Actually, they could have gone more over slot if they wanted. It doesn't have any bearing on rounds 1-10.

I'm not sure I understand your post. We have a cap, and it applies to every pick, not just the first 10 rounds. If we exceed $100k with picks outside the top ten, the additional over slot amount counts against our cap. The Braves "earned" the ability to overpay in round 11 by drafting college seniors with no leverage in rounds 6-10. Is that what you're saying?

"Jim Callis @jimcallisMLB 1h1 hour ago

Supp 1st-rder Joey Wentz expected to sign w/@Braves Wed for $3.05 mil (pick 40 = $1,616,800). KS HS LHP, chance for 3 plus pitches @MLBDraft"

Three of top four @Braves @MLBDraft arms have agreed to terms: Joey Wentz ($3.05 mil), Kyle Muller ($2.5 mil), Drew Harrington ($900k)."

Doing the math, we're $1,433,200 over on Wentz and $1,040,300 over on Muller, who had a slot of $1,459,700. That's $2,473,500 over for those two selections.

Harrington also signed for slightly over slot, which was $788,800. So, that puts us down another $111,200 for a grand total of $2,584,700.

The slot for #3 overall is $ 6,510,800, which means we need Anderson to come in around $3,926,100. We do have some give there, of course, but that's the number that brings us back to even.

Nope. You are right. Never knew the $100k rule, and since all picks after round 10 don't have true slot values, assumed something different.

As has been the case the past few years, the Braves are signing everybody they can within days of the draft. These players are already confirmed:

1C. Joey Wentz, LHP
2. Kyle Muller, LHP
3. Drew Harrington, LHP
5. Jeremy Walker, RHP
6. Matthew Gonzalez, 2B
7. J.B. Moss, LF
8. Taylor Hyssong, LHP
11. Matt Rowland, RHP
13. Brandon White, RHP
14. Ramon Osuna, 1B
15. Zach Becherer, RHP
17. Devan Watts, RHP
18. Zach Rice, LHP
19. Tucker Davidson, LHP
20. Gabe Howell, 2B
22. Alex Lee, 1B
23. Griffin Benson, 1B
27. Corbin Clouse, LHP

If I'm counting correctly, that's 15 out of our first 22 picks (top 20 rounds) already signed and 17 of the top 25. The seniors from the top ten will sign, as will Anderson, which means we'll get 18 out of our top 22 at a minimum.

The Braves also got some money back on Matt Gonzalez, their sixth round pick. His slot was $306,600, but he signed for only $25k. That's $281,600 we can theoretically subtract off the deficit above of $2,584,700 although we already know it went to our 11th round pick, who signed for $300k over slot.

One other thing I just noticed is that Zach Becherer, our 15th round pick, signed for $150k over slot at $250k. Our 22nd round pick, Alex Lee of Samford, evened that out a bit by signing for $50k, meaning we have a net overage of $100k on those two signed selections.

Braves manage to pull Bryse Wilson away from his commitment to UNC. The 4th round pick agreed to sign for $1.2M. His slot value was $546K. Wilson is a starter but his future projects as a hard throwing RP. It all depends on how his slider develops. He might be just a 2 pitch pitcher that can hit 96.

Ill be interested to see where Cumberland is assigned. We know his defense needs work but seems like most believe his bat is in pretty good shape.

My guess is the GCL. Morales played all season there working on defense, and he was a college guy recently converted to the position like Cumberland.

I wonder what the hold up is on getting Marcus Mooney signed since he's a college Senior? Taylor Hyssong is a Junior so he can stay at school if he wants to.

The Gamecocks played in the Super Regionals just last week. Mooney may simply be enjoying some time off.

This is a little more than what was expected, I believe. I doubt the Braves will have enough cap space to sign 16th round pick Josh Anthony, who has a strong commitment to Auburn. That's a shame, because he was probably the second most intriguing bat in our draft besides Cumberland.

Yeah, Anthony isnt signing at slot value. He responded "i thought the same" to a tweet about being worth more than his slot value.

Braves only have $225K left to spend before a penalty kicks in. That penalty is the loss of a future 1st round pick. They pretty much have to go slot value only for those left.

Probably the only way the Braves could get Cumberland to sign.
