Db#11 Week 1 Falcons Eagles Breakdown

Football is back and it couldn't have felt better! We started off the Quinn era with a W against a pretty solid team throughout the preseason and for majority of last season. But we're far from perfect. Here is a few things I seen an wanted to share with my fellow Falcon faithful.

The GOOD

Since it was a win you've gotta start off with the positives! The biggest positive that I saw last night was the effectiveness of the run game. I mean for an OLINE that was assembled on Friday and having 1 RB out the entire preseason you gotta admit.... We looked great! It was pleasing to see a Falcons offense with balance. Also on a secondary note Tevin Coleman is easily the clear cut #1 back, but it wouldn't hurt to being in a guy like Ben Tate to give us more depth cause if he or Freeman was to go down we'd be in trouble cause I don't trust Ward.

Another positive was the 1st half defense. I mean I was just wowed at how they played. Only letting up 3 points to that offense was incredible and not only that, but we got turnovers and solid pressure from the edge and the interior.

Probably the biggest positive was our STs. Bryant bailed 4 FGs,Bosher pinned them deep multie times and boomed loads of kickoffs to the back of the endzone, and even without Hester we still looked best in the league in that department!

My final positive is the pass blocking. Our guys up front looked dang near elite last night aside from that 1 strip sack because of Matthews, but luckily it was called back because of a PI. But all in all you couldn't help but smile to see Matt having nice time to drop back and dissect.

The BAD

The semi-Mike Smith heart throb in that awful 3rd qtr. Yes that's right Falcons fans who missed it we still struggled in the 3rd qtr. Idk what it is but that quarter of football is our unlucky quarter cause we never seem to be able to step on teams throats when needed. We've gotta fix that.

Now I complemented the defense for playing solid in the 1st half, but in the 2nd half they where getting worked underneath. Now this is mostly contributed to Bradford dinking and dunking for the majority of the time, but I noticed something that Kelly capitalized on.... We don't have a mix up front in our front 4 guys. I seen Quinn and Smith send out 2 completely different lineups every few plays and they both had major weaknesses. Like as an example he sent TJax,Soliai,Babs, and Biermann in one lineup all of which are better run stoppers than pass rushers and Kelly ate them alive, and then when Quinn countered and put in Jarrett,Beasley,Schofield,Clayborn, etc. Kelly ran it in those sweep outside runs. Quinn IMO needs to find a good balance in the 1st and 2nd front 4 defensive units in order for us to be really ready to compete. We can't keep sending out groups of guys who all offer 1 trait to contribute... You gotta find the balance.

My final bad is the SS play. Ishmael and Moore both played below average last night. Moore aside from 2 plays looked timid while Ish was smoked and immediately pulled cause he looked lost covering Sproles. We need to find someone who understands this system and get them here in this secondary before our defense can be crowned great.

The UGLY

Yes Falcons fans it doesn't stop at bad. We had some ugly too....

The 1st of 2 gripes is Biermann still trying to cover. Idk who sent him out there to cover the likes of Matthews and Sproles, but don't ever do it again. Leave Kroy doing 1 of 3 things.

1.Playing STs

2.Rushing the passer

3.Riding the bench

The other ugly was the play of Matt Ryan. I mean dang he looked like Andy Dalton out there at times. We need him to stop forcing things and just find that firery killer instinct. Once he gets that we'll be ready to contend, but he didn't have it once again last night.

To sounds off on a great opener of Falcons football I wanna give huge props to these players cause they killed it last night!

Ricardo Allen

Matt Bryant

Tevin Coleman

Julio Jones

Desmond Trufant

Robert Alford

Matt Bosher

Levine Toilolo

Patrick Dimarco

Grady Jarrett

Obrien Schofield

Justin Durant

Paul Worrilow

Roddy White

And the entire OLINE.

