovers vs our O. In game we are screwed because its obvious we cant hold onto the ball.

2) Call Mike Smith and beg him for advice. because he lived by this. You have to win the turn over battle and gotta play mistake free.

You put the ball on the ground, you get to sit for a while and let someone else get reps and see if they can hold onto it. Might not be a proven winning formula but people will start holding onto the ball.

3) fundamentals. You have to secure the ball before taking off or worrying about speed. Jones runs like AP at times. Letting the ball go away from his body. Every DC in the our schedule is focusing on tackle the ball vs us. Stop worrying about what happens between the 20`s and secure the ball.

4) why do we have a guy playing center who has no experience being a center? Thats fixable as he gets reps. Learn from mistakes. But its gonna be mistakes until he learns that lesson.

What worries me is the botched snaps by our centers has been going on since day 1 of training camp so they have been "working" on that since then. This is the reason some of us were completely baffled when Hawley got cut. Myself and others predicted we would have turnovers based on bad snaps.

Also, from day 1 of training camp Quinn had players and coaches sneaking around trying to knock balls out of players hands anytime they were holding a football. That was supposed to help the offense think about securing the ball and the defense constantly think about taking the ball away. Securing the ball and taking the ball away were very heavily emphasized since day one.

It's hard to believe these things are still a problem, but they definitely are.

Turnovers come from being undisciplined, unfocused, and unaware. Its a direct reflection of coaching, people need to be held accountable and disciplined for it in order to get it corrected. I cant remember the name of the movie but the RB had a fumbling problem so the coach made him carry the ball everywhere with him throughout the campus and told the other players they'd be rewarded if they got the ball from him. One day in class he was dosing off and someone slapped the ball out his hands and it caused a dog pile in the classroom but the RB came out tne scrum with the ball, and he didnt fumble anymore. Yea I know it was just a movie but it showed accountability and good coaching. The coaches need to hold these players accountable. When I played ball win or lose you paid for your mistakes. Sometimes we have guys running drills/laps/suicides directly after the games.
