"If Ryan is out we are done either way"..Why do people keep saying this? The job of the backuo qb is to win you a couple of games if your starter is out for a few weeks.(minor injury) Of course, MOST teams are "done" when their starter goes down for the freakin season. smh..

You answered your own question.

What an unbelievable waste of 1 million dollars. Should have just taken that money placed it in a cannon and fired it into the stands. At least you would build good will with the fans. You're certainly not going to be building good will if this bum ever has to play a meaningful down.

You said it! I said the same thing when we resigned Biermann as well.

Remind me. Where were Renfree's turnovers again?

So I just got back, and was able to go back and check and Renfree has no turnovers. He's thrown no interceptions in either game.

He is, however, credited with 2 fumbles, but that's BS. I went back and watched both. The first was on Person. He snapped the ball into his own groin. Renfree never had a shot at it. He should be credited with recovering it if anything. The second was on Jerome Smith. Renfree put it right in his numbers, but Smith bobbled it. Renfree was actually the first Falcon to try and take down the runner, but he was outnumbered.

So yeah, Renfree hasn't turned the ball over once this preseason. I hope that he keeps it up.smile.png

Shanahan for all his hype has yet to develop a QB beyond one year. RG3 lasted a season. Cousins was good in relief but never blossomed. Not sure what to make of the mess in Cleveland. Here he has Ryan in place. Why not make Renfree into something special? He has the tools to excel in the WCO.

Please show me where a head coach has consistently done that and I'll take you seriously until then you're a fool.

And I'm sorry did it hurt your feelings? ]: So much for being A MAN.

Rex Ryan tried to do that with Sanchez and Tebow. So... that's kind of to your point.

I have never heard QB hype with Shanahan. In fact this particular scheme often needs a Matt Ryan type player. His hype is for shortening drop backs and routes, roll outs, and using a lot of check down options who get YAC.

Good move

Yates and to a lesser extent Renfree were so bad that it was hampering the coaches ability to evaluate talent and run smooth practices. So this is not just about what if Ryan gets hurt but about the ability to have QB's other than Ryan in practice that are good enough to have solid practices and allow offensive talent to be properly evaluated.

When the QB's on your roster can't even get the job done in practice, time to dump and replace asap. I'm fine with bringing Grossman in. It's impossible for him to be worse than Yates.

I choose to look at it this way:

Yeah, Rex Grossman isn't the greatest thing since sliced bread, and the Falcons should have addressed this backup QB situation at least a couple of years ago. This new coaching regime had A LOT of other fires they had to put out or at least had to attempt to put out before they got to backup QB.

Quinn and Shanahan probably thought that the Falcons would be okay for 1 more year between Yates and Renfree. I think they both have been stunned by the lackluster play of both QBs and the abject refusal by either of them to step forward and take the job, both by their play and their lack of leadership.

And so, as a stopgap measure they bring in and sign Grossman, a vet who at least has a grasp on the fundamentals of Shanahan's offense.

There are levels of failure in this situation. As I said above some of the failure goes to the Falcons for letting this situation drag on for several years...but IMO the larger failure rests squarely on the shoulders of both Yates and Renfree for being so utterly forgettable and replaceable in their jobs.

Excellent post.

Both Yates and Renfree has had their chance to lock down the backup job, but not one of them has shown enough to do so. Yates has shown no improvement and even though we've heard nice things about him in training, it has been painful to watch the guy play in the two preseason games. Renfree - I don't know what he's missing but something just isn't there. He looks talented enough but somehow he lacks "presence" (don't know how to put it in writing unsure.png ) or leadership.

Maybe that's the reason I can't be to overly excited about our backup QB situation.

One good thing though .. No one on TATF is trying to replace Matt Ryan with a backup QB anymore (Guess we stunted D. Davis development enough) ph34r.png .

Lord these folks and their Davis cries. The dude flashed a little against some scrubs once and stunk up the field every time since. He was no better than what we have or worse.

And i agree, anyone who thinks having a two QB system and try to use a mobile QB wanna be to slow down the pass rush,is being foolish.

Yep, with Ryan only missing 2 games since 2008 the backup QB position could have easily been ignored. I'm glad our new coaches have decided to at least attempt to upgrade the situation. A Vet backup QB that knows the system will also greatly improve practices and help Ryan understand the system from the perspective of another QB. So this goes beyond better performances in pre season. Also having a better backup QB allows the coaches to better evaluate offensive and defensive talent. Yates and Renfree being so bad probably gav ea false impression to how the defense looked in practice and also limited the looks you could give other offensive talent.

I know this will rub people the wrong way but I think the mobile QB experiment is over in the NFL. Sure it's good to have a QB that can be mobile at times but the Idea of a Vick like QB is done. As we have seen QB's that rely on their speed more than their brains get injured way to much and do not have viable long careers.

There is nothing out there that shows Renfree hasn't put the work in. He just isn't and probably never going to be more than what he is. I don't think there has ever been a priority to develop a decent backup since Ryan came on board. Not a lot of teams do that anymore. Look at the back ups behind Brady and Manning or Brees. Your best bet is a journeyman
