g-dawg
This draft pick of Matt Ryan is why Dimitroff still has a job - everything else Falcons that is positive played out because of this correct pick - without Matt Ryan, it is doubtful we would ever have gotten Julio Jones three years later. Dimitroff would have taken Glenn Dorsey and Chad Henne (per Peter King who was in the warroom that day). By 2011, we would probably have been drafting another QB.The signing of Jake Long today jogged my memory on the 2008 NFL draft. If Jake would have fell to #3 overall, he would have been my pick. Dorsey was #2 on board followed by Matt Ryan but started liking Ryan the week of the draft - cannot say that I would have picked him though - probably would not have - however, as soon as the pick was made, I climbed on board from the beginning.Matt is not a perfect QB and still makes some bone-headed plays from time-to-time but given age and talent, there is not many QBs I would want in his place - probably Andrew Luck but no one else comes to mind.Everyone says I rag on TD "all the time" - which is not true - although I have been very critical of him especially from 2009-2013 - a 5yr stretch where he did not get us enough average-to-good players.I have always praised TD for his selection of Matt Ryan.SEL # TEAM PLAYER POSITION SCHOOL1 Miami Dolphins Jake Long T Michigan2 St. Louis Rams Chris Long DE Virginia3 Atlanta Falcons Matt Ryan QB Boston College4 Oakland Raiders Darren McFadden RB Arkansas5 Kansas City Chiefs Glenn Dorsey DT Louisiana State6 New York Jets Vernon Gholston LB Ohio State7 New Orleans Saints Sedrick Ellis DT USC8 Jacksonville Jaguars Derrick Harvey DE Florida9 Cincinnati Bengals Keith Rivers OLB USC10 New England Patriots Jerod Mayo ILB TennesseeThat is an awful top 10 and we got the crown jewel. Captain Insano
I DID NOT want Matt Ryan..after one of his BC games he made a joke about the Falcons maybe taking him..don't remember the game and can't find it but I clearly remember it and didn't like him for it..after he was drafted, I immediately changed my attitude and was glad we grabbed him bc, after all, we did suck...been his #1 fan since! BankerBird™
Mayo showed flashes, but never really lived up to the hype.
Falcon Freddie
I really didn't want Ryan. I believed Brian Brohm (Louisville) would be the best QB choice. Let us all be grateful I'm not the one who makes these decisions.
Tandy Gossett
Remember everyone wanted Dorsey and ESPN said we made the biggest mistake in taking Ryan and not Dorsey. Mike Mayock was the only one that was correct ... Mayock is the man and he knows about Prospects and Fits

Jesus
If I remember correctly, Matt Ryan was a done deal the moment he met with Smith, Mularkey and Dimitroff. He basically sketched out the playbook to them.

He basically sketched out the playbook to them.that is correct - but that required two more QB needy teams - Miami & St. Louis - to pass on Matty Ice - thanks to both Bill Parcells and Billy Devaney - assists go out to them! Macintez
Mayo showed flashes, but never really lived up to the hype.In my mind he has... He's a top 5 MLB. Athletic, physical and is intelligent. Doesn't splash a lot but is a very good all around linebacker.

jeffro2000
I remember watching Ryan play against GT his senior year, not knowing who he was, but he impressed me.I thought he could really play, so I looked up online and saw he was the top QB prospect or near the top.I wasn't crazy about the pick either. I had seen Flacco play and was impressed, and I was content with Brohm or Henne.Once drafted, I was 100% behind him though as I am all Falcons unlike some here who root for guys to fail just say they can say "I told you so".Thankful we took Ryan and won that coin toss. We were an absolute mess, there was no worse situation, but Ryan, TD, Smith stabilized us at least.
autigerfan
I'll admit it. I was a Dorsey guy. Would have taken Henne in round 2.
vel
I was sold on Matt when I watched the BC v VT game. Matt carried that team and made play after play. Loved him every since

Falcons805
And I might be the only one that wanted Darren McFadden ...lolMy friend who is a Steelers fan is the one that said you have your future QB...and just like everyone else after he was drafted and I saw his highlights etc I was all in and as of now I am very biased but I wouldn't pick any other QB on our team as long as he's healthy.