All in all I was impressed and I hope we stay winning! Go Falcons! Rise Up!~DB#11

tl;dr

You don't command the respect on this board to expect people to read all this stuff you post. Too many other garbage threads to make me believe this one is worth the while it would take to go through.

So you saw rushing the passer was a low point? Is that because we did not record a sack?, because Bradford was hit and pressured quite a bit.

No not as a low point. Cause we most definitely did pressure Bradford, but more a judgement of Quinn and his ability to adjust. I know he's green and all as a HC, but he's gotta figure out a lineup up front that works and has both run stuffers and pass rusher in both the 1st and 2nd units.

While I do agree with you to a certain degree that Quinn should possibly tinker with the rotations a bit, and more than likely he possibly will deprdning on game planing and match ups. I don't think it would have mattered as much due to the offense we were against. I don't care if you have a defense full of JJ Watts, eventually the defense will wear down. Regardless of how it looked last night, Chip Kelly's offense does present a bit of a unique challenge. We won't be seeing that offense again...until the playoffs

Chester was below avg at center last night too. He did great when paired up with a Gaurd but he got beat on several run plays which lead to TFL on Coleman/Freeman. I agree with most of this and I think Ryan was just having a hard time juggling last night. Hard to be 100% at your job when you are playing traffic director too. It's part of his job too sure but he was directing almost everyone on the line lol. Poor guy is lucky he didn't have a aneurysm from all that. New offense comes with woes. We will get that ironed out and we still have Julio so no matter what we can score on offense. Roddy also looked spectacular last night. Cheers to him.

IMO Biermann is actually better at covering slot recievers, slower backs and tight ends than he is at pass rushing. The guy sucks at it but you can't rely on him to ever get to a QB any game. I dont think we need a replacement SS. Moore is coming off injuries and only played half a season last night. Can't heckle him too much as he's knocking off some rust and still managed a pick and a couple nice hits. That dink and dunk crap is the successful due to the nature of the cover 3. That's the weakness of the defense and Kelly recognized it and attacked it hard in the second half. He is arguably the best coach in the league at half time adjustments, bellichick being the only other one comparable.

Here's some food for thought. In the Seahawks Super Bowl blowout of the Broncos two years ago, I'm pretty sure Peyton Manning wasn't sacked at all. Not once. Denver at that point employed the same tactic as the Eagles did in the second half--throw a bunch of quick underneath passes to neutralize the pass rush and rely on YAC. Peyton threw 2 INTs to 1TD in that game too.

no, quinn has to do all of that in ONE GAME, so that for the other 15 games, there won't be any need to worry and everything would be perfect

Look idk what you're problem is, but if you're only gonna come into my threads and be a smart@$$ then don't post in them.... If you think you won't agree with what I have to say about this team there is a button in the top left corner that allows you to back right outta my thread, and return to teaching all your wise words of wisdom in the rest of TATF to those who actually give 2 about what you gotta say. Got it? Good!

He made some bad throws but what he brings with his no huddle ability , ability to change plays at the line, read defenses . He's is undoubtedly our leader . He is an elite qb and will take us further now that he has a legitimate defense

I agree he is elite in a sense due to his pre-snap reads, but man oh man his execution was just off last night. If he get it corrected he should quite easily be considered a top 5 QB. No doubt about it.

I'm sure you're mainly referring to the interceptions so I'll interject an opinion on those. The one in the red zone wasn't a great throw, but it WAS an absolutely outstanding play by the LB. On the second one, I feel like there was a miscommunication on the route. Ryan threw to a spot where we didn't have a guy. He was either fooled on the coverage or he and the WR were not on the same page.

He has the right packages going. There was no problem with the rush. Had that been the Giants and most traditional offenses we'd have 4 or 5 sacks that game. It's hard to sack a qb that throws the ball as soon as it's hiked. Dink and dunk game. That's what Quinn's defense forces you to play. Again it was the Eagles uptempo offense so it slowed the rush. And he still got hit like 9 times. There was nothing wrong with the rush.
