B_Lo_Touchdowns
Despite undergoing surgery to repair a damaged groin, linebacker Brooks Reed will not be placed on injured reserve, short-term or otherwise, according to head coach Dan Quinn. Instead, **** remain on Atlanta's 53-man roster. This decision allows the Falcons to use their one short-term IR designation on someone else if need be."There was no other decision other than that," Quinn said. "So, he was always going to be on the 53."Reed, 28, registered 41 tackles, 10 QB hits, five tackles for loss, four pass deflections, three sacks and an interception last year with the Houston Texans. He and the Falcons agreed on a five-year contract in March."He was always gonna be on the 53"What happened too "No sacred cows" "Not playing favorites" "Every roster spot has to be earned""Open Competition" "Blah blah blah"How is it a guy who was injured last season, hasn't practiced or played in a preseason game this year "always gonna be in the 53"
JRid
Most likely Quinn has seen enough tape on him to know how good he is and exactly what he can do. Seems obvious Quinn is high on him and wants him to come back asap instead of definitely missing 8 games.

Guest Dirty Bird Nation ®
I think it's because each team is allowed only one IR-designated to return spot, and I believe we have used ours.

That makes sense but I'm not sure who we have on our short term IR list. Holmes is done for the season IIRC
JRid
He's still gonna miss 6-8 games anyway with his recovery time and getting back in shape Well, if he only misses 6 then that's two more games he gets to play in. Also, as DBN mentioned Quinn probably wants to save that designation in case he needs to use it later. Even if Reed misses 7 or 8 games Quinn will still have the "designated to return" in case he needs to use it.

Only the coaches know his expected timetable, and they ain't tellin.

caveman
They can't have 53 active for the games anyway. Why not have him available as soon as possible and save the short term IR just in case.
