The Atlanta Falcons' new home, Mercedes Benz Stadium, is scheduled to open in 2017. No matter what you think of the $1.4 billion project, there's no denying its appeal. To be honest, they had me at "100 yard bar." But can it be more than just the Falcons' home field? That remains to be seen.

Best case scenario, the Falcons are chosen to host the Super Bowl and then win the Super Bowl at home ... in the same year. Given the statistical improbability of that happening, I'll settle for a Super Bowl birth. And if that's not happening, it'd just be nice to see the Super Bowl played in Atlanta.

Per ESPN's Vaughn McClure, the effort to woo the NFL's event planners is already underway.

"The committee from the NFL has been to Atlanta several times,'' Falcons owner Arthur Blank said Monday. "They met with a large number of people, toured the facilities, understand our plan obviously. And they've studied the stadium. There are a number of cities competing for the Super Bowl in those years, and the vote will be next May.''

Even if its positive effect on Atlanta's economy is dubious at best, hosting the preeminent event for the country's most popular sport is a huge ego boost. It's what dreams are made of; that and candy-coated rainbows.

Your thoughts?

If they REALLY want to host the Super Bowl they need to bribe the owners with stuff like free access to Augusta, being able to swim in the Aquarium, and free refill deliveries from the world of Coke.

Not far from the truth:

The NFL's extravagant demands for Super Bowl host cities (SB Nation)

What the NFL wants

  • Free police escorts for team owners
  • Use of Presidential suites at the city's top hotels at no-cost
  • 35,000 free parking spaces
  • All revenue from ticket sales to the game
  • Free curbside parking at the NFL House, a "high-end, exclusive drop-in hospitality facility for our most valued and influential guests to meet, unwind, network and conduct business."
  • Local police dedicated to anti-counterfeit enforcement, provided at no cost
  • Installation of ATM machines at the stadium that accept NFL preferred credit and debit cards, along with the removal of ATMs that "conflict with preferred payment services."
  • Two top quality bowling venues for an NFL celebrity bowling event
  • Portable cell phone towers
  • Free promotional space from local newspapers and radio stations for the "NFL Experience" in the month before the game
  • Creation of "clean zones" around the stadium and the hotel for NFL execs that prevent "certain activities" as well as suspend new and existing permits for those activities
  • Free access to three top golf courses in the months before the game
  • Exemption from state, county and municipal taxes

Well one thing is for sure Blank did the stadium correctly. A good modern deisgn with public acceptance for the most part with alot of money coming in from existing taxes instead of new ones and him puttup the bulk of the cash. That braves stadium was a fly by night under the radar scam it looks like in comparison. Hope it pays off and we get a SB.

Yeah, I remember several years ago when we were in the bidding with other cities and Blank was promising 'major' renovations to the Ga Dome if we hosted they ultimately gave it to Tampa.

It came out Tampa won it because of all the extra 'amenities' they promised to the owners like free access to every aspect of several of the resort and golf courses and who knows what else wasn't disclosed.

why do the wealthiest people always want expect free sh1t?

Because supposedly everything they touch turns to gold, which I guess isn't too far off from the truth. Still though, some things are just excessive, like not paying for law enforcement.
