Pioli's Good Friend Jimbo Fisher Said We Should Take Freeman

While Freeman has taken the NFL by storm, the team has been high on him dating back to the pre-draft process. During that time, Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff and assistant GM Scott Pioli visited Florida State to scout players and work them out. Pioli has a very good relationship with head coach Jimbo Fisher and Fisher told Pioli in private that it was Freeman that rallied that offense (which also included Jameis Winston) and was a leader during the national championship run. On Day 3 of the 2014 draft, with the Falcons needing a RB, Pioli got Fisher on the phone with GM Thomas Dimitroff to reiterate his sentiments about Freeman, which sealed the deal for Dimitroff to make Freeman the 103rd pick in that draft, and he’s been a terrific fit as a tough, one-cut runner. From the initial visit to the draft process and now in the early stages of his career, Freeman has fit the bill as the type of player Atlanta wants to build its team with.

Smitty started 2014 on the hot seat so he was not going to play Freeman over the washed-up SJAX.

Oh well, it worked out as we got Quinn and Beasley.

And this is when I went stone cold on Smitty. He didn't even go down swinging in my eyes. It was the same old same old until the end

This is exactly what scouts working under a GM are supposed to do, dig up quality players based on organizational set parameters and bring them to the GM to make the call. I've had an in depth conversation with Falcons scout Ken Herock and he told me all the scouts will have a few guys they are extremely high on each year.

This is how it works in Baltimore with Ozzie Newsome as GM. His scouts are told what to look for, bring the options to the GM to make the call. All the scouts are bringing dozens of such players to the GMs attention every year, it's up to the GM to select among the literally dozens if not hundreds of options presented to him.

Pioli is a darn good scout with lots of connections, glad to have him working under TD. Ozzie Newsome has a guy named Eric DeCosta working in similar capacity under him.

So do you think Pioli is making the same $70,000/yr as all the other Falcons scouts, Gazoo?

Who said anything about compensation? Do I think TDs right hand man Pioli is making as much as other scouts? Do I think Newsomes right hand man DeCosta makes as much as the other scouts? I don't know what any of their salaries are.

I am saying Pioli is more than a ******* scout! Your description makes it out like Pioli is shining TD's shoes. Pioli has a h3LLuva lot of say in who gets drafted. He scouts but he is not a scout.

are you kiddin me? i compared Pioli to Eric DeCosta, the assistant GM in Baltimore.

Pioli was hired by TD and is his right hand man. DeCosta was hired by Ozzie to be hi right hand man.

Gazoo, you are equating Newsome/DeCosta to Dimitroff/Pioli - it is not the same dynamic - Pioli has more hand than DeCosta - given more hand by the owner of the organization - Arthur Blank.

Also, in the above highlighted by you, your description is poor - I will give you the benefit of the doubt but when you say things like "all the scouts are bringing dozens of players to the GM" - that is not the way it is working in Atlanta. Pioli heads up the scouting - the scouts bring their research and reports to Pioli - not to Thomas Dimitroff - this is the way it was described by the organization - not me, not you. Ultimately TD gets final say, but he is likely not heavily involved until at the end at the final decision making time.

your problem with all these posts you are making is you are kind of lazy w/ your language and - so you are not conveying it like it really is.

And theres no way to say that Freeman would have played as well last year as he is this year. The recipe has changed.

Like you said, it worked out. I'm no longer concerned with what Smitty woulda coulda shoulda done.

I do find it funny how people try to pick and choose who to give credit to in the FO. Especially in the face of a report that shows the FO for what it truly is: a collaborative effort between a whole bunch of people, inside and out.

I am just pointing out the changes that have been made in the last two years and the way the titles, responsibilities and descriptions were laid out by the owner of the organization this offseason.
