Biggest Surprise Cuts/keeps For Final 53?

Maponga was #1. Mildly surprised by Starr. I think we will be making some additional moves to add to the offensive line. We only have 8 guys right now and might need some extra help there due to injury concerns.

Asa to IR perhaps sheds some light onto why he didn't work with the first team this summer. Sounds like he wasn't totally healthy as some have speculated.

Goodman for me. He had a couple TFL but Maponga had a couple sacks and Goodman always seemed to get nowhere as a pass rusher.

Godfrey made some plays but it was against guys that he should have stood out against.

Ward looked solid but seems to lack any real upside. He just seems like a guy.

Bartu seemed lost last year, and though he has been a solid tackler this year he still seems a step behind.

Antone Smith for sure. Maponga a close second.

I wasn't overly surprised by Antone getting released/injury settlement. He was injured and the staff felt it wasn't worth keeping a roster spot open for him. Hopefully they address the position from other teams cuts and upgrade on Ward as the #3.

Maponga was very meh to me. He was never going to be a high end pass rusher. I don't mind seeing him go. Out with the old, in with the new! *I'm also looking at you Biermann*

no one really knows what Maponga's upside is - we KNOW what Bierrman is - he has had his chances.

I've seen enough of Maponga to know he was never going to be a high end starter.

have you watched any pre-season games this year or is your analysis based off the Mike Smith regime and the past two years? Maponga has been dayum good AND consistent this pre-season.

I don't know about "high-end starter" and why that is your standard ? weird - seems a pretty ridiculously high bar you are basing your Maponga judgement on (when discussing cuts)- who said anything about Maponga being a starter? You do realize there are 28 non-starters on an NFL roster, correct?

Is Asamoah CUT or on season-ending IR? AF.com says he is on IR but then lists him w/ the cuts as well - not sure...

I was thinking when I read that it was more of a 'latest transaction' kind of thing instead of listing him as a cut, it would be considered a 'transaction' to put him on IR, right?

Maponga flashed against 3rd and 4th stringers, and several here went nuts over him. I personally just didn't get that excited about him, although I would have kept him over Kroy.....yeah yeah, I know LEO, SLB etc etc etc.......I still would have kept him instead. That should really serve more of an indictment on Kroy than a praise of Stansley...............

Surprised

Mopanga

not suprised

Starr

A. Smith

liked but numbers got them

Akuene

Mitchell

Mbu

White

A Smith --there are others on the roster that can do his jobs

Not a big fan of Wards but he seems to be a down by down pounder--Smith, Freeman, Coleman no

Wish they could have kept Mitchell But--understand

I agree. Maponga did a lot in the preseason, but it was always late in the game against backups. Goodman actually wreaked some havoc against starters on occasion (no sacks or big plays, but he was a force to be reckoned with on occasion).

Tone is my biggest surprise.

Those 28 non-starters should be contributors on Special Teams. Maponga doesn't, Biermann does. That's the only thing I can think of.

Early on in his career, Bierrman was an ace - hardly the case anymore. While not an ace, Maponga certainly can play special teams - given his passrushing talent on display this year, there certainly is room on this roster for Maponga - you already have the plenty of special teams aces.

Tone and Maponga but both I could make sense of. For Tone, he's an older back with injuries. I liked Tone a lot but it makes more sense to develop a younger back. I'm not sure Ward is that guy but we will see. Maponga is a victim of numbers but I thought he would be back with is on PS (along with Starr and Akunne).

I am most surprised that we really kept 7 receivers to hold onto Williams. I wanted that to happen, just didn't think it would since we really didn't "NEED" another WR/ST. Feel bad for Mitchell but we are just stupid deep at WR.
