The top takeaways and highest-graded players from the Falcons-Giants game.

Here are the top takeaways and highest-graded players from the Falcons-Giants game:

Atlanta Falcons

— It was a far more steady effort from Matt Ryan (+3.7) this week, trusting his once again excellent protection (his line combined to allow just six quarterback disruptions) and avoiding bad decisions. He was especially impressive on intermediate passes, going 8 of 9 though he attempted only one pass longer than 20 yards all game.

— This is what the Falcons hoped for when they drafted DL Vic Beasley (+5.3). He had a breakout game as he regularly turned the corner on Ereck Flowers. The quick-throwing Giants passing attack was the only thing preventing him from earning more than his one sack and two hurries.

— Is there a better receiver in football at the moment than Julio Jones? He was peppered with 14 targets, catching 13, as he turned in a 135-yard day and made two of the most impressive plays of the day that were instrumental in the Falcons win.

Top Performers:

ED Vic Beasley (+5.3)
QB Matt Ryan (+3.7)
WR Julio Jones (+3.3)
OLB Nathan Stupar (+3.2)
DE Tyson Jackson (+2.2)
New York Giants

— Before leaving the game with an injury, Ereck Flowers was not having the best of times. Flagged for two penalties and allowing three hurries, speed is definitely going to give him a problem on the evidence of this one. It’s something the Giants can live with when everything goes exactly to plan and the ball comes out quickly, but when it doesn’t trouble will be brewing.

— Another game where Eli Manning didn’t play poor, but had some bad moments that defined the outcome of the contest. Allowing himself to be strip-sacked by Kroy Biermann was inexcusable, with Eli displaying a tendency to drift in the pocket that hurt his protection. As a passer, he didn’t have a lot of joy on the deeper and intermediate routes but was extremely efficient on throws under 10 yards going 24 of 27.

— Not quite back to his best (he dropped a rifle of a pass late on) but much improved, Odell Beckham Jr. caught 7 of 12 targets for 146 yards, going to work on Robert Alford mostly. It just makes you wonder how the Giants failed to get him more involved in the second half.

Top Performers:

WR Odell Beckham Jr. (+2.8)
CB Prince Amukamara (+1.4)
HB Shane Vereen (+1.3)
DL Robert Ayers (+1.2)
CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (+1.1)

No, there is not.

As much as I loved the win...those grades make no sense. Julio is the better receiver but in this game Beckham was just as good. Why Tru wasn't on him in the first half I don't know.

Because you don't understand the Falcon's defensive scheme.

We primarily play a cover 3 zone, in which Alford and Tru each defend a deep third of the field. This has been covered ad nauseum. We do not use our corners to shadow specific receivers.

Not that you mentioned this, but while I am correcting people, Alford had a decent day. OBJ had a few amazing catches, and Eli put the ball exactly where it needed to be. The long touchdown was on Allen, not Alford.

Beckham was great in this game, and that diving catch over Alford pulling on him was the real deal, but based on what they look at, Julio had the better game. Julio caught 93% of the balls thrown to him. Beckham only caught 58%, including a drop on their final and most important drive.

Beckham also only had 7 yards in the second half. He dominated the first half, but we adjusted and made him a non-factor in the 2nd half. Julio was an unstoppable factor all game.

oh and julio was targeted 15 times what game are these folks watching

Maybe they didn't count the one where he went out of bounds and didnt attempt to catch the ball. Or maybe just a mistake. They always go back and watch the All22 when it's available and regrade everyone.

Thanks Falcon Ben. You take out that one 67 yard sizzle play by #13 and this is an entirely different conversation. On that play it looks as though Beckham worked his way into the middle of a triangle with Falcons players manning each point of the triangle. Credit to Manning for humming a dart at the right moment to catch all 3 defenders with about the same padding. It might have been Rico's responsibility but I can't say for sure. Since there were no other receivers in the area, I believe Alford should have more proactively driven toward Beckham. But it was clear as day that Rico blew it.

Outside of that however, Alford was usually bang bang, on top of his man to a large degree.

The deep gainer down the left sideline to Beckham was tight as **** and was the best pass manning threw the entire day. That was Adams all the way.

The touchdown grab by their big TE in the endzone couldn't have been covered any better. They were just flat out fortunate to get that TD. The only advice I would give Alford on that one is to not shaddow the guy on his hip pocket, but rather accelerate even with him where his body is between the receiver & the QB. Instead he sort of baited the throw and then launched his body horizontal with the ground going for the bat down. Talk about luck & skill coming together for the Giants, that was fortunate on their part.
