William Moore's next paycheck will have a deduction.

The Atlanta Falcons strong safety was fined $23,152 by the NFL for his hit on Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jordan Matthews during the Falcon's 26-24 Week 1 win, according to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport. Moore initiated contact with the crown of his helmet on the play.

Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Adam Jones was also fined $35,000 by the league for an unnecessary roughness penalty against the Oakland Raiders, as reported earlier this week.

I don't know why he leads with his head, it's putting him in as much danger as anyone. Launch the same way, but aim with your shoulder. That's easier said than done at NFL speeds, but that's part of the reason I don't like all the fines. You're running full speed at another guy running full speed who is being pulled down by a teammate, there are a lot of variables to factor in within a very short span of time in order to keep your helmet out of the equation entirely. I am glad Durant didn't get caught in the middle of that.

Moore has the life-long habit of lunging. I don't expect him to change. To be honest, I am tired of his tackling technique. He can make an occasional big hit, but he whiffs too often for my liking.

It's too bad. Moore is an experienced and savvy defender. He could be so much more effective, if he wrapped up tackles. Unfortunately, he looks to make the highlight hit.

The league looks like a joke, if you put these two incidents side by side there is no comparison. Jones ripped a guys helmet off and then proceeded to use it as a weapon, and there is no question about the deliberate intentions. Moore made a hit within the confines of the game, you can argue that it was illegal or deliberate but you'd have a really hard time proving so.

Moore was also far more likely to do serious harm to himself or Matthews. At the end of the day, player safety is the point of these fines. I have no problem with Moore's fine, and I've gotten so sick of seeing him launch himself at WRs that I'm ready to move on from him. That said, Adam Jones is a punk, and I would be perfectly ok with any fine the league thought he deserved on that play. I guess what I'm saying is both of these guys have earned these fines through their body of work, and I don't really care about comparing them to eachoher in a vacuum in honor of "fairness".
