Mckay Reinstated As Chairman Of Nfl Competition Committee

Recommended Posts

I've often wondered if the fact he was on the committee in the first place lessened our penalty? We tend to forget McKay has some swing in the NFL offices. He was on the short list to have Goodell's job.

I wouldn't doubt it. I also do kinda believe that the other Roddy White probably did somewhat act alone. Meaning that I don't see anyone higher up the totem pole actually telling him to do it. It was his job to get the place rocking and that is definitely one way to do it. lol

Which is WHY Blank kept him on board years ago. Same as Dimitroff. You wonder why every general manager he hires is made of teflon? The NFL is a small club.............The NFL business side is NOT 32 teams. Its ONE organization.

It is clear that league management takes a much harder line with players than it does with executives. You would think he would have to wait until the club serves its penalty (next year's draft) to be reinstated.

Per the NFL:

"Falcons ownership and senior executives, including team President Rich McKay, were unaware of Mr. White's use of an audio file with artificial crowd noise," the statement explained. "However, Mr. McKay, as the senior club executive overseeing game operations, bears some responsibility for ensuring that team employees comply with league rules."

That's why they came down on McKay, but not too much. They needed to prove a point, that it's up to the top dogs for each team to be aware of what's going on (same reason Sean Payton was suspended for Bountygate), but in this case they really had nothing on McKay so they couldn't justify a lengthy suspension.

Additionally, there's a big difference between pumping fake crowd noise into a stadium & drunk driving, sexual assault, dog fighting, etc. So, most of the things we hear players getting in trouble for is vastly different & much more harmful to the public or themselves than what these execs are doing. As for the way they deal with people who try to gain an unfair advantage in the game, the guy responsible for this situation is out of a job. When players get popped for performance enhancing drugs, they are suspended but still have their job... as long as they don't keep getting in trouble.

I'm old school. The second sentence is the key when you the boss. Responsibility...its a dying concept.

Well, they held him responsible & suspended him for 5 months. Might not seem like much to you, but when you are the chair of the competition committee, it's kind of a big deal when you are suspended during the preseason when rule changes are being put in place for the first time. Also kind if a big deal to be working on the new stadium & then in the critical point of selling PSLs to the fans in order to finance the place, the guy in charge is suspended for almost half a year.

I don't see why he should burn at the stake for something he didn't do, and was determined by the NFL to be unaware of the wrongdoing as it was happening. Yes, he needs to be aware of what's going on in the future if he's a CEO, but he took this punishment without complaint & will hopefully be better moving forward. Seems to me like the punishment fit the severity of the incident & his level of involvement.

My comments here are really just because I have nothing else to talk about until Saturday's game. I don't really care as much as me continue replies would indicate. It is just something to do.

From the team standpoint, I think the punishment was just about right. For McKay in particular, I think it was more of a political dog and pony show than an actual penalty. The penalty and the charge don't line up. They basically said he was unaware but responsible. The penalty they gave him was too much for "unaware" but not enough for "responsible." It is just another example of the commissioner feeling like something needs to be done, not being sure what to do, then going to his random penalty generator for the solution.

I never suggest burning him at the stake. A full season (off season cycle) off from the competition committee would have been appropriate in my book. We was suspended from April 1 to "no sooner than" June 30. He was aware of the penalty prior to April 1, giving him time to leave instructions and express his concerns to the powers that be. How much influence over this years rules cycle did he actually lose?
