wallace francis
Only one person is excited about us signing the Sex Cannon! This is message board gold potential. This was one of the funniest deadspin articles I remember. Check out the article and comments if you're not familiar. As background, Rex Grossman went through a long period when he was basically the opposite of our Joey Harrington Captain Checkdown period, and would just chuck it deep.http://deadspin.com/236116/ladies-meet-the-sex-cannon

Lornoth
I don't really see the point but oh well. At least we're doing something I guess.
FalconFanSince1969
OMG, there was no one on the scrap heap better than a guy who hasnt played in 3 years and wasnt even decent then? Rex knows the system, period.I know that doesn't mean much to message board posters because they have no idea what's going on, but it means a lot to the professionals. I doubt Grossman will win a game for us that Renfree couldn't.

FentayeJones
Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan is bringing an old friend with him to Atlanta. The Falcons announced Wednesday that they have signed Rex Grossman. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported it is a one-year deal, per a source informed of the contract. The 35-year-old has now worked with Shanahan over three stops in Washington, Cleveland and Atlanta. For the Falcons, the decision to bring in an experienced veteran was an easy one. Backups T.J. Yates and Sean Renfree haven't had the best of preseasons.Securing Grossman would lock in a stopgap solution should anything happen to Matt Ryan and at least give the Falcons a chance to compete in his absence without limiting the playbook significantly.Bonding with Shanahan has given Grossman a nice late-career renaissance. As practice times continue to dwindle, coaches aren't taking chances anymore with players who might not know their system. - NFL.com Edited August 26, 2015 by FentayeJones

Shannahan knows Rex Grossman - and by now, he knows Renfree and Yates. In the past, Dimitroff/Smitty would just roll with whatever trash they had on roster - John Parker Wilson and DJ Shockley for cryin' ou t loud drew paychecks from Arthur Blank for a few years.Grossman is not a worldbeater but he is definitely better than Yates - I still hope Renfree beats them both out but he is definitely better than TJ Yates. Leggggggo
Sexy Rexy... It's a personal thing from seeing him on the skins, not a fan!On a football note, I'm not sure he'll be better than either of the two we have BUT I'm happy we are making competition... g-dawg
$375K dead money when we cut YatesWho freakin' cares about that? immaterial. Less than 3/10's of 1% of the overall cap.
Tylanta99
I like the signing. Dam if we do, dam if we dont. From what i have read Rex knows the offensive playbook. Thats good. Anybody else would only have 2 weeks to learn and get caught up on the new offense. While Yates and Renfree have had a month to get it. I certainly trust Kyle to know his QB's moreso than myself. Just not a signing i'm jumping around for or anything lol.

ATLFalcons11
They see a problem, then they fix it.Gives me more confidence about the OL.Not saying Rex Gross man is a boss but they are trying to fix it with what's available and that's all I can ask for. Just not a signing i'm jumping around for or anything lol.Why would ANY fan "jump around" for a backup QB signing? - if you do, that means you HATE your starting QB, and I love me some Matty Ice. NewFalcon
I'm gonna cut the coaching staff some slack here, even though I think Grossman is no better than mediocre on his best day. Speaks more to the lack of quality in available NFL backups than anything else. Yates and Renfree had their chances and they stunk up the place. Waiting for GAFan to start a thread to bring back DJ Shockley: 'Da Future'... :-)
Tuggle'2
Yates and Renfree were playing at basically this level last preseason and the Ole Cap Tipper just rolled with them. Whether Grossman is an upgrade or not, Quinn isn't being complacent. No sacred cows. Yeah this can't be said enough.
atlking
I hate how qbs like Grossman keep getting recycled. I know WHY Shanahan got him, he knows the offense, but there are other quarterbacks out there who are better, but they will never get the NFL to call them or they are stuck on other teams and the Falcons probably couldnt swing a deal. I dont get the philosophy of the backup having to be a scrub. I want a backup THAT CAN PLAY. He might not be better than the starter, but he CAN PLAY..........We know his issues, but he is still better than grossman because he can still get out of the pocket. Heck, in games where the Falcons offensive line may not be protecting Ryan, a quarterback like Young can come in for a few plays ( read option) to calm down the pass rush.......Ive always liked Orton. He retired, but might come out for the right deal........Davis was another talent that got lost under the Smith/Dimitroff regime.........Colt McCoy is lost in the politics up in Washington.. Josh Freeman CANT be as bad as he looked the last couple of years.........lmao Edited August 26, 2015 by atlking
MAD597
Why do people think all Backup QB's do is hold clip boards and play if they starter goes down? They also throw in practice. Having a better QB for practice can benefit the offense and defense.
