Washington's 2Nd Ranked Rushing Defense?

Washing's defense is ranked 2nd in total rushing yards allowed per game. That sounds impressive on its surface. However, here are their opponent's offensive rushing rankings (total yards/gm)

  1. Mia--31st (69 y/gm)
  2. Stl--23rd (94 y/gm)
  3. NYG--24th (93 y/gm)
  4. PHI--30th (70 y/gm)

With a small sample size, you can argue that they are 25% of the reason that those numbers are so low. However, those teams are not running much in general. Another factor is that Washington leads the league in time of possession (we are 2nd), so their defense may not be seeing a high play count (I haven't checked it).

I'm not not going to completely sell that they are a good rushing defense. However, I am selling on the notion that they will shut our run down completely. We are the 13th ranked rushing offense. They haven't seen anything close to that yet. We may not light them up, but I think we can do enough to keep our play action passing game effective.

Simple. Stop the run. That's how they control TOP. That's how we've controlled TOP.

Not that simple but I disagree. I think we have controlled TOP with our 3rd down conversions with the passing game as well as positive running in early downs. We have very long drives and that can only happen with balance.

Well, that's how the Redskins have done it. They're not going to try and put the game in Cousins' hands. If that happens, they're really screwed.

You control the clock by running because it does t stop after the play. An incomplete pass stops the clock. So typically the run game is the way to control the clock. Most good TOP teams control the clock on the ground.

because of common opponents they've been studying us for much of this season.

*play gmen - study our game against them.

*Play Eagles - study or game against them.

*upcoming game with us - study us more.

Since we don't do fancy stuff I don't think we'll be easy to exploit but, if any team knows us well in the classroom it's the Skins. I would be surprised if they knocked us on our heels once or twice.

I understand that's the case generally. I was just saying that's not necessarily how the Falcons have been controlling it. It's been 3rd down conversions and long drives.

Saw a Stat where we had the most 10 play drives in the league. That uses the running game and a lot of high percentage throws.

Sure they have. Every run takes time off the clock. Not just at the end of the game. That's what happened last year. We scored quickly but we could not manage the clock on any level.

Yea I can understand that although he probably gained a lot of confidence from that drive he put together to come back and win last week against the Eagles.

  1. Mia--31st (69 y/gm) struggled to run the ball all season, only went over 100 (101) rushing combined once
  2. Stl--23rd (94 y/gm) struggled to run the ball behind horrid line until Gurley returned
  3. NYG--24th (93 y/gm) has not gone over 100 combined rushing once this season
  4. PHI--30th (70 y/gm) struggled to run the ball all season, only went over 100 rushing combined once

I'm not saying that their defense sucks or anything, but it's also not like they've been facing teams with good rushing offenses either.

That's true and all but you have to factor in the importance of the run. Many here are just waking from that passing league lie they believed.

Oh trust me I do. Lol.

We've been without a running game for soooo long, about 5 years. It's definitely important.

Basically those first few games where we used the heck out of Julio and people were concerned opened the flood gates and now the running game flourished combined with the OL cohesiveness.

Now defenses don't know what to do. At the end of the season when all is said and done the one game I will look back to that sparked the success is the Dallas game. That's where our OL gained confidence and was like....we can do this.
